The Betrayal Limited Edition Blu-ray Releases September 16
Radiance Films presents Tokuzo Tanaka's classic samurai drama with new restoration and extensive extras
The Betrayal (1966) arrives on a limited edition Blu-ray from Radiance Films on September 16 in the U.S. and Canada, with a UK street date of September 15. Directed by Tokuzo Tanaka, a former assistant to Akira Kurosawa, this jidaigeki samurai film stars Raizo Ichikawa and explores themes of honor, betrayal, and vengeance within the samurai code.
The film is presented in high definition from a digital transfer by Kadokawa, featuring uncompressed mono PCM audio. This edition includes a new English subtitle translation, enhancing accessibility for English-speaking audiences. It comes housed in full-height Scanavo packaging with a removable OBI strip that leaves the packaging free of certificates and markings.
Special features deepen viewers' appreciation with a select-scene audio commentary by Japanese film historian Tom Mes, as well as two visual essays: one by Philip Kemp comparing The Betrayal to Tanaka’s earlier work Orochi the Serpent, and another by Tom Mes focusing on Tokuzo Tanaka himself. The reversible sleeve showcases both the original and newly commissioned artwork by Time Tomorrow, adding collector appeal.
This release is a limited edition of 3,000 copies and includes a booklet featuring new writing from Alain Silver. The disc's region coding is locked to Regions A and B, targeting primarily North American and European markets.
