The 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation of "Trolls" represents a significant upgrade over its 1080p counterpart, offering a more detailed and vibrant viewing experience. Rendered from a 2K DI and upscale to 4K, the transfer benefits immensely from the HDR color grading, which enriches the film's already lively color palette. While the increase in resolution sharpens the finer details in character textures and environmental intricacies, it's the HDR's nuanced handling of colors that stands out. The subtle yet appreciable difference in texture detail is particularly noticeable on the characters' skin and clothing, as well as the hand-crafted sets and backgrounds, which now display a greater depth of field and clarity. This refined detail enhances the visual storytelling, making the whimsical world of "Trolls" even more immersive.
Colors on the 4K UHD Blu-ray are darker and more nuanced compared to the Blu-ray's brighter, more vivid presentation, without sacrificing the film's dynamic range and visual punch. This offers viewers a choice between a slightly boosted detail and a refined color palette or a more cheerful but less nuanced color vibrancy. The HDR rendering not only enhances the film's broad chromatic spectrum but also adjusts contrast levels to ensure whites are radiant and darks are deep, enriching the visual depth and resulting in a presentation that is consistently engaging.
The technical prowess of the 4K UHD format shines through in every frame of "Trolls," thanks to its HEVC H.265 encoding that ensures a clean and sharp image. The HDR10 complement steadfastly captures and presents an array of glittering, mood-setting colors that maintain vivacity even in dimmer scenes. The aspect ratio of 2.35:1 enables viewers to enjoy an expansive view of this enchanting world, where every subtle nuance, from individual hairs to fabric textures, is exquisitely defined. This pristine clarity, combined with judiciously handled black levels and depth of field, exemplifies the remarkable capabilities of 4K UHD in bringing animated worlds to life with stunning realism and visual appeal, making "Trolls" a visually sumptuous experience that showcases what the format can achieve in terms of contrast, color reproduction, and overall image fidelity.
Audio: 79
The Dolby Atmos mix of "Trolls" on 4K UHD Blu-Ray, as opposed to its DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 counterpart on standard Blu-ray, offers a nuanced but not aggressively different audio experience. While it maintains a moderately active use of its Atmos capabilities, with effects and music utilizing the overhead channels to create an immersive environment, the overall execution is both praised and critiqued for its subtlety. Key moments within the film, marked by significant low-end pushes, showcase comparable depth and presence between the two formats, with some suggesting the DTS track edges out slightly in terms of diffusive depth and presence across the sound stage. The Atmos track, however, shines in its fidelity and balance, particularly during musical numbers which are vividly brought to life with outstanding clarity extending into front-heights, creating an engaging half-dome of sound.
The analysis indicates that while the standard Blu-ray’s DTS-HD MA soundtrack holds its own, particularly in terms of low-frequency depth and aggressive staging, the 4K UHD’s Dolby Atmos track offers a more premium sound experience, especially noticeable during visually rambunctious sequences. Ambient effects and action sequences see a significant benefit from the Atmos mix, with more precise and discrete panning across channels creating a lively and immersive soundscape that extends well into the overhead channels. However, it's mentioned that these enhancements, while appreciable, may not be perceived as substantial upgrades by all audiences, underlining a divide in expectations for what Atmos should deliver versus its implementation in "Trolls".
Critically, while there is an acknowledgment of missed opportunities to fully explore the potential of Atmos technology in creating an all-encompassing auditory experience, the 4K UHD presentation receives commendation for its dynamic range, dialog clarity, and the engaging utilization of its surround sound field. The presence of robust low frequencies that lend palpable depth to musical sequences, complemented by a precise dialogue reproduction and varied soundstage dynamics, suggests that the audio presentation, albeit with areas for improvement, significantly enhances the visual joy of "Trolls," making it a pleasantly immersive experience for its audience.

Trolls," the animation sensation, brings a whirlwind of color, music, and adventure to the 4K UHD Blu-ray platform, delivering an experience that is hard to ignore. At its core, this DreamWorks creation paints a vibrant tapestry of Troll Village, juxtaposed against the gloomy realm of the Bergens. This stark contrast serves as the perfect backdrop for our heroes, Poppy and Branch, voiced by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, respectively, who embark on a daring mission full of twists and turns. Their journey, riddled with mishaps and odd-couple banter, not only entertains but subtly explores themes of happiness, identity, and friendship.
