Battleship Potemkin (1925), directed by Sergei Eisenstein - starring Aleksandr Antonov, receives a special 100th anniversary Blu-ray release from the British Film Institute. This edition features a new restoration by Deutsche Kinemathek and includes the acclaimed score by the Pet Shop Boys, Tennant and Lowe.
The release is scheduled for September 5, 2025, coinciding with a special centenary week-long screening event at the BFI. The package contains a two-disc set: one Blu-ray of the restored film and one CD featuring the Pet Shop Boys soundtrack. Parlophone will also release the soundtrack separately on remastered CD and double LP vinyl.

The film, a landmark in silent cinema, chronicles the 1905 naval mutiny with Eisenstein’s innovative editing and composition, most famously in the Odessa Steps sequence. Plus, the included The Pet Shop Boys’ score, blending electronic and orchestral elements, was first performed live in London’s Trafalgar Square in 2004 with the Dresdner Sinfoniker orchestra.
Special features include 'Hochhaussinfonie' (2017), a 68-minute multimedia musical production by Dresdner Sinfoniker and Pet Shop Boys; a 4-minute behind-the-scenes feature titled 'Trafalgar Square Highlights' from the 2004 live performance; and the film’s 2025 trailer. An illustrated booklet accompanies the set with essays by Chris Heath and Sarah Cleary plus archive materials by Neil Tennant and Michael Brooke.
Battleship Potemkin with music by Pet Shop Boys will open in selected cinemas around the UK and Ireland just before a special double screening event on September 5 at BFI Southbank paired with Pet Shop Boys’ film It Couldn’t Happen Here with Battleship Potemkin, including a Q&A with Neil Tennant.
