Kino Lorber releases Robert Greenwald’s Xanadu with a 4K restoration and multiple new commentaries.
Xanadu (1980), directed by Robert Greenwald, arrives on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray from Kino Lorber on August 19. The film features Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck, James Sloyan, and Dimitra Arliss in this musical fantasy about a muse inspiring a struggling artist to open a roller-disco.
The 4K Blu-ray includes a new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, presented in Dolby Vision HDR. Audio options comprise original 4.0 stereo, 5.1 surround, and lossless 2.0 mixes. Optional English subtitles are provided.
Multiple new audio commentaries enrich the release: director Robert Greenwald with filmmaker Douglas Hosdale; filmmaker Jennifer Clymer and film historian Nathaniel Thompson; historians David Del Valle and Krystov Charles; plus historian Samm Deighan.
The companion Blu-ray disc also features the same 4K restoration and audio commentaries. It adds supplemental material including "Making Xanadu," a 20-minute documentary newly mastered in 2K, "Going Back to Xanadu," a 27-minute cast and crew retrospective from 2009, five TV spots, 17 radio spots, and the theatrical trailer mastered in 2K.
This release highlights Gene Kelly in his final film role alongside the soundtrack of ten original songs, five by Electric Light Orchestra’s Jeff Lynne and five by John Farrar, with memorable tracks such as "Magic," "I’m Alive," and the title song "Xanadu."
