The Blu-ray release of "Ulysses" from Kino Lorber showcases a highly commendable 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition presentation in the original 1.37:1 full-frame aspect ratio, based on a new 4K master. This restoration impresses with its clean print, free from prominent scratches, dirt, or debris. Colors are particularly pleasing, capturing the vibrancy of Technicolor and the striking blues, contributing significantly to the film's visual appeal. The encode effectively highlights the work of cinematographer Harold Rosson, ensuring both dramatic and action-packed sequences like the Cyclops confrontation are rendered beautifully in high definition.
Further enhancing the experience, the original theatrical aspect ratio is preserved meticulously in both the English and Italian versions, selectable from the main menu. The 4K master delivers astounding sharp detail, excellent contrast, and largely solid black levels, although not always achieving the deepest blacks. While there is a minor incidence of moiré on some netting and a corduroy coat, this is minimal and does not detract from the overall visual integrity. Additionally, the sharp and easy-to-read white subtitles for the Italian version enhance accessibility. The film is conveniently divided into 9 chapters, facilitating navigation and viewing pleasure.

The audio presentation of the Blu Ray release of "Ulysses" is rendered in DTS HD Master Audio mono, available in both English and Italian. This lossless audio encoding ensures a consistent and clear listening experience throughout the entire film. When choosing the Italian language option, the original Italian voices are used, except for Kirk Douglas, who is dubbed into Italian. For the English version, all Italian cast members are dubbed, with Kirk Douglas providing his own voice for the English track. Optional English subtitles are available to aid understanding. While the dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow, some viewers may find the English dubbing slightly out of sync and lacking the natural flow found in the Italian performances.
The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono track reflects the typical post-dubbing practices of its era, resulting in an airless quality with minimal echo. This effect could be attributed to the post-synched sound technology prevalent during the period of this film's production. Despite these inherent characteristics, the engineers have done an exemplary job in eradicating age-related anomalies like hiss, crackle, pops, and flutter. The dialogue, Alessandro Cicognini's background score, and sound effects are professionally blended, although the audio track may lack a bit of bass depth. Overall, the sound design lends balance between music, effects, and dialogue, making it a well-rounded auditory experience despite minor shortcomings.

"Ulysses" (1954), directed by Mario Camerini, is a seminal adaptation of Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey." The film features a standout performance by Kirk Douglas as the titular hero, Ulysses, showcasing his versatility and physical prowess. Douglas, backed by the inspired dual-role portrayal by Silvana Mangano as both Penelope and Circe, makes the film a must-see for classic cinema enthusiasts. This Italian-American co-production captures the spirit of the Homer's adventures with imaginative sequences, including confrontations with the Cyclops, Sirens, and the sorceress Circe. The screenplay, penned by a formidable team of writers including Ben Hecht and Irwin Shaw, balances dramatic romance and high-stakes action but exhibits a somewhat choppy narrative flow.
The film's production values contribute significantly to its epic feel. Harold Rosson's cinematography is exemplary, vividly bringing to life Flavio Mogherini's detailed production design. Each scene is meticulously crafted, showcasing lush outdoor visuals and evocative set pieces. The musical score by Alessandro Cicognini further elevates the film, providing a rich auditory backdrop that underscores both quiet moments and grandiose action sequences. Camerini’s direction alongside editor Leo Catozzo ensures a dynamic pace, keeping the audience engaged through every twist and turn.
The narrative intricately intertwines Ulysses' past exploits with his present struggle to reclaim his home and family from suitors after a decade-long absence. Notable set pieces include the expertly staged Cyclops encounter and Ulysses' climactic return to Ithaca. Performances by Anthony Quinn as the formidable suitor Antinous and Franco Interlenghi as Telemachus add depth to this vivid retelling. Overall, "Ulysses" impressively encapsulates the mythic scope of its source material, making it quintessential viewing for fans of classic adventures and mythological tales.

Mario Camerini’s "Ulysses" stands as an ambitious and visually striking adaptation of Homer’s timeless epic, "The Odyssey." Featuring a compelling lead performance by Kirk Douglas, the film effectively condenses the intricate narrative into an accessible and engaging story. This Blu-ray edition from Kino Lorber showcases an impeccable 4K remaster that brings out the film's historic grandeur and rich visual detail, making it a must-see for both aficionados of classic cinema and newcomers alike.
The production quality is outstanding, with meticulous attention to visual and auditory elements that elevate the overall experience. The direction by Mario Camerini is exceptional, balancing moments of high action with quieter, more introspective scenes. While the narrative occasionally falters in its fidelity to the source material, it remains a captivating precursor to later, more elaborate epics from Hollywood's golden age of spectacle cinema in the mid to late 1950s.
In conclusion, "Ulysses" is a robust, action-packed retelling of an ancient tale that captures the essence of Homer’s epic. Its Blu-ray release is distinguished by its stunning visual quality and valuable bonus materials. This version of "Ulysses" comes highly recommended for Kirk Douglas enthusiasts and those who appreciate pioneering efforts in epic filmmaking.
