The Island (1985), directed by British-Chinese filmmaker Po-Chih Leong, brings survival horror from the rural American landscape to a remote East Asian island. As teacher Mr Cheung (John Sham) leads students on what should be a simple excursion, they discover the island is inhabited by three disturbed brothers and their equally unhinged mother. The film explores class conflict with educated urbanites with violent rural inhabitants, maintaining distinct Hong Kong horror elements.
This release by the Masters of Cinema series presents The Island on Blu-ray for the first time outside Asia, sourced from a brand new 2K restoration. It retains the original Cantonese mono audio with optional English subtitles newly translated for this edition.
