The 20th anniversary Blu-ray of 'Zathura: A Space Adventure' offers a sharp, detailed 1080p picture with vibrant colors and rich blacks, matching the 2011 release. However, heavy processing affects some scenes, especially darker ones, giving skin tones an unnatural, waxy appearance. Despite these issues, it's a solid catalog release by Sony.

The 20th anniversary Blu-ray re-release of "Zathura: A Space Adventure" leverages the same transfer utilized in the 2011 release, and while this results in a familiar experience for existing owners, it remains a solid presentation. Encoding is processed through MPEG-4 AVC, delivering a 1080p resolution at a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. This sharp transfer offers noteworthy depth and clarity, with intricate details evident during action sequences. Highlights include the meticulously scarred exterior of the killer robot and the textured skin of the Zorgons. However, in dimly lit scenes, there's a noticeable waxy effect on character faces, hinting at the possible overuse of Digital Noise Reduction (DNR). Such instances detract slightly from an otherwise detailed image, but natural skintones somewhat mitigate this deficiency.
The color palette in "Zathura" is vibrant and well-balanced, showcasing rich hues that do not overwhelm despite the vivid scenes of rocket boosters and fiery explosions. Blacks are generally deep and contribute to improved sharpness and definition, but there are moments towards the film's conclusion where black levels appear flat and obscure detail. Despite these minor shortcomings, the colors remain consistently robust, especially in Earth-bound settings where a rustic aesthetic contrasts effectively against the fantastical elements. Notably, flesh tones retain a natural appearance throughout while fine details like freckles and makeup are clearly visible.
In summary, while "Zathura's" video presentation may not reach demo-worthy heights, it executes a proficient and appealing display fitting for a catalog release. The image is overall sharp and detailed without significant noise or artifacts, making it an enjoyable viewing experience for fans of the film.

The 10th anniversary re-release of "Zathura: A Space Adventure" carries forward the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack found in its previous edition. This audio mix stands out with its engaging and dynamic presentation, ideal for an action-packed cinematic experience. From the moment the kids are transported to outer space, the auditory immersion is profound. The soundtrack masterfully integrates John Debney’s adventure-centric score, delivering exceptional clarity and fidelity. Dialogue reproduction is impeccable; even in chaotic action scenes, every word is distinctly audible, ensuring nothing is lost amid the excitement.
Technically, the English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is accompanied by additional audio options in French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai, all in Dolby Digital 5.1. The surround sound presentation is noteworthy, skillfully utilizing rear speakers to create a multidirectional sound field that immerses you in the action. Sound effects like incoming blasts from the Zorgon ships, the crashing of walls by a rogue robot, and the clatter of meteor showers precisely fill the room, heightening the sense of spatial awareness. The subwoofer's low-frequency extension is utilized effectively, with house destruction, explosions, and stomping robots delivering a potent rumble that adds to the visceral thrill of the movie.
In conclusion, "Zathura's" audio mix is an outstanding example of how a well-engineered soundtrack can enhance the viewing experience. The mix captures the energy and excitement of the film with precision and force, making it a highly satisfying auditory adventure. It surpasses expectations of an action-filled adventure film, drawing viewers into its vivid soundscape from start to finish.

Jon Favreau's "Zathura: A Space Adventure" is an exhilarating science fiction film that transcends its potential as merely "Jumanji in space." The film deftly combines thrilling adventures with heartfelt emotional stakes, featuring two quarrelsome brothers, Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and Danny (Jonah Bobo), who find themselves propelled into the depths of space by a mysterious board game. Unlike its predecessor "Jumanji," "Zathura" imbues its narrative with genuine sibling rivalry and complex family dynamics, bolstered by the struggles of their father (Tim Robbins) to balance his attention. The film admirably captures the competitive spirit and animosity inherent to brotherhood, making their emotional journey as compelling as their interstellar adventure.
Favreau's direction shines through with a remarkable use of practical effects, puppets, and animatronics that lend a sense of realism and whimsy. The juxtaposition of physical effects with digital enhancements creates a seamless viewing experience that maintains a childlike sense of wonder. The perilous escapades involving meteor showers, aliens, and a malfunctioning robot not only provide high-octane entertainment but also trigger significant character development, pushing the siblings to reconcile and work together to survive. The film also makes excellent use of Dax Shepard as a stranded astronaut, adding both humor and dramatic weight to the narrative.
"Zathura" benefits from strong performances by its young cast, particularly in portraying the realistic sibling dynamics central to the story. The narrative cleverly uses the fantastical elements of the game to highlight themes of family and cooperation. This film stands as a notable achievement in the family adventure genre, blending action sequences and special effects with a rich emotional core. It ultimately outshines "Jumanji" by integrating more meaningful character arcs and delivering a more enjoyable and emotionally resonant experience for audiences of all ages.

The 2005 film "Zathura: A Space Adventure" receives a respectable Blu-ray release, demonstrating solid technical capabilities in both video and audio quality. The improved visuals deliver a vibrant and immersive experience, particularly notable in the film's special effects that greatly benefit from high-definition clarity. The sound design is equally impressive, with a dynamic range of audio that enhances the adventurous atmosphere of the film. "Zathura" itself surpasses "Jumanji" in terms of direction, acting, and overall execution, providing an engaging story with substantive weight.
However, the supplemental content on this Blu-ray release leaves much to be desired. While the Chris Van Allsburg reading is a pleasant addition for fans, it falls short of justifying an upgrade. The bulk of the new material seems to function more as promotional content for the "Goosebumps" movie rather than truly value-adding extras for "Zathura" itself. This is somewhat disappointing for long-time fans who might have expected more substantial behind-the-scenes content or interviews.
For new collectors who haven't yet added "Zathura" to their home video library, this Blu-ray is undoubtedly the version to buy, offering top-notch video and audio enhancements. However, existing owners of previous releases, particularly those from 2011, will find very little reason to invest in this new edition. The minimal new content does not warrant the additional cost unless one has a particular interest in supplementary "Goosebumps" content.
Frankly, there's not much here to make this worth an upgrade, and there's even less than the companion Jumanji anniversary release. The Chris Van Allsburg reading is a nice touch but hardly worth the upgrade cost. The rest of the content is nothing more than advertising for the Goosebumps movie. This is certainly the version to buy for fans who have yet to add Zathura to their Blu-ray collections, but previous owners should stick with what they have.
