Scrooged's DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack delivers a balanced, front-heavy audio experience rich in fidelity and clarity. Robust bass, expansive mid-range, and directional effects enhance scenes with strong ambience and dialogue clarity, while the rear channels favorably support Elfman's score for an enveloping soundfield.

The Blu-ray release of *Scrooged* is disappointing, offering merely the film's theatrical trailer in 1080p as the sole extra, comparable to the DVD and lacking in additional supplements.

Scrooged delivers a unique and uproariously funny take on Dickens’ classic, anchored by Bill Murray's stellar performance as the cold-hearted Frank Cross. Directed by Richard Donner, the film boasts sharp dialogue, engaging energy, and a solid supporting cast. Paramount's Blu-ray release provides strong video and audio quality, making it a must-watch for the holidays.

The Blu-ray presentation of "Scrooged" impresses with a solid 1080p transfer, delivered via an AVC MPEG-4 encode in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The fine detail stands out prominently, highlighting every intricate feature on Bill Murray's expressive face and the crusty details of the ghostly characters. The various low-grade IBC footage is preserved well, maintaining strong clarity supported by slight grain retention which adds a filmic texture. Colors are balanced skillfully; though the film is inherently dark in many sections, the palette remains stable with natural and balanced flesh tones. Instances of minor crush in shadowy corners and a few slightly soft scenes are present but negligible given the overall sharpness and clean appearance of the print.
Delineation of costumes and set designs excels, showcasing fine object detailing vividly. The contrast consistently holds up, providing ample visibility of background elements. Rich blacks with good shadow delineation contribute to an appealing cinematic feel. Despite a handful of scenes losing a bit of sharpness, these are easily attributed to the age of the source material rather than any flaw in the transfer process. The primaries are notably bold and lively, adding warmth and charm to the overall visual experience. No issues with blocking, banding, or other compression artifacts were noted, making this Blu-ray transfer a genuine improvement over previous home video releases. Fans of the 80s classic will undoubtedly be pleased with this high-definition presentation.

Scrooged" features a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack that provides a balanced, satisfying, and robust auditory experience. The track excels in its ability to handle a wide range of audio elements with impressive results. Dialogue is remarkably clear and precisely centered, preserving the witty lines and humor that define the film. Directional effects are strong, evident from the film's outset during the North Pole siege, showcasing a fluid and coherent channel balance. Background ambiance, whether set in IBC's Christmas Carol stage or various offices, is naturally enveloping, offering subtle but effective back-channel support to enhance immersion.
The soundtrack's fidelity and warmth contribute to a full-bodied presentation that elevates both musical and action sequences. Low-frequency effects are strong and balanced, providing depth without overpowering scenes or appearing disingenuous. Musical elements, particularly Danny Elfman's festive score, benefit from expansive mid-range clarity with certain notes bleeding into the rear channels to create an engaging soundfield. While the rear channels mainly support the music, they also contribute to the overall immersive experience, making this lossless mix both enjoyable and sophisticated.
Overall, the DTS-HD Master Audio offers a marvelous balance between action bursts and dialogue clarity, with responsive bass and enriching ambiance that make this track a first-rate audio experience for "Scrooged.

The Blu-ray release of "Scrooged" is notably sparse in its supplementary content. Paramount has missed an opportunity to enhance the viewer's experience by including only the original theatrical trailer as the singular bonus feature. This minimalistic approach is disappointing, particularly for fans and collectors who anticipate additional behind-the-scenes insights, interviews, or commentary that enrich the understanding and appreciation of the film.
Extras included in this disc:
- Theatrical Trailer: The original trailer in HD, also available in the DVD edition.

"Scrooged" on Blu-ray exemplifies Paramount's strong offering in both video and audio, bringing to life an unconventional yet engaging adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." Bill Murray stars as Frank Cross, a cutthroat television executive whose character arc from cynicism to redemption is both believable and captivating. His performance, embodying Cross's transformation through his interactions with three ghosts, drives the film with a mix of humor and heartfelt sincerity. The blend of comedy and retrospection is seamless, capturing the essence of Dickens' original tale while infusing it with a modern, satirical twist.
The supporting cast bolsters Murray's magnetic presence, with standout performances from Karen Allen as his compassionate ex-girlfriend and Alfre Woodard as his overworked assistant. John Forsythe, Robert Mitchum, Carol Kane, and Bobcat Goldthwait add layers of humor and warmth to the narrative. Richard Donner's direction, complemented by Danny Elfman's musical score, is both energetic and poignant. The script, penned by Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue, cleverly satirizes modern priorities while remaining true to the story's core themes of redemption and generosity.
Overall, "Scrooged" maintains a lively pace with its darkly comic undertones and imaginative retelling of a classic story. Nearing its 25th anniversary, it continues to charm audiences with its unique take on holiday cheer, making it a perennial favorite for its devoted followers. The Blu-ray presentation ensures that both the comedic and heartfelt moments are delivered with clarity and precision, providing a viewing experience that retains its magic year after year.

"Scrooged" presents a lively modernization of Charles Dicken's timeless "A Christmas Carol," blending the classic tale with a unique 80s twist. The film, headlined by Bill Murray, delivers a mix of infectious energy and hilarity, making it a staple for holiday enjoyment. Functional contrasts span the first act's refreshing divergence from traditional narratives to familiar elements that surface with the appearance of the spirits. The ensuing narrative, though predictably redemptive, intertwines humor and poignant reformation in a distinctive style. Paramount's Blu-ray rendition further enriches this experience with commendable upgrades in visual and audio quality despite a notable absence of supplementary features.
Detailing its technical prowess, the Blu-ray edition offers a significantly enhanced picture quality, benefiting from modern remastering techniques that reveal finer details and vibrant colors. Complementing this visual uplift is a clearer and richer audio presentation that ensures all dialogue, sound effects, and the memorable score resonate well within home theater environments. This edition’s pairing of high-definition video and immersive audio crafts a viewing experience that befits the film’s spirited tone and comedic exuberance. However, the disc leaves enthusiasts desiring in terms of extras—where even a short retrospective or a making-of featurette would have added valuable context and depth.
In conclusion, "Scrooged" on Blu-ray stands as an engaging and dynamic interpretation of a Christmas classic. With its improved audiovisual presentation, the film retains its charm and humor even decades after its release. Despite the sparse supplementary content, the Blu-ray is a worthwhile purchase for both devoted fans and newcomers alike, embedding itself firmly within the cherished holiday traditions of comedic and heartwarming storytelling. Recommended for its delightful blend of nostalgia and newfound cinematic clarity.

PlotFrank Cross is a cynical and selfish television executive who has let his lust for power and success overshadow any semblance of humanity or kindness. Tasked with producing a live Christmas Eve broadcast of "A Christmas Carol," he shows little regard for the well-being of his staff, pushing them to their limits and firing an employee for voicing a mild disagreement. Frank's obsession with ratings and his career has alienated him from friends, family, and the woman he once loved, Claire, who represented the warmth and affection he has since discarded.
On the eve of the production, Frank is visited by the ghost of his former mentor, Lew Hayward, who warns him that he is headed for a dark, lonely end if he doesn't change his ways. Lew informs Frank that he will be visited by three ghosts who will take him on journeys that force him to confront his past, present, and the dire implications of his future. As Frank experiences these spectral encounters, each one peels back a layer of his hardened exterior, presenting him with visions that lead to moments of insight and remorse about the decisions he has made and the person he has become.
