Despicable Me 3" shines in its Ultra HD presentation, offering viewers a noteworthy upgrade from the already impressive 1080p Blu-ray version. This 4K UHD rendition is sourced from a 2K DI, lovingly up-converted to 4K to maximize the digitally sourced imagery's potential. The enhanced resolution is immediately apparent in the characters' finer textures and the subtle elements of the physical environment, adding depth and detail that invite closer inspection. Although these improvements are modest, they contribute significantly to a more immersive viewing experience. The HDR-10 and Dolby Vision encoding amplifies this effect, with a broader color spectrum and dynamic range that inject life into the film's vibrant palette. Highlights such as minion yellow, Lucy’s blue dress, and the contrasting darks of Gru's attire display an enriched fidelity, making every frame pop with an intensity that exceeds typical CG animations.
The HEVC H.265 encoding on a BD-66 layer format ensures no detail is spared, especially in scenes bustling with activity or showcasing intricate textures like the fuzzy jackets or the sleek surfaces of Bratt's gadgets. The hues are more vivid and lifelike, thanks to HDR's color depth enhancement, making even the subtlest freckles on characters’ faces standout. Despite originating from a 2K digital intermediate, this UHD presentation exhibits an astonishing clarity in its depiction of the fictional world, from Freedonia's lush greenery to the neon-lit excitement of Bratt's lair. Ambient elements such as rain on the minions or gloss on surfaces highlight a realistic interaction with light, demonstrating the encoding’s prowess in delivering specular highlights and deep contrast without losing detail in shadows.
Moreover, the 4K upgrade pays attention to the preservation of film integrity while enhancing visual quality. A slight artificial grain suggests a commitment to maintaining the cinematic feel amidst the clarity brought by high-resolution formats. This choice may affect detail slightly on larger displays but generally does not detract from the overall excellence of the presentation. Blacks are deeper, enriching scenes with a level of sharpness and definition that further accentuates textural details, from clothing to environmental features, ensuring colors remain vibrant and saturated throughout. While minor compression artifacts are virtually unseen, ensuring a clean visual feast free from distractions. As it stands, "Despicable Me 3" sets a benchmark for animated films on UHD, combining faithful color reproduction with superior clarity and contrast to deliver a delightful viewing experience that complements its heartwarming narrative and comedic charm.

The DTS:X Master Audio soundtrack of "Despicable Me 3" on 4K UHD Blu-Ray skillfully combines clear, dynamic audio with an expansive soundstage that enhances the viewing experience. The audio mix is moderately active, utilizing a well-balanced mix of atmospherics, music, and discrete sound effects to create a tangible level of immersion. This is complemented by the precise placement of sound effects and a robust music presence, including a selection of '80s pop hits that are integrated seamlessly. While the track does not aggressively exploit the low-end frequencies or overhead channels to their full potential, moments of height involve atmospheric sounds and specific action sequences—like rockets and minions—that add a playful dimension to the soundscape.
Vocals are presented with exceptional clarity, ensuring dialogue is always front and center, despite the frenetic action sequences that showcase the soundtrack's ability to handle multiple audio elements with precision and clarity. The front-to-back pans in chase scenes are executed briskly and naturally, with the surround sound field adequately filled by instrumental and lyrical elements of the soundtrack. However, the bass response and utilization of surround channels could be perceived as conservative until certain set pieces demand greater impact.
In terms of technical audio capabilities, "Despicable Me 3" features both English DTS:X and DTS Headphone:X mixes, alongside Spanish 7.1 DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and French 5.1 DTS Digital Surround options. Dynamics across the board are lively, with a notable emphasis on musical sequences where instrumental details are both vibrant and articulate. Surround sound presentation is commendable, with Foley work precisely placed to match on-screen action, though some opportunities for more aggressive utilization of the mix's capabilities were missed. Overall, the audio presentation offers a solidly entertaining experience, with room-filling energy in its music and action sequences, even if it occasionally feels restrained in its exploration of the format's potential for immersion.

The "Despicable Me 3" 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation offers a substantial selection of extras primed to enhance the viewing experience of fans and newcomers alike. However, the highlight on the 4K disc is the exclusive mini-movie, "The Secret Life of Kyle," which showcases Gru's pet dog in a charming adventure, beautifully presented in 2160p/HDR quality, presumably with Dolby Vision enhancement. Though numerous meaningful supplements are seamlessly carried over to the Blu-ray disc, they range from a brief yet engaging deleted scene introduced by Dana Gaier, a handful of amusing Minion Moments, immersive character profiles, insightful behind-the-scenes featurettes including "The Making of Despicable Me 3" and "Developing Dru," to various interactive and promotional materials that expand the movie's universe. These extras collectively provide an enriching backstory and deeper understanding of both the characters and the fictional world, though not all are deemed essential viewing. The package is completed by an array of Minion-centric shorts and miscellaneous items like Minion mugshots and wanted posters, offering a comprehensive look at the film's creative process and its whimsical world.

