The Ogre of Athens follows Thomas (Dinos Iliopoulos), a shy bank clerk mistaken for 'The Ogre', a feared criminal mastermind in Athens. On New Year's Eve, Thomas gains unexpected respect and attention, but as he basks in his new-found notoriety things start to get dangerous. Directed by Nikos Koundouros (Young Aphrodites), this satirical crime drama combines physical comedy with sharp social commentary and is now recognized as a modern Greek cinema classic despite its initial commercial failure.
The limited edition Blu-ray from Radiance Films includes a high-definition digital transfer and uncompressed mono PCM audio along with newly improved English subtitles. The release also features a new introduction by novelist Jonathan Franzen (2025) and fresh interviews with critic Christina Newland and Greek film expert Dimitris Papanikolaou.
