Inglourious Basterds' 4K UHD presentation showcases an impressive, though occasional, upscaled quality, benefiting significantly from HDR10+ and a wider color gamut. Enhancements include vibrant skin tones, deeper shadows, and refined detail in close-ups, although it lacks the consistent wow factor due to reliance on a 2K DI upscale.

Inglourious Basterds on 4K UHD doesn't upgrade to Dolby Atmos but retains its robust DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, acclaimed for dynamic immersion with crisp dialogue, bombastic effects, and precise soundstage. Despite its age, the mix remains a high-caliber, detail-rich audio experience.
Extra: 74
Universal's 4K release of "Inglourious Basterds" impresses with a comprehensive suite of extras, retaining content from the 2009 Blu-ray and adding a new 1-hour "New York Times Talk" with Tarantino. Highlights include a Roundtable Discussion, Featurettes, and a Poster Gallery Tour, all in HD, offering an engaging deep dive into the film’s context and influences.

The 4K UHD release of Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" elevates his audacious WWII revenge fantasy with 2160p/HDR visuals, an enhanced surround sound experience, and retains the rich dialogue, suspenseful tension, and creative narrative that solidify its position as a Tarantino masterwork.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation of "Inglourious Basterds," offered by Universal, delivers a complex audiovisual experience that meticulously highlights the film’s period aesthetics and directorial intent. Despite being sourced from a 2K Digital Intermediate, the upscaling to 4K still provides a notable enhancement over the original Blu-ray release. Encompassing a 3840x2160 resolution, the film is encoded in HEVC/H.265 and supports both HDR10 and HDR10+, which significantly elevates the dynamic range and color vibrancy. The application of HDR is particularly striking, offering improved black levels and more nuanced contrast, ensuring deep and vibrant visuals. The nuanced HDR grading allows for various colors, such as red Nazi sashes and blood, to be vividly displayed, thus enhancing the film's visual storytelling. Wide shots may reveal some limitations due to the upscale process, with occasional softness and aliasing, but close-ups achieve impressive sharpness with refined details down to facial textures and environment intricacies.
The authenticity of the 35mm photochemical film is preserved through the presentation's retention of a robust and healthy grain structure, reinforcing the film's cinematic integrity. The detail capture in both close-up facial shots and broader landscapes demonstrates an improvement in detail resolution over standard Blu-ray capabilities, despite some constraints posed by the 2K DI origins. While subtle pixelation and minor chroma noise are observable in some scenes, they are ultimately inconspicuous to most viewers.
Universal’s decision to leverage an existing 2K master instead of undertaking a native 4K rescan is somewhat controversial within technical circles, yet the UHD transfer still impressively showcases enhanced color depth and detail clarity. Skin tones appear lifelike and stable throughout, with no color distortion. While this isn't a flawless demonstration-grade disc—limitations inherent in its shared production roots do emerge—the overall presentation is notably superior to previous HD editions, providing an elevated visual depth that significantly enhances the viewing experience for enthusiasts of Tarantino's work.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray of "Inglourious Basterds" delivers an impressive audio experience with its DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, maintaining the same quality found on the original Blu-ray. While some may expect an upgrade to Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, the existing mix remains formidable, enveloping listeners in an immersive soundscape. Dialogue is rendered with perfect clarity across the front channels, providing a distinct and clear audio element vital for a dialogue-heavy film, particularly considering the multilingual narrative requiring precise enunciation.
The soundtrack makes excellent use of the surround platform, with effects being intricately placed to achieve both bombastic and subtly nuanced auditory experiences. The low-frequency effects are potent and dynamic: gunshots reverberate with authority, explosions deliver a satisfying bass impact, and the finale's inferno sequences fill the sound field with a rich, enveloping presence. The audio mix is meticulous in its layering, using every available channel to create an atmosphere that is detailed yet coherent, anchoring both action and tension-filled narrative moments.
This DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix shows a masterful balance between ambient sounds and vocal clarity, creating a lifelike auditory setting. Though lacking an object-based upgrade, the encompassing surround dynamics ensure a vivid and powerful listening experience. Subtle atmospheric details, such as creaking floorboards and chinking glasses, are highlighted within the soundstage, ensuring every scene is audibly alive. This sound mix not only accompanies the film's tense narrative but significantly enhances its emotional and dramatic weight, proving that even without the latest technology, it remains an audio powerhouse.
Extras: 74
Universal's 4K UHD release of "Inglourious Basterds" thoughtfully ports over the majority of the extras from the original Blu-ray, while introducing a valuable new discussion featuring Quentin Tarantino and The New York Times. The supplementary materials are diverse, featuring deleted scenes, multiple interviews, and a deep dive into "Nation’s Pride," a film-within-a-film project. Notably, The Roundtable Discussion with Tarantino, Brad Pitt, and Elvis Mitchell provides rich insights, while the exclusion of interactive features like D-Box merely highlights Universal's focus on content quality over gimmicks. Additionally, The New York Times Talk, originally a Best Buy exclusive, now enriches this edition. Integrating these extras on the 4K disc consolidates the collection's appeal, ensuring fidelity to content without necessitating the use of the accompanying Blu-ray.

