"Stung" is presented on Blu-ray by IFC Midnight and Scream Factory with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer and a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The blend of practical effects over CGI lends excellent tangibility to the visuals, creating a film where fine details like bug hair and vivid gore elements are almost palpable. Close-ups reveal intricate makeup blemishes, intimate details of the wasps, and finely stitched costumes, enhancing immersion. The color grading introduces an unusual palette of orange-yellow and blue-green hues, primarily in both exterior and interior shots, which can feel eccentric but are artistically intentional rather than indicative of a compression issue.
The video quality is commendable given the film's low-budget origins. Despite limited instances where CGI appears soft, the overall detail remains sharp and defined. Background elements and shadow detail maintain clarity, even in darker scenes where low light can pose challenges. Blacks are deep and inky, providing ample shading without obscuring detail or causing crushing. Colors like reds, greens, and blues stand out with robust vibrancy, contributing significantly to the atmosphere. Skin tones remain consistently cold but are captured with impressive detail, documenting every subtle nuance from stubble to wrinkles.
Overall, "Stung" maintains a polished image that excels in detail, depth, and visual clarity. The practical effects work synergistically with the strong HD transfer to deliver a visually engaging experience, slightly marred only by minor issues with digital effects. This Blu-ray release effectively showcases the film’s creative implementation of practical effects, framing it within a visual presentation that is both immersive and technically proficient.

The audio presentation of the Blu-ray for "Stung" features a formidable lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, renowned for its immersive and aggressive nature. From the prelude where the subtle buzzing of wasps can be heard panning across channels, the soundtrack escalates dramatically as the narrative unfolds, particularly when a swarm of stinging insects emerges, saturating the soundscape with a powerful low-frequency throb. This mix maintains top-notch fidelity and an extremely wide dynamic range, ensuring that even the subtlest background noises, like distant buzzing, are discernible and contribute to the engulfing atmosphere.
The dynamics of this audio track are well-executed with a fine balance between dialogue, sound effects, and musical score. Each sound effect is meticulously layered and directional, offering an excellent surround sound experience where various elements seamlessly flow through the surround speakers. The strong bass presence, characterized by a rumbling LFE, enhances scenes involving swooping fly wings and crashing impacts without overwhelming the overall mix. Dialogue clarity remains impeccable throughout, devoid of any disruptive artifacts, ensuring it is always comprehensible amidst the cacophony of insect swarms.
In summary, the audio mix for "Stung" excels in delivering both an immersive and technically proficient auditory experience. The careful equilibrium between ambient noise, dynamic sound effects, and clear dialogue creates a high-impact horror atmosphere that fully encapsulates the viewer in the midst of an intense wasp attack. This DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix undoubtedly counts as one of the most standout elements of the Blu-ray release.

"Stung" is a thrilling throwback to classic giant insect horror films, reminiscent of works by Bert I. Gordon. The movie focuses on a chaotic garden party disrupted by mutant wasps, which transform a gathering into a frenzy of survival. The protagonists, Julia (Jessica Cook) and Paul (Matt O'Leary), two staffers at the event, must contend with the invasion while a budding romance emerges. Lance Henriksen makes a notable appearance, tangling with the oversized antagonists. Despite an initial slow pace filled with character establishment, the film ramps up, offering a blend of horror and comedy, though the latter often misses the mark and becomes snarky.
Director Benni Diez employs a background in visual effects to deliver surprisingly high-quality gore and practical bug effects on a modest budget. The wasp attacks are both gruesome and inventive, with scenes showcasing larvae bursting from hosts and stingers burrowing into flesh. The film creatively uses partial shots of wasps to heighten tension, a technique that might have benefited further from a 3D presentation. While the script lacks depth and occasionally drags, Diez’s skillful visual direction and effective use of CGI keep the audience engaged, blending seamlessly with practical effects to create a cohesive viewing experience.
Ultimately, "Stung" stands out for its visceral effects rather than its narrative or comedic prowess. The detailed and gooey visuals cater to gore aficionados, while its homage to older giant monster films adds nostalgic charm. Despite its shortcomings in humor and pacing, "Stung" provides sufficient entertainment value, making it a decent entry into the killer bug genre and a promising directorial debut for Benni Diez.
Total: 62
"Stung" is an enjoyable homage to the classic giant bug films of the 1950s, executed with a modern twist. The film is directed by Benni Diez, who shows promise with his effective use of practical effects that fans of the genre will appreciate. The horror-comedy blend often teeters, achieving remarkable success in scenes such as a flaming wasp attacking heroes in a food service van. Although the balance between horror and comedy isn't always perfectly maintained, the film offers enough engaging moments to keep viewers entertained.
The Blu-ray release of "Stung" ensures an excellent audio-visual experience. The video quality is crisp, and the audio is outstanding, creating an immersive atmosphere that enhances the viewing experience. Extras included in the Blu-ray package are a noteworthy addition, offering insights that fans will find valuable without overwhelming them.
In conclusion, "Stung" doesn't redefine the giant bug genre but stands out with its low-budget charm and thrilling moments. Those looking for modern creature features will find it entertaining, though it might be better suited for rental rather than purchase due to limited rewatch value.
