The Mermaid’s 1080p transfer is a visual feast with vivid details replicating facial features, rusted metal, and mermaid fins, while colors are rich and vibrant, ensuring dynamic screen presence. Presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the clarity and color reproduction are superb though slightly soft in zany visual effects.
Audio: 75
The Mermaid's Blu-ray features an exceptional DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack in both Chinese and English, leveraging full surround and subwoofer support. This mix delivers impressive depth, clear dialogue, and powerful sound effects, offering an immersive audio experience with balanced dynamics and excellent LFE.

Extras on 'The Mermaid' Blu-ray include a substantial making-of featurette covering set design, directing, 3D filming, and performing as a mermaid, along with a brief behind-the-scenes piece, and a music video; while the content is informative, it lacks the depth expected for such a successful film.

Stephen Chow's 'The Mermaid' merges romance, comedy, and bold visual effects into a wildly imaginative spectacle. Despite some jerky CGI and over-the-top antics, the film’s heart, inventive design, and enthusiastic performances create a uniquely entertaining experience, earning its status as China's highest-grossing film.

The Mermaid's 1080p transfer showcases exceptional image clarity and vivid detail, easily bringing the film's diverse environments to life. Whether in decaying tankers, opulent offices, or water-drenched zones, every element is meticulously captured. Facial textures, makeup effects, wrinkles, and even mermaid fins are vividly detailed, contributing to an immersive viewing experience. The level of detail in close-ups and wide shots alike is commendable, making the visual presentation practically reference-grade. Light, sporadic source noise is present but does not detract from the overall quality.
Colors are extremely rich and well-saturated, with primaries appearing robust and vibrant, creating an almost palpable presence on the screen. The varied and dynamic color palette underscores the film's unique aesthetic, pushing display capabilities to their limits. Black levels are consistently deep and inky, presenting no compression artifacts or significant video noise, enhancing the quality of the presentation further. Flesh tones are accurate and natural throughout.
In terms of technical specifications, the transfer utilizes MPEG-4 AVC encoding at a 1080p resolution with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. While the image occasionally softens during certain visual effects sequences, this does not substantially impact the overall depth and clarity of the film. The depth in wide shots and dynamic action sequences is especially notable, with well-defined characters against vibrant backdrops. Overall, this Blu-ray presentation offers a visually stunning and almost flawless experience.

The audio presentation of "The Mermaid" on Blu-ray is exceptional, featuring a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. Viewers have the option to enjoy the soundtrack in the original Chinese or an English dub, both of which deliver remarkable depth and liveliness. The tracks make full use of surround speakers, providing a broad musical spread with both elegant and aggressive clarity. Surround and subwoofer support integrate seamlessly, rendering the sound effects—from mermaid splashes and skateboard movements to impactful dialogue reverberation—with striking precision. High-action moments are particularly noteworthy, with gunfire and other intense effects creating a heavy surround presence, ensuring an immersive experience.
Sound effects, layered elegantly without overwhelming the listener, are a highlight. The sonic environment is meticulously designed, capturing every detail, from the rusted-out tankers to the dynamic aquatic scenes. The soundtrack manages to balance the film's serious and humorous tones effectively, enhancing tension and comedy without overshadowing other audio elements. Dialogue remains consistently clear and naturally placed in the center channel, although it occasionally disperses to other channels when needed for effect. The low-frequency extension (LFE) impresses, delivering a hefty bass that kicks in robustly during action scenes without distorting.
Overall, this DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix imbues "The Mermaid" with a comprehensive auditory landscape. The dynamic range is wide and the mix avoids any audio imperfections such as pops or hisses. Stephen Chow’s direction ensures the various channels are utilized with finesse, making the audio presentation engaging and fully immersive.

Stephen Chow's "The Mermaid" is an astonishing blend of genres, bursting forth with humor, romance, action, and explosive spectacle. The movie, which has become China's highest-grossing film of all time, showcases Chow's aptitude for combining chaos with heart, further emphasizing his reputation for crafting unique and wildly entertaining cinema. Liu Xuan (Chao Deng), a wealthy tycoon with a history of exploiting natural resources, inadvertently disrupts the habitat of a secret community of mermaids in Green Gulf. The mermaids task Shan (Yun Lin) with assassinating Xuan; however, her mission is complicated by an unexpected romantic entanglement.
Visually, "The Mermaid" is a triumph of vivid color palettes and creative designs, even if some special effects occasionally miss the mark. The film’s sheer inventiveness is its most compelling trait. Shan’s awkward attempts to blend into the human world bring humor and charm, while the supporting cast populates the narrative with energetic performances that embrace the fantastical elements wholeheartedly. Particularly notable are Chao Deng and Yun Lin's captivating chemistry, which underscores their characters' development from adversaries to lovers. Coupled with Chow's skilled direction, which balances whimsical chaos with poignant moments, the film delivers a dynamic viewing experience.
One of the myriad ways "The Mermaid" excels is through its deft use of visual gags and slapstick humor that feels both fresh and nostalgic. The movie cleverly juxtaposes human greed against ecological preservation, subtly weaving in a conservation message amid the comedic uproar. Despite its frenetic pace and outlandish scenarios, it retains an emotional core that resonates, ultimately focusing on love and redemption. This amalgam of absurdity and heart makes "The Mermaid" an unmissable film for those seeking truly original and rewarding cinema.

"The Mermaid" directed by Stephen Chow, is a visually captivating film that intertwines chaotic yet enlightening humor with a bold, colorful aesthetic. It stands out as a strong representation of Chow's unique cinematic style, delivering performances that are both strong and engaging. The Blu-ray release commendably preserves these qualities, offering excellent video and audio presentations that capture the film’s vibrant essence.
Sony’s Blu-ray release of "The Mermaid" is technically impressive, with stellar video quality that showcases the film’s remarkable production design. The audio presentation is equally engaging, enhancing the overall viewing experience with its crisp and dynamic sound. However, it's worth noting that the supplementary materials on this Blu-ray are somewhat brief considering the film’s expansive scope and popularity, particularly in China. This slightly diminishes the value of the package, although it still stands as an admirable release.
In conclusion, "The Mermaid" is not for all tastes, but its ambition is easily appreciated. It's big, colorful, and delightfully weird, with a contagious enthusiasm and charm characteristic of Stephen Chow’s works. Performances are excellent, direction is steady, and the production design is fantastic. Despite the brief supplements, the Blu-ray’s stellar video and engaging audio make it a recommended addition to any collection.