Musically, "Trolls" is a feast for the ears, layering classic hits and Timberlake-produced tracks that promise a foot-tapping good time. However, beneath the catchy tunes and dazzling colors lies a narrative that struggles to innovate, echoing sentiments of films past with its underdog story and moral lessons. Despite this familiarity, there’s an undeniable charm to the film that resonates with audiences young and old—owing much to its talented cast. Kendrick's effervescence blended with Timberlake's gruff pragmatism offers a dynamic that is both amusing and heartfelt.
Technically speaking, the 4K UHD presentation of "Trolls" is nothing short of spectacular. With visually arresting textures and a kaleidoscope of colors that pop off the screen, it's a showcase of animation prowess. Yet, while aesthetic appeal is abundant, the movie occasionally falls into the trap of leaning too heavily on visual flair over substantive storytelling. Even so, "Trolls" manages to carve out a niche for itself in the animated film landscape, providing a feel-good experience anchored by memorable music and a message of finding joy in the unlikeliest of places.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation of "Trolls" garners a mixed yet overall positive response due to its commendable technical qualities, despite the content's appeal leaning more towards younger audiences. The movie itself, starring notable talents like Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, embodies a lively yet formulaic family adventure, delivering a heartwarming comedy that's particularly enjoyable for children. From a technical standpoint, this Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment shines with its excellent-quality video. It boasts of a reference-quality 4K image that enhances the movie's vibrant palette and intricate details. Nonetheless, while the HDR coloring presents a unique and somewhat refined viewing experience, it appears slightly darker and less punchy compared to its high definition counterpart. The audio presentation is robust, featuring an excellent Dolby Atmos mix that arguably improves upon the already excellent 7.1 DTS track found on the standard Blu-ray, providing an immersive auditory experience that complements the visual spectacle.
Despite the technical prowess demonstrated in the Ultra HD presentation, the film's narrative and thematic depth might not fully resonate with adult viewers, who may find "Trolls" to be an entertaining yet ultimately shallow experience. The movie's reliance on simple caricatures and explored themes may not sustain the interest of older audiences, though it effectively captivates children with its lively animations and catchy music. Among the special features included, the selection appears somewhat skimpy, with notable exceptions like the inclusion of a fan-friendly assortment of extras, even though there is a clear absence of a DVD copy in the UHD package.
In conclusion, while "Trolls" might not break new ground in animated storytelling, its 4K UHD Blu-ray release offers a technically superior viewing experience that is bound to delight its target audience. The impeccable visual quality coupled with a rewarding Dolby Atmos audio makes this version the definitive choice for fans and owners of 4K UHD systems. While the supplemental materials leave more to be desired, the overall package is recommended for early adopters and families looking for a visually stunning, albeit light-hearted entertainment option for young children.

PlotIn a vibrant and colorful world, the perpetually happy and singing Trolls lead a blissful life, celebrating with parties and spreading joy amongst themselves. The leader of the Trolls, Princess Poppy, embodies the unceasing optimism and energetic spirit of her kind. However, their world is turned upside down when the Troll’s ancient enemies, the gloomy and miserable creatures known as Bergens, invade their village during a raucous celebration. The Bergens believe that the only way to experience happiness is by consuming Trolls, and in a surprise attack, they capture several of Poppy's friends to be the main course at a feast called Trollstice, a Bergen holiday centered around eating Trolls to gain happiness.
Faced with the darkest hour their kind has ever known, the eternally cheerful Poppy refuses to accept defeat. She embarks on a daring rescue mission, determined to save her captured friends from the clutches of the Bergens. On her journey, Poppy enlists the help of Branch, a pessimistic and survivalist Troll who is the polar opposite of Poppy in disposition. Branch has long isolated himself from the other Trolls and prepares for the worst, having lost all hope in the idea of a happy ending. The unlikely pair must work together and venture far beyond the only world they have ever known, confronting challenges and strange new creatures, in a quest that will test their strength and reveal the true power of positivity and friendship.
