The Blu-ray presentation of "Despicable Me 3" is an absolute showcase of digital perfection, thanks to a phenomenal 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode. The visual fidelity is remarkable, featuring impeccable textural details and a dazzling array of colors. From the deep, inky black levels to the crystal-clear rendering of every minute element, this release sets a high benchmark for animated films on Blu-ray. The bit rate hovers around the high 30s, ensuring the integrity and brilliance of the picture. Viewers can appreciate every nuanced detail from the Minions’ denim overalls to the vibrant explosions of color throughout the film.
The 2.35:1 aspect ratio presentation excels with sumptuous color reproduction and a well-balanced contrast. Primary colors burst forth with vitality – the exuberant yellows of the Minions, the warm pinks surrounding Edith and Agnes, and Lucy's vibrant cyan-teal outfits. Every lavish color scheme is amplified with perfect saturation and balance, delivering an animated visual spectacle that is nothing short of breathtaking. Even in scenes with darker tones, such as Gru’s varied shades of coal gray clothing, the blacks are rich and detailed, maintaining excellent shadow detail without any artifacting.
Moreover, the detailed digital artistry is highlighted with exceptional clarity. Every scene brims with razor-sharp lines, whether it’s the cracks in Freedonia’s antiquated shop walls or the fine threads in Edith's woolly sweater. The detailing extends to environmental aspects like cityscapes and gadgets, making every shot a visual treat. This Blu-ray release truly harnesses the potential of high-definition to bring out striking animated details, ensuring a top-tier viewing experience for fans and new audiences alike.

"Despicable Me 3" delivers an impressively vibrant audio presentation with its DTS:X Master Audio soundtrack on both the 4K UHD and standard 1080p Blu-ray discs. The track excels in creating an energetic and immersive listening experience, notably featuring a dynamic arsenal of 80s pop hits like Michael Jackson's “Bad” and Nena's “99 Luftballons.” These tracks are rendered with robust stage presence, maintaining exceptional instrumental and lyrical clarity. The soundtrack’s balance is commendable, seamlessly integrating dialogue with action sequences, thereby ensuring that each sonic element is given appropriate emphasis without overshadowing others.
The surround and overhead channels are utilized effectively to enhance immersion, with discrete sounds such as laser blasts and jet engine roars delivered with forcefulness and precision. While there are some minor moments where the overheads could be more assertive—such as during a significant rain sequence—the overall implementation is still impressive. Scenes of large-scale action exhibit seamless movement around the sound stage, with clear, precise dialogue that stands out even amidst the most frantic sequences.
Additionally, the soundfield is expanded with amusingly satisfying ambient effects emanating from the sides and rears, like Minions dropping from above or rockets zooming towards their targets. The front channels continuously maintain broad and expansive imaging, allowing background noises to pan fluidly and creating a pronounced sense of presence and space. The low-end is particularly commanding during explosive scenes but remains responsive and hearty throughout, contributing to a room-energizing experience. Overall, "Despicable Me 3" provides a wonderfully dynamic and well-balanced audio track that heightens the film's comedic and action-packed moments with expert clarity and engaging depth.

Despicable Me 3 continues to strike a balance between humor and heart, making it a delightful addition to the franchise. While not as groundbreaking as its predecessors, it carries enough charm and zest to keep audiences entertained. The film introduces Balthazar Bratt, an amusing new villain voiced by Trey Parker, whose nostalgic 80s-inspired antics provide an invigorating breath of fresh air. Bratt’s character, a disgruntled former child star, adds a layer of absurdity and wit, making for some highly entertaining scenes. The storyline sees Gru, now partnered with his new wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), grappling with their dismissal from the Anti-Villain League while dealing with family dynamics and the discovery of Gru's long-lost twin brother Dru.
Steve Carell delivers a versatile performance, voicing both Gru and Dru, bringing dual charisma to the screen. Dru’s character is an optimistic foil to Gru, yearning to follow in the villainous footsteps of their legacy. As Gru reluctantly agrees to teach him the tricks of the trade, their hijinks against Bratt unfold in a series of colorful and humorous escapades. However, the film recycles some familiar tropes from its predecessors, which may result in diminishing returns for some viewers. Nonetheless, the blend of action, comedy, and familial themes remains compelling, albeit somewhat predictable.
The Minions, though less central in this installment, still provide their signature slapstick humor and whimsical charm. Their side adventure, although ancillary to the main plot, offers numerous laughs and maintains the film’s lively energy. The movie excels in its vibrant animation and clever character interactions but suffers slightly from a lack of innovative storytelling. Despicable Me 3 is ultimately a fun family film that entertains with its vivid visuals and humorous antics, despite not breaking new ground in narrative depth. Fans of the franchise will appreciate its familiar formula and the added dynamics introduced by new and returning characters.
Total: 74
"Despicable Me 3" continues the comedic adventures of Gru and his Minions, providing an amusing yet familiar experience for both longtime fans and newcomers of the series. Gru remains as endearingly grumpy as ever, while Trey Parker’s portrayal of the villain adds a fresh and thrilling twist to the story. Although the film doesn't significantly advance the franchise's overarching narrative, it successfully balances heartfelt moments with slapstick humor. Universal delivers a stunning Blu-ray presentation, capturing the vibrant animations and engaging character designs in glorious 1080p, making it a visual delight.
The technical specifications of this Blu-ray release are commendable, with a 2.39:1 AVC aspect ratio ensuring a cinematic viewing experience. The audio experience is equally impressive, featuring an English DTS:X (DTS-HD MA 7.1 Core) soundtrack that brings out the dynamic elements of the film's sound design. Additional audio options in Spanish DTS-HD HR 7.1 and French DTS 5.1 enhance accessibility. With a runtime of 90 minutes, the movie keeps its pacing tight, although minor trimming could have enhanced its overall fluidity.
In conclusion, "Despicable Me 3" is a charming addition to the franchise that retains its appeal through well-executed humor and heartfelt family dynamics. Its stunning Blu-ray release with reference-quality video and exceptional audio makes this package a worthy pick-up for fans. While not as groundbreaking as earlier entries, it ensures that both kids and adults are entertained, reaffirming its place as an enjoyable family film. Recommended for a fun-filled watch.

PlotGru, a former villain turned Anti-Villain League (AVL) agent, faces a new challenge when he is fired from the AVL. He and his wife Lucy fail to capture Balthazar Bratt, a former child star turned supervillain obsessed with the character he played in the '80s. Bratt manages to steal a very expensive diamond, which leads to Gru and Lucy's termination given their failure to apprehend him. Dejected, Gru struggles with the idea of going back to his villainous ways despite the temptation and urging from his Minions. In the midst of this crisis, Gru discovers he has a twin brother.
Gru meets his long-lost twin, Dru, who is blond, cheerful, and successful, with an enormous, lavish mansion and a private army of minions. Dru reveals their father was a legendary villain, and he wishes to continue the family legacy. He admires Gru's past as a villain and seeks his mentorship to learn the ways of villainy. Gru is initially reluctant but is persuaded by the prospect of using this opportunity to get back at Bratt for his earlier defeat and the loss of his job. Meanwhile, Lucy is finding her feet as a new mom to Gru's adopted daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, and Gru's Minions, longing for a return to villainy, find themselves on their own adventure.
