Flow 4K Blu-ray Arrives September 23 on Criterion Collection
The Criterion Collection releases Gints Zilbalodis’s Oscar-winning indie animation Flow on 4K Blu-ray with director-approved transfer and bonus materials
Flow is a 2024 international animated feature directed by Gints Zilbalodis, presenting a story of friendship and survival in a flooded world. After a great flood devastates its home, a courageous cat joins a capybara, lemur, bird, and dog to navigate a boat seeking dry land. The film explores environmental fragility and community with innovative animation produced by a small team using open-source software.
The release from The Criterion Collection includes a new 4K digital transfer approved by Zilbalodis, paired with a 7.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The 4K Blu-ray set features one UHD disc with Flow and Zilbalodis’s debut feature Away (2019) and two Blu-rays containing the film and special features.
Special features include a new audio commentary by Zilbalodis, a full-length animatic of the film, interviews with Zilbalodis and co-writer-coproducer Matīss Kaža, and the making-of documentary Dream Cat (2025) produced for Latvian Television. Also included are two short films, Aqua (2012) and Priorities (2014), each with new commentary from the director, as well as an unused-shots reel with commentary. Additional materials comprise trailers, TV spots, proof-of-concept teasers, English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, and English descriptive audio.
The package also contains an essay by critic Nicolas Rapold and collectible stickers.
