Groundhog Day's 4K UHD Blu-ray release represents a substantial upgrade with a 2160p image, HDR10, and Dolby Vision. The new 4K scan retains film grain naturally, improving textures, colors, and black levels significantly over the Blu-ray. This results in a richer, more dynamic cinematic experience.
Audio: 73
The Dolby Atmos upgrade for 'Groundhog Day' significantly enhances the soundstage with improved clarity, spatial depth, and natural ambiance, while preserving dialogue clarity and the film's original essence. Though it’s not bombastic, it effectively utilizes surround channels for a fuller, more immersive experience.
Extra: 71
Groundhog Day's 4K UHD extras disappoint with no new content, featuring recycled supplements from previous editions such as Harold Ramis's audio commentary, 'The Weight of Time' documentary, and themed segments like Needle Nose Ned's Picture-in-Picture, all housed on the Blu-ray disc.

Groundhog Day's 4K UHD release perfectly captures the film’s blend of comedy and heart with a high-quality 4K/HDR picture and immersive Atmos audio, while maintaining its narrative depth and humor. Bill Murray delivers a standout performance as Phil Connors, whose journey from cynicism to redemption remains a timeless classic.

Sony Pictures' 4K UHD release of "Groundhog Day" offers a significant visual upgrade over previous Blu-ray editions. The film, originally shot on 35mm with Panavision cameras, has been carefully remastered using a 4K Digital Intermediate (DI) process. The disc provides a 3840 x 2160p resolution in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, employing 10-bit video depth, Wide Colour Gamut (WCG), and High Dynamic Range (HDR) encoded with the HEVC (H.265) codec for HDR10. The level of detail is extraordinary, enhancing elements like skin texture, fabrics, and environmental features such as snow and groundhog fur. Grain structure is well-preserved, contributing to a natural, filmic look without appearing overly digital.
One of the immediate highlights is the rich color palette and improved dynamic range introduced by HDR and WCG. These enhancements create a more vibrant and lifelike image that surpasses the occasionally harsh 1080p visuals of earlier Blu-rays. Brightness and contrast levels are finely tuned; blacks are deeper, showcasing better shadow detail, while whites are purer, giving the snow-covered scenes a particularly crisp feel. The HDR pass has been subtly applied, avoiding overwhelming enhancements to achieve a finely balanced visual upgrade.
Additionally, the new 4K transfer faithfully retains the film's grainy aesthetic, ensuring an organic texture throughout. This is evident in scenes featuring intricate manmade details like pavement, brickwork, and various textures in indoor settings such as the diner and bed & breakfast. The color grading also sees improvements; skin tones appear more natural, and primary colors stand out with improved vibrance. Despite "Groundhog Day" being a deliberately bleak winter film, these enhancements bring subtle yet notable improvements to its overall visual appeal. In summary, the updated 4K UHD presentation is a comprehensive upgrade, making it an invaluable addition for both longtime fans and new viewers alike.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray of "Groundhog Day" comes with a newly mixed Dolby Atmos track that elevates the auditory experience beyond the previous 5.1 TrueHD format. The Atmos mix, though not overtly bombastic, provides a broader acoustic range and enhances the overall soundstage with its natural, immersive quality. For instance, ambient sounds in crowd and party scenes bring a new layer of realism without overwhelming the listener. Dialogues remain clear and naturally situated, while George Fenton’s soft rock score benefits from a more expansive presentation that enriches the listener's experience without overpowering the film’s comedic essence.
Dolby Atmos subtly complements the film’s thematic elements, using overhead and surround channels primarily for atmospheric enhancement rather than attention-grabbing effects. This allows for an engaging auditory experience during scenes like Phil's repetitive wake-up call with "I Got You Babe," which audibly marks the beginning of each Groundhog Day with an impressively open and airy feel. Environmental sounds, such as gusty winds and traffic noises, are well-fleshed out, creating an immersive wintery atmosphere that enhances the film's setting. Additionally, sound effects like car chases and footsteps in the snow are nuanced yet impactful, adding depth without overshadowing the dialogue.
While some may argue that the Dolby Atmos upgrade is somewhat overkill for a film with such straightforward sound requirements, the enhancement is evident when considering elements like the film’s opening song and critical atmospheric details. The low-end support during intense scenes enriches the overall soundstage, transforming an otherwise simple sonic landscape into a more dynamic auditory field. This new Dolby Atmos mix, while maintaining the film's original auditory essence, provides a noticeable increase in scope and clarity, making it a commendable enhancement over previous audio formats.
Extras: 71
The extras for the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Groundhog Day" remain unchanged from earlier editions, consolidating all supplementary content onto the included Blu-ray. Specific features like Harold Ramis' insightful audio commentary and the semi-entertaining Needle Nose Ned's Picture-in-Picture track are consistent highlights. Unfortunately, no new content has been generated for this 25th Anniversary release, mirroring the material available from the 15th Anniversary edition. This lack of new supplements might disappoint avid fans looking for fresh retrospectives or updated cast and crew interviews. Nevertheless, the legacy features present a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the film's creation and cultural impact.
Extras included in this disc:
- Audio Commentary with Director Harold Ramis: In-depth insights into the film's production.
- A Different Day: An Interview with Harold Ramis: Short interview with the director.
- The Weight of Time: Documentary covering the making of the film.
- The Study of Groundhogs: A Real Life Look at Marmots: Exploration of marmots in real life.
- Needle Nose Ned's Picture-in-Picture Track: Trivia presented by Ned in character.
- Deleted Scenes: Six scenes offering additional context.

