The Blu-ray release of “Pitch Black” showcases the film in a 1080p, 2.35:1 aspect ratio, presenting a visual feast that plays with a variety of styles and textures throughout its runtime. Initially greeting viewers with a rather standard, dimly lit setting inside a transport vessel, the presentation quickly shifts gears as it exposes the harsh and desolate landscapes of an alien planet. The transfer captures the fine details of the spacecraft's interiors with remarkable clarity, allowing the audience to appreciate subtle textures and instrument panels like never before. As the scene transitions to the planet's surface, viewers are treated to an intensely over-saturated palette, mimicking the hostile environment through blown out whites and deep oranges, alongside a shift to a stark, blue-tinted nighttime that remains consistently impressive in its detail and color handling despite the intentionally heavy processing.
Notably, this Blu-ray edition does not deviate in terms of technical specifications from its HD DVD predecessor but manages to impress with its VC-1 encode. Both daylight and nighttime scenes excel in resolution, revealing intricacies such as rock textures and landscape variations previously muddled in lower definitions. The film’s deliberate visual contrasts and color manipulations challenge the transfer, yet it maintains an admirable balance—deep blacks and clean whites dominate without veering into compression artifacts or unnecessary noise. Color reproduction stands out, particularly in the vividness of certain elements against the bleak backdrop, with blood splatters providing a stark contrast to the predominantly muted tones. Despite occasional white and black speckles over the print and some noticeable noise in darker scenes, this release surpasses DVD quality significantly, presenting “Pitch Black” in a light that enhances its visual storytelling without compromising on the gritty, distinctive look that defines the movie.
In summary, the Blu-ray edition of "Pitch Black" delivers a compelling visual experience that faithfully preserves the film’s varied aesthetic choices from the claustrophobic confines of its spaceship to the vast, unforgiving landscapes of an alien world. The carefully calibrated over-saturation and contrast levels contribute to a vivid portrayal of the film's desolate settings, while still allowing for rich detail and texture visibility across both dark and light scenes. Despite minor flaws such as speckles and noise, the Blu-ray offers a definitive viewing that will satisfy fans and newcomers alike, ensuring that the visual intricacies and color dynamics of “Pitch Black” can be fully appreciated in high definition.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack on the 'Pitch Black' Blu-ray presentation from Universal is a testament to the film's intricate sound design, elevating the immersive experience from its opening sequences through to its intense climax. Right from the start, the film engulfs the viewer in a dark, atmospheric soundscape, with the unmistakable rumble of deep space silence giving way to a foreboding score that perfectly encapsulates the film's mood. The sounds of the ship's hull rattling and Riddick's inner musings are delivered with a gritty realism that is both engaging and nuanced. The sound design truly shines as the ship encounters turbulence, with every screech, thud, and whisper of debris creating a palpable sense of chaos, meticulously balanced across the channels to envelop the listener in the unfolding disaster.
As the narrative progresses, the soundtrack amplifies the on-screen action with a blend of tribal beats and crisp sound effects that resonate well beyond the screen, bringing Riddick's alien world to life. Gunshots, creature screeches, and environmental elements like rainstorms are rendered with exceptional clarity and positioning, creating a dynamic auditory experience. The intricacy of the soundtrack’s mixing ensures dialogue remains clear against the backdrop of this vibrant soundscape. However, while offering an upgrade over previous formats in terms of depth and clarity, especially in the low-end frequencies, it does exhibit a more front-biased sound field with less directional nuance than some contemporary mixes.
Despite these minor discrepancies, the overall sound quality is significantly enhanced in this DTS-HD MA track compared to its predecessors on Dolby Digital Plus or DTS DVD. The mix provides a tight, atmospheric experience that supports both the aggression and ambiance inherent in 'Pitch Black's' setting. While not without its quiet moments or occasional need for volume adjustment, the soundtrack boasts improved transparency, dynamic range, and a punchier bass, making it a commendable auditory component that greatly contributes to the overall viewing experience of this sci-fi thriller.
Extras: 53
The Blu-ray release of "Pitch Black" offers a comprehensive suite of extras that cater to both fans of the franchise and cinephiles with an appetite for the technicalities of filmmaking. Notably, the edition includes both the theatrical and an unrated director's cut of the film, enhancing its appeal. The dual audio commentaries, one with Writer/Director David Twohy along with stars Vin Diesel and Cole Hauser, and the other featuring Twohy, Producer Tom Engelman, and Visual Effects Supervisor Peter Chiang, provide contrasting yet deep insights into the movie's production. The cast commentary is more accessible, offering entertaining anecdotes and a candid look at the film's making, while the technical commentary delves into the minutiae of special effects and design, likely appealing more to hardcore fans and those with a keen interest in filmmaking craft. Despite some extras feeling like promotional fluff, such as the brief featurettes on the making of "Pitch Black" and "Dark Fury," the overall package presents a decent range of content that somewhat mirrors what was available on previous HD DVD and DVD versions, though the addition of BD-Live capability offers a nod towards more interactive content.
Extras included in this disc:

