'The Martian' 4K UHD Blu-ray with HDR10 and a strong HEVC H.265 encode offers vivid color and improved detail over standard Blu-ray, particularly in wide shots and shadow detail, though some note increased noise from the upscaled 2K DI. The Dolby Atmos audio elevates the experience with enhanced vertical elements.

The Martian's 4K UHD Blu-ray delivers an exceptional audio experience with its Dolby Atmos upgrade, enhancing the already stellar DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 foundation. The vertical channels shine during intense sequences like the dust storm and launch, while classic disco tracks sound vibrant. Dialogue is crisp and balanced, marking this as an audio standout.
Extra: 98
The 4K UHD Blu-ray of 'The Martian' enriches the experience with a comprehensive array of extras, including informative commentary by Ridley Scott, Drew Goddard, and Andy Weir, in-depth featurettes on writing, science, and production design, a documentary on NASA's Mars journey, and engaging faux mission videos, setting a new standard for bonus content.

The "The Martian" 4K UHD Extended Edition, with 10 additional minutes of footage and a Dolby Atmos sound mix, is a masterful blend of science and entertainment, showcasing Matt Damon's stellar performance as Mark Watney. Despite minor critiques on the new material's impact, the immersive visual effects and compelling narrative deliver a crowd-pleasing triumph for Ridley Scott.

The 4K UHD presentation of "The Martian" offers a visually compelling experience, featuring a vibrant HEVC H.265 encode and HDR10, although some uniformity in HDR standards could enhance the viewer's experience significantly. The film, displayed in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, distinguishes itself with sharp, colorful imagery that evokes a near-3D effect. These qualities are particularly evident in wide special effect shots and scenes with solar panels. The lush reds, blues, and greens contribute to an attractive visual palette that mirrors the striking detail and depth observed in high-end screenings such as those using Dolby Vision, albeit without the same superior black levels.
Despite its striking picture quality, the 4K transfer incorporates both 5K downscaled content and 2K upscaling, introducing some image noise and inconsistencies in black levels compared to other UHD releases. Notably, minor blemishes from the upscaling process can appear as gritty noise in certain scenes, particularly in interior sequences on the Hermes spacecraft. These issues are more prevalent than seen in the Blu-ray version, where shadow details are oftentimes more crushed. The Blu-ray, when upscaled, demonstrates excellent shadow detail though it lacks HDR's vibrancy.
"The Martian" benefits from a substantial 4K video presentation, maintaining brilliance and vibrant color detail throughout. However, users should be mindful of potential noise due to mixed source integration. Regardless of slight drawbacks in black level and noise consistency, this release presents a high-quality viewing option for showcasing Ultra HD technology capabilities. It serves as a useful benchmarking tool for calibrating display settings for optimal color fidelity and shadow detailing to enhance the cinematic experience.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "The Martian" delivers an outstanding audio presentation, making significant upgrades with its new Dolby Atmos mixes available on both the theatrical and extended cuts. The previous DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix was already impressive, but the Atmos track adds an unparalleled level of immersion by leveraging vertical channels to enhance sonic details. Particularly during the electrifying storm and launch sequences, sound elements such as Martian breezes and atmospheric pressure shifts are placed overhead, enriching the atmospheric experience and providing a dynamic soundstage that envelops the listener. The LFE is robust, complementing the high-frequency details, maintaining a crystal-clear fidelity throughout.
The Atmos upgrade is transformative, allowing a more comprehensive auditory experience even amid quieter or dialogue-driven moments. Dialogue clarity remains impeccable, with Matt Damon’s vocal narration maintaining a clear and dominant presence within the mix. The integration of background disco tunes, like Commander's amusing selections, culminates with beautifully rendered tracks such as “Starman” by David Bowie. These classic tracks achieve a newfound richness, resonating deeply thanks to the expertly mixed soundtrack that spans evenly across all audio channels.
Overall, this release exemplifies elite audio prowess, with seamless separation and robust surround cues that heighten both isolation and intensity during action scenes. The track also includes a variety of language and subtitle options, featuring descriptive English audio for those requiring additional accessibility. Accompanied by an insightful audio commentary from director Ridley Scott and others, the release provides both technical excellence and a rewarding auditory journey, solidifying "The Martian" as a benchmark for audio presentation in home media formats.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "The Martian," directed by Ridley Scott, offers an engrossing visual and auditory experience with its Enhanced Edition. Though the additional ten minutes of footage primarily consist of minor expansions—such as extra dialogue or establishing shots—it serves to enhance the narrative without drastically altering the film’s original impact. The inclusion of an Atmos sound mix significantly bolsters auditory immersion, highlighting Hans Zimmer's score and the atmospheric sound design that accentuates the desolate Martian landscape and adds depth to action sequences. While the extended version adds only modestly to the storytelling, it capitalizes on the intricate blend of science and survival woven throughout the plot, driven by Matt Damon's exemplary performance as astronaut Mark Watney.
The film adeptly balances technical accuracy with dramatic flair, narrating Watney’s unexpected survival after a dust storm forces his crew to abandon him on Mars. Damon's portrayal is both intellectually adept and characterized by an irreverent humor that brings levity to Watney’s dire situation, a testament to both the screenwriting by Drew Goddard and Damon's skillful acting. Supporting performances by Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are equally compelling, reinforcing the engaging dynamics between NASA's efforts on Earth and Watney's survival tactics on Mars.
In this release, additional insights are provided through a host of supplementary materials, including a documentary exploring the scientific processes behind Mars' recreation for the film, along with commentaries from NASA specialists. This blend of compelling human storytelling and factual scientific exploration makes "The Martian" an intellectual feast that remains grounded in authenticity. Despite slightly Hollywood-esque ending scenarios, "The Martian" retains its standing as a leading cinematic portrayal of perseverance against cosmic adversity, praised for its accurate depiction of technology and resilient optimism.

PlotA crew of astronauts on the Ares III mission to Mars is forced to evacuate their landing site in Acidalia Planitia due to an intense sandstorm. During the evacuation, botanist and engineer Mark Watney is struck by debris and lost in the storm. The crew, unable to locate him and believing him to be dead due to his suit's biomonitor being damaged, makes the difficult decision to leave the planet to preserve their own lives. However, Watney survives the storm and regains consciousness to find himself alone on the hostile surface of Mars, with no way to communicate with Earth.
Watney, using his ingenuity and resourcefulness, sets out to survive on the limited supplies left at the Hab, the Mars base, until the next scheduled Mars mission lands in four years. Knowing that he must ration his food, he creates a makeshift farm inside the Hab using Mars soil fertilized with human waste and water produced by burning hydrogen from leftover rocket fuel. Watney modifies the habitat's equipment to generate water and begins growing potatoes, stretching his food supply. Meanwhile, he scavenges parts from previous missions to rebuild his communication equipment. Back on Earth, NASA discovers that Watney is alive and engineers a daring and risky plan to rescue him, even as the world eagerly watches the fight for survival unfolding millions of miles away.