In Groundhog Day, Bill Murray delivers an unforgettable performance as Phil Connors, a cynical TV weatherman who finds himself stuck in an unending loop of reliving the same day. Directed by Harold Ramis, the film ingeniously combines humor and heart, making it a timeless classic. Murray's sardonic wit and comedic talent are perfectly matched by Andie MacDowell, who plays his new producer, Rita. This unlikely love story unfolds amidst the repetitiveness, where every action has consequences, and each repeated day becomes a step in Phil's journey towards self-improvement. It's a film that masterfully balances humor and poignant storytelling, encapsulating universal themes of redemption and personal growth.
The narrative's strength lies in its simplicity—a "Scrooge" archetype faced with his flaws must transform to break free from an eternal cycle. The cyclical repetition serves as an unyielding mirror, forcing Phil to confront his narcissism and evolve. Initial humorous escapades give way to deeper realizations as Phil matures, finding value in the people he once dismissed. Murray excels in this role, delivering deadpan jokes with perfect timing while exploring a more nuanced, serious side. MacDowell's portrayal of Rita brings an accessible charm, adding depth to the romantic subplot. Chris Elliott also provides solid support as cameraman Larry, adding to the film's well-rounded cast.
Groundhog Day stands out not just for its unique premise but also for its rich character development and emotional resonance. Filled with memorable moments, sharp dialogue, and a seamless blend of comedy and drama, the film’s impact endures even 25 years after its release. It's a layered narrative of self-discovery cloaked in a comedic exterior, with standout performances and direction that have cemented its place as a cherished piece of contemporary cinema.

"Groundhog Day," directed by Harold Ramis and starring the inimitable Bill Murray alongside Andie MacDowell, continues to captivate audiences a quarter-century after its original release. This 4K UHD Blu-ray release from Sony is a sublime upgrade, enhancing the already timeless movie with contemporary audiovisual excellence. The 2160p/HDR picture enhancement delivers exceptional detail, vibrant colors, and improved contrast, providing a naturalistic and immersive visual experience. Meanwhile, the newly added Dolby Atmos track, while slightly exuberant, expands the surround field beautifully and complements the film’s playful yet poignant narrative.
Despite these audiovisual improvements, it is disappointing that the collection of bonus features remains unchanged from the 15th Anniversary Edition. This lack of new extras could deter some collectors who already possess previous releases. However, for those who have yet to own this comedy classic or are ready to experience it through UHD, this edition is an unequivocal upgrade. The blend of enhanced picture quality and enriched sound offers a fresh perspective on the film without compromising its nostalgic charm.
Conclusively, Groundhog Day hardly needs any introduction; the film is the very definition of high concept with a smart script, clever direction, and a perfectly cast Bill Murray. The movie has become a genuine classic that is both moving and extremely funny, whilst its structure, somewhat ironically, lends itself to repeat viewings. Part comic, part tragedy – all awesome. As an Ultra HD Blu-ray, the package from Sony is pretty good; the native 4K image is fantastic, being both well-detailed, bright, and naturalistic, with the sympathetic HDR pass bringing the colors to life and improving the image on every level. The disc also contains a Dolby Atmos track, which while a tad over the top does nevertheless really open up the surround field in all its natural elegance. It is such a shame, then, that the extras package is exactly the same as has already been released… unless that is the point!

PlotA cynical and self-centered weatherman from Pittsburgh, Phil, heads to Punxsutawney for the annual Groundhog Day festivities, accompanied by his producer, Rita, and cameraman, Larry. Despite his disdain for the event, Phil reports on the groundhog's ability to predict the length of winter. After the assignment, a blizzard that Phil himself had said would miss the area prevents the trio from returning to Pittsburgh, forcing them to stay another night in Punxsutawney. Phil awakes the next day to a peculiar and unsettling realization; it's Groundhog Day again, and he's reliving the same day repeatedly.
Trapped in what appears to be a never-ending temporal loop, Phil's initial confusion and panic give way to frustration when he finds himself unable to break the cycle. With each identical day, Phil indulges in reckless behavior, leverages his knowledge of the day's events for personal gain, and experiences bouts of hedonism and despair. Throughout these repetitions, he also grows closer to Rita, becoming increasingly charmed by her positive outlook and kind-hearted nature. As the same day plays out over and over again, Phil begins to contemplate the nature of his life, his relationships, and what it might take to move forward.