"Pitch Black" emerges as a standout in the science fiction genre, not merely for its visual spectacle and thrilling narrative but significantly for its depth in character development and adept storytelling. Under the guidance of writer/director David Twohy, the film excels in portraying a desolate world where survivors of a crash-landing, including the enigmatic criminal Riddick, played with a compelling blend of menace and heroism by Vin Diesel, and his captor, Johns, must confront not only external threats but also the complexities within their ranks. The movie’s keen focus on the dynamics among the survivors, set against the backdrop of an alien world with its unique challenges, elevates "Pitch Black" beyond conventional sci-fi action into a study of survival, leadership, and moral ambiguity.
In visual terms, "Pitch Black" benefits from David Eggby's cinematography, which adeptly captures the bleak yet fascinating landscapes of the alien planet, enhancing the film's tense atmosphere. Despite its relatively modest budget, the movie showcases inventive use of visual effects to depict the nocturnal predators that our protagonists face. However, it's worth noting that some CGI elements, particularly the creatures, might not hold up to scrutinization for their less convincing appearance. This, alongside a subplot involving the character Jack that arguably adds little to the overall narrative, represents minor blemishes in an otherwise engrossing experience.
At its core, "Pitch Black" transcends its status as an 'ALIEN' derivative by leveraging Twohy's sharp direction and a powerful performance by Diesel. The film cleverly manipulates audience allegiances through its exploration of good versus evil, blurring lines and challenging preconceptions about heroism and villainy. This nuanced moral landscape, combined with gripping survival action and strategic uses of darkness and light, certifies "Pitch Black" as not only a critical piece in the Riddick saga but also a distinguished entry in the science fiction genre that surpasses expectations set by its initial limited theatrical impact.

"Pitch Black," a film celebrated for its innovative fusion of horror and science fiction elements, continues to captivate audiences with its tale of survival, moral ambiguity, and the exploration of humanity's darker and lighter sides. The storyline delves into the complexities of good vs. evil, challenging viewers to consider the essence of true heroism and redemption through adversity. Its protagonist, Riddick, embodies the quintessential anti-hero, charming and enigmatic, whose journey encapsulates the movie's core themes of trust, survival, and self-discovery against a backdrop of alien threats and inter-personal dynamics reminiscent of classic horror and slasher films. Universal's Blu-ray release enhances this experience with a stellar video transfer, near-reference quality audio, and a comprehensive collection of bonus materials that further enrich the viewing experience, making it an essential addition for fans and newcomers alike.
The technical presentation of the Blu-ray is commendable, showcasing meticulous attention to preserving the film's atmospheric visuals and dynamic sound design. The video quality is impressive, ensuring that the intricate details of the alien landscape and the ominous darkness that permeates the film are rendered with clarity and depth. The audio experience is immersive, capturing the tense ambiance and the intricacies of the film's suspenseful score. Together, these elements contribute to a viewing experience that is both engaging and technically satisfying, complemented by an array of bonus features that offer insightful behind-the-scenes perspectives and enhance the overall appreciation of the film.
In conclusion, "Pitch Black" on Blu-ray stands out as a modern classic that successfully marries the essence of horror with deep narrative exploration, all while offering a rich audio-visual experience. Its presentation on Blu-ray not only pays homage to the film's original allure but elevates it with superior technical quality and engaging extras. Whether for its thrilling story, complex characters, or exceptional production values, this release is highly recommended for those seeking to dive into a sci-fi tale that goes beyond conventional genre boundaries to offer something truly memorable.

PlotA commercial transport ship traveling through deep space suffers critical damage from a comet tail, forcing an emergency crash landing on an unknown desert-like planet. Among the survivors are the ship's pilot, Carolyn Fry, who struggles with the responsibility of leadership; the paying passengers, which include a young boy, a Muslim Imam and his followers, a wealthy antiquities dealer, and a law officer; and the dangerous convict, Richard B. Riddick, who is being transported in cryostasis by the officer. The survivors quickly realize the harsh environment and glaring sunlight of the planet is the least of their concerns, as they need to find water and food to survive.
The group discovers an abandoned geological research settlement equipped with a well. However, they learn that the planet is about to experience a month-long total eclipse, which happens once every 22 years. As darkness approaches, they encounter a horde of biomechanoid creatures that inhabit the planet, which have a lethal aversion to light and emerge from the underground to hunt. The survivors must find a way to use light as a defense against these creatures as they strive to navigate the treacherous and dark terrain in a desperate bid to reach an emergency escape shuttle and leave the planet. Tensions rise as they come to terms with the fact that Riddick, a man with surgically-enhanced eyes that enable him to see in the dark, may be their only hope for survival.
