The Old Dark House 4K Blu-ray Arrives July 28 from Eureka Entertainment
Eureka Entertainment releases James Whale’s 1932 horror classic on 4K Blu-ray with new restoration and extensive special features.
The Old Dark House (1932), directed by James Whale, one of the last and notable entries in the original cycle of ‘old dark house’ films, releases on 4K Blu-ray from Eureka Entertainment’s Masters of Cinema series on July 28, 2025. The film stars Boris Karloff as the mute butler Morgan, alongside Melvyn Douglas, Gloria Stuart, and Charles Laughton, and is presented in a new 4K digital restoration with Dolby Vision HDR grading.
Set during a storm in remote Wales, a group of travellers seek shelter inside a sinister mansion inhabited by the strange Femm family. What begins as a refuge soon turns ominous as the family’s dark secrets come to light, including a dangerous presence on the loose. This atmospheric horror combines suspense, gallows humor, and memorable performances.
The 4K Blu-ray is region free and offers uncompressed LPCM audio along with optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Audio commentary features contributions from critic Kim Newman and Stephen Jones, actress Gloria Stuart, and James Whale biographer James Curtis. Additional special features include the video essay “Meet the Femms” by David Cairns, an interview with Sara Karloff titled “Daughter of Frankenstein,” archival interviews related to the film’s rediscovery, stills gallery, and both the original theatrical and 2018 re-release trailers.
This limited edition release includes an O-card slipcase with artwork by Sara Deck, restricted to 2000 copies, alongside a collector’s booklet containing new essays from Craig Ian Mann and Philip Kemp as well as archival materials related to the film.