"Inglourious Basterds" marks a pivotal moment in Quentin Tarantino's career, coupling his signature storytelling with a bold budget and larger-than-life WWII narrative. The film, a critical and commercial success, showcases Tarantino's ability to weave intricate plots with witty, tension-laden dialogue. Christoph Waltz, in his Oscar-winning performance as Colonel Hans Landa, epitomizes the terrifying charm of Tarantino's villains. Landa’s methodical and multilingual approach to manipulation is both unsettling and brilliant, serving as a linchpin for the film’s suspenseful narrative. Brad Pitt, as Lieutenant Aldo Raine, lights up the screen alongside Diane Kruger and Mélanie Laurent, whose roles further elevate the sprawling ensemble cast. Notably, "Inglourious Basterds" intelligently plays with language as a narrative tool, creating a multilayered story steeped in cultural idiosyncrasies.
Tarantino’s masterful subversion of cinematic norms is evident in his unconventional blending of genres. The film distinguishes itself by transcending standard classifications—it's simultaneously a gripping thriller and a darkly humorous war film. Its anthology-like structure lends itself to a collection of meticulously crafted vignettes, each layered with suspense and wit. The memorable opening scene, involving Landa’s gripping interrogation across a French farm table, exemplifies Tarantino's command over dialogue-driven tension. Despite earlier skepticism regarding its pacing and tonal shifts, repeated viewings reveal the film's intricacies and synergy between its diverse storylines.
The 4K UHD Blu-Ray release enhances "Inglourious Basterds" with 2160p/HDR video quality, retaining the legacy 5.1 lossless soundtrack. The upgrade accentuates the film's visceral imagery and auditory experience, further highlighting its status in Tarantino's oeuvre. As a historical fantasy that dares to rewrite the past with audacity and finesse, "Inglourious Basterds" remains an essential viewing experience that merits appreciation for its innovation within the canon of war films.

Universal Studios' 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Inglourious Basterds" presents Quentin Tarantino’s audacious and thrilling historical rewrite in enhanced visual splendor. The new 2160p HDR10 presentation significantly outshines the previous Blu-ray edition, offering improved color depth and textural precision that bolsters the film's visual storytelling. While no new soundtrack upgrade is featured, the retained DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 remains robust and impactful. The package also includes a valuable new interview, adding a fresh supplement to an already solid collection of extras.
Despite the lack of a newly remastered audio track or extensive new features, the disc's image quality alone makes a compelling case for the upgrade, particularly for perfectionist collectors and Tarantino aficionados. The film’s updated appearance underlines its riveting narrative and grand cinematographic exploits, maintaining its tension-filled fun and unique place within Tarantino’s oeuvre. Still, some may find the absence of an immersive audio mix a slight limitation in what could have been an ultimate representation.
Ultimately, this release is highly recommended for both devoted fans and newcomers wishing to experience one of Tarantino's celebrated works at its visual best. While the enhancements are incremental in nature, they collectively provide a worthwhile improvement in viewing quality. This release solidifies "Inglourious Basterds" as an essential entry in any cinema lover’s collection, ensuring the film's rich tales and bold iconography are appreciated with crisp clarity and backed by solid audio fidelity.

PlotDuring the German occupation of France in World War II, Lieutenant Aldo Raine assembles a special team of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds." Their mission is simple: to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds' exploits eventually lead them to team up with a British Royal Marine officer on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Their plan involves attending a film premiere in Paris, where the Nazi top brass will be in attendance.
Meanwhile, Shosanna Dreyfus, a Jewish woman who narrowly escaped execution at the hands of Colonel Hans Landa, also known as "The Jew Hunter," runs a cinema in Paris. She has her own personal vendetta against the Nazis. When her cinema is chosen to host the premiere of a propoganda film starring German war hero Frederick Zoller, she sees an opportunity for revenge. Unbeknownst to her, her plot intersects with the Basterds' plans, setting the stage for a violent and dramatic convergence of fates at the movie premiere.
