Warner's revelation of "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" on a 1080p/AVC-encoded video format provides audiences with an almost flawless visual feast, notwithstanding a few negligible artifacting instances. This arises sparingly, such as during the introductory sequences, Sean's helicopter's approach towards the water tornado, and when peering through the night sky via Alexander's tree-house. These moments are brief and do not detract significantly from the overall experience. The color palette is exceptional, showcasing vibrant and rich tones, including lush green landscapes, deep ocean blues, and radiant reds, which are complemented by dark, earthy blacks. Detailing is remarkable across the board - from natural textures to man-made structures - ensuring every element is distinctly visible and sharply rendered.
The film's encoding shines irrespective of its original 3D intentions, presenting a stunning visual quality in 2D that retains its charm and immersive qualities. With an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, every frame from this freshly minted transfer is clean and crisp, enhancing the viewing experience even amidst its more digitally inclined sequences which convey a television-like quality. The intricacy observed in the island's flora, fauna, and antiquated ruins adds a layer of realism and depth. The array of vivid colors brings the screen to life with dynamic contrast and luxurious blacks that provide a sense of depth, making the visual narrative as engrossing as its storyline.
Effectively, Warner Brothers have transcended typical expectations with a video presentation that not only respects but elevates the cinematic aesthetics of "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." Despite minor setbacks with artifacting, the video quality, through its sharp details, dynamic range of colors, and overall clarity, offers an engaging visual journey. The video section par excellence assures that both videophiles and casual viewers alike are granted a visual treat that is seldom seen in home media formats, promising an exemplary high-definition experience throughout.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track of "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" delivers a vibrant auditory adventure that, while not entirely matching the visual spectacle of the film, provides a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It bursts to life with a variety of over-the-top directional effects that, although might seem a tad excessive, add to the film's adventurous spirit intentionally. The soundstage showcases an impressive dynamic range, from the thunderous eruptions of a volcano to the delicate rustle of jungle foliage, encapsulating viewers in a rich tapestry of sounds. The LFE channel impresses with its robust output, rendering everything from the subtle pad of a pint-sized elephant to the menacing roar of the island's gigantic creatures with commendable clarity and power.
Despite its strengths, the audio presentation has areas where it falls short of expectations. Early scenes lack the immersive quality that later segments boast, and action sequences, while vivid with well-executed pans and directional sound, favor volume over subtlety. The rear channels, crucial for enveloping the audience into the island's mysterious environment, sometimes deliver less than convincingly, leaving a bit more to be desired in terms of surround activity that fully engages and transports the viewer. Vocals remain consistently clear, and channel separation is excellent throughout, showcasing detailed mid-ranges and adequately handled low bass, which, despite its adequacy, lacks the exercise-inducing depth that might have been anticipated.
Overall, while the audio may not astound to the same degree as the visual elements do, it nevertheless provides a satisfying auditory companion to the on-screen action. With playful rear speaker activity that brings the island to life and a strong low-end response that adds gravity to the more thrilling moments, "Journey 2" excels in delivering an audio experience that’s both engaging and entertaining for a family comedy adventure. The mix is ample and succeeds in crafting an animated soundfield that, despite its limitations, adequately complements the film’s light-hearted yet adventurous tone.
Extras: 36
The extra presentation of the Blu Ray for "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" offers a small yet interesting array of bonus content, striking a balance between interactive experiences and standard behind-the-scenes looks. The standout feature is an interactive map titled "Are You Strong Enough to Survive Mysterious Island?" which provides an engaging way for viewers, especially younger audiences, to explore the movie's setting, its fantastical creatures, and various production insights, ranging from practical to visual effects. This is complemented by a standard yet unremarkable collection of deleted scenes that, despite their HD clarity, fail to contribute significantly to the film’s narrative or entertainment value. Similarly, the gag reel offers brief amusement through lighthearted bloopers. All extras are available in high definition, with additional support for an UltraViolet Digital Copy, ensuring that fans have access to the film and its supplementary content across devices.
Extras included in this disc:
- Are You Strong Enough to Survive Mysterious Island?: An interactive map exploring the film's creatures, locations, and behind-the-scenes secrets.
- Deleted Scenes: Five additional scenes providing little of significance.
- Gag Reel: A compilation of outtakes and on-set antics.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," a sequel to the family adventure film "Journey to the Center of the Earth," continues the tale of young Sean Anderson, who, alongside his stepfather Hank (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), embarks on a thrilling quest inspired by the classic novel. This time, they're decoding signals that lead to an island as fantastical as it is dangerous. Upon their arrival, they're joined by a quirky helicopter pilot, Gabato (Luis Guzmán), his daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens), and Sean's adventurous grandfather, Alexander (Michael Caine). Together, they navigate an island where gigantic creatures and miniature elephants roam free, capturing the essence of Jules Verne's imagination brought to life.
Director Brad Peyton delivers a visually engaging and energetic sequel, appealing directly to its target audience: children and their families. While it certainly caters more to a younger demographic with its over-the-top antics and simplified peril, it's the family dynamics and slapstick humor that offer a universal appeal. Dwayne Johnson adds a charismatic touch to the ensemble, balancing between being an action hero and a comedic figure without overshadowing the youthful spirit of Josh Hutcherson's character. However, Vanessa Hudgens' performance is noted as somewhat lackluster, failing to fully mesh with her CGI surroundings and co-stars.
From a technical standpoint, "Journey 2" triumphantly overcomes some of the challenges faced by its predecessor, presenting computer-generated creatures with a surprising level of realism within its vibrant, albeit overly digital, world. The adventure sequences, while not breaking new ground in cinema, provide enough excitement and spectacle to keep its audience engaged. Its success at the box office suggests that there's still an appetite for light-hearted, adventurous fare, even if it doesn't push the envelope in terms of storytelling or cinematic achievements. Nonetheless, "Journey 2" proves to be a competent follow-up that prioritizes fun and family-friendly adventure over depth and complexity.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" on Blu-ray delivers a vivid and immersive viewing experience, catering primarily to a younger audience with its blend of whimsy and family-friendly adventure. Despite the film lacking the humor and excitement found in its predecessor and featuring a narrative that feels less engaging, the technical presentation stands out remarkably. The Blu-ray offers an AVC-encoded video of exceptional quality, ensuring that every frame of this fantastical journey is depicted with clarity and vibrance. Accompanying the stellar video is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track that envelops viewers in the movie's dynamic soundscape. Unfortunately, while the audio-visual presentation impresses, the collection of supplementary materials leaves something to be desired. A modest selection of extras, including a small interactive feature exclusive to the Blu-ray, provides some additional entertainment but ultimately falls short of offering a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the film's creation.
From a technical standpoint, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" excels, boasting reference-quality video that showcases the lush environments and fantastical creatures inhabiting the titular island with unparalleled detail and vibrancy. The 3D edition slightly edges out its 2D counterpart by enhancing the visual spectacle, drawing viewers deeper into the cinematic world. However, the film's content itself may not hold up as strongly, given its lackluster humor and adventure elements when compared to the original installment. This disparity places greater emphasis on the technical merits of the Blu-ray presentation as the main draw for potential buyers.
In conclusion, while "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" may not recapture the full charm and excitement of its franchise's origins, its Blu-ray release offers a compelling reason to delve into this visually stunning sequel. The outstanding visual and audio quality make it an attractive addition to family movie nights, particularly for those with young children. Though the extras are few and could benefit from expansion, the primary appeal lies in the opportunity to experience this visually rich movie in high-definition splendor. Parents seeking a lighthearted adventure film that kids will want to revisit will find value in this release, even if it doesn't quite fill the shoes of its predecessor.
