Proof of the Man Limited Edition Blu-ray Releases September 9
Arrow Video brings the 1977 Japanese crime thriller to Blu-ray with new commentary and restoration
Proof of the Man arrives on High-Definition Blu-ray as a Limited Edition from Arrow Video on September 9 in the U.S. and Canada, and September 8 in the UK. This release marks the film's first home video availability outside Japan, featuring a brand new transfer sourced from a 4K restoration by Kadokawa.
The 1977 crime drama, directed by Junya Sato and adapted from Seiichi Morimura's novel, explores complex themes of racial identity and postwar trauma through a gripping whodunnit set in Tokyo and New York. The story follows Johnny Hayward (Joe Yamanaka), a mixed-race man stabbed at a Tokyo hotel, and Detective Munesue (Yusaku Matsuda), who investigates links between Johnny’s attack and a politician’s son fleeing a hit-and-run.
This Limited Edition Blu-ray features original lossless mono audio and optional newly translated English subtitles. Supplementing the film are brand new materials including an audio commentary with Asian American film scholar Rob Buscher and DJ Skeme Richards, plus a video introduction by scholar Earl Jackson. Also included is a filmed discussion titled A Japanese Blockbuster with critics and Sato biographers Tatsuya Masuto and Masaaki Nomura.
Additional features include original theatrical trailers, an image gallery, and a reversible sleeve showcasing original and newly commissioned artwork by Tony Stella. The package is completed with an illustrated collector’s booklet containing essays by film critic Michelle Kisner and scholar Alexander Zahlten.
Arrow Video continues its support for classic cinema with this edition that offers rich context and comprehensive presentation for collectors and cinephiles.