Despicable Me 3," the third installment in the wildly popular franchise from Illumination, continues its lucrative blend of family dynamics, slapstick humor, and a colorful palette of characters, maintaining the series' stronghold in the animated comedy genre. In this sequel, Gru, voiced with a charming duality by Steve Carell, faces both a professional setback and a personal revelation when he meets his long-lost twin brother, Dru. As they navigate their newfound relationship, the film introduces new dynamics and challenges, especially with Balthazar Bratt, a villain stuck in the '80s played with delightful vigor by Trey Parker, adding a fresh yet nostalgically amusing antagonist to the mix. The movie adeptly balances action and humor, with Gru's adorable minions providing side-splitting moments that, although occasionally seem more like filler than substantial plot progression, never fail to entertain. Despite its success at keeping audiences engaged and laughing, some critics argue that the narrative relies heavily on formulaic elements and lacks deep educational value for children, veering towards being an extravagant merchandising vehicle rather than a meaningful cinematic experience.
Technical aspects aside, what truly stands out in "Despicable Me 3" is its visual presentation, especially in its 4K UHD Blu-ray incarnation. The animation is crisp, vibrant, and meticulously detailed, making full use of the 4K resolution to bring out the kaleidoscope of colors and textures that fill the Despicable Me universe. The joyous and sometimes chaotic energy of the film is captured beautifully, with every frame showcasing Illumination's commitment to quality. The voice performances are top-notch, with Carell's versatility shining through in his portrayal of both Gru and Dru, while Wiig provides a strong support as Lucy. While it may not innovate the franchise significantly or appeal to every viewer's taste for nostalgia and humor, "Despicable Me 3" firmly secures its place as a visual treat and a solid addition to the series, promising more mischievous adventures that fans have grown to love.

Despicable Me 3," the third entry in this beloved animated franchise, offers a mix of entertainment that resonates well across a broad audience, combining the charm and humor characteristic of its predecessors with freshly introduced elements. Although some critics argue it does not quite recapture the innovative spark of the original, it nonetheless delivers an enjoyable experience. This release shines on the 4K UHD Blu-ray platform, featuring remarkable video quality rendered in 2160p with Dolby Vision HDR, enhancing the visuals with vibrant colors and deep contrasts that are sure to captivate. Accompanying this stellar video presentation is an outstanding DTS:X soundtrack that enriches the viewing experience with immersive, crystal-clear audio. Fans and newcomers alike will find much to appreciate, including a substantial array of extras geared towards a younger audience, providing additional value and entertainment.
Despite some commentary on its conventional narrative and reliance on the franchise's established formula, "Despicable Me 3" manages to inject enough novelty through its character-driven story, underscored by underlying themes of family and belonging. It introduces a new villain who adds a fresh dynamic to the franchise's universe, contributing to a plot that, while familiar in its structure, remains engaging and humorously endearing. The overall package benefits significantly from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's commitment to quality, evident in both the film's audiovisual presentation and the curated selection of kid-friendly bonus content. This release is particularly recommended for series enthusiasts and 4K UHD collectors seeking to experience the movie in the best possible quality.
In conclusion, "Despicable Me 3" on 4K UHD Blu-ray stands out as a worthwhile addition to any home entertainment library, perfect for family movie nights. The technical prowess of its video and audio presentation elevates the film, ensuring that viewers are treated to a visually stunning and audibly delightful experience. Despite some narrative predictability, the movie's heartwarming messages and comedy make it a joyous watch. With its array of appealing special features and superior technical specifications, this release underscores the franchise's enduring appeal and Universal's dedication to high-quality home video experiences.

PlotGru, a former villain turned Anti-Villain League (AVL) agent, faces a new challenge when he is fired from the AVL. He and his wife Lucy fail to capture Balthazar Bratt, a former child star turned supervillain obsessed with the character he played in the '80s. Bratt manages to steal a very expensive diamond, which leads to Gru and Lucy's termination given their failure to apprehend him. Dejected, Gru struggles with the idea of going back to his villainous ways despite the temptation and urging from his Minions. In the midst of this crisis, Gru discovers he has a twin brother.
Gru meets his long-lost twin, Dru, who is blond, cheerful, and successful, with an enormous, lavish mansion and a private army of minions. Dru reveals their father was a legendary villain, and he wishes to continue the family legacy. He admires Gru's past as a villain and seeks his mentorship to learn the ways of villainy. Gru is initially reluctant but is persuaded by the prospect of using this opportunity to get back at Bratt for his earlier defeat and the loss of his job. Meanwhile, Lucy is finding her feet as a new mom to Gru's adopted daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, and Gru's Minions, longing for a return to villainy, find themselves on their own adventure.
