"The Mask of Zorro" makes an impressive appearance on Blu-ray, delivered with a Region free 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer, which preserves its original cinematic 2.40:1 widescreen aspect ratio. The transfer provides viewers with a visually rich experience, boasting vivid and lustrous colors that enhance the grandiosity of the film's visual appeal. The depth of black levels impresses, rendering dynamic, deep blacks alongside gradational satisfaction, particularly in the darker, shadowy scenes. Despite minor occurrences of softness in close-up shots, potentially attributed to in-camera filtering, the overall sharpness remains unaffected, steering clear of excessive digital manipulation. Grain is present but finely maintained, reinforcing the film's filmic integrity without detracting from its detail-rich presentation.
Detail in both foreground and background elements is remarkably well-handled, showcasing intricate textures in costumes and Spanish architecture with exceptional clarity. The color palette, comprising both flamboyant primaries and rich secondary hues, brings the period clothing and vast landscapes to life, with skin tones presented naturally, albeit with a slightly pinkish tint. The embroidered details and descriptively intricate designs of the costumes receive particular attention, enhancing the visual storytelling with tonal variation and finesse.
Long shots emphasize the Blu-ray's capability to render detailed landscapes and vast vistas with defined clarity, offering viewers an almost two-dimensional quality that adds to the immersive experience. Interior scenes, whether set in warmer earth-toned locations or the murkier confines of Zorro's lair, maintain consistent detail and color accuracy. This Blu-ray edition of "The Mask of Zorro" not only marks a significant upgrade from its standard definition predecessor but also stands as a testament to the care invested in preserving the film's cinematic grandeur for home viewing.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack of "The Mask of Zorro" on Blu-ray presents a captivating audio experience that greatly surpasses its DVD counterpart, offering an aggressive and aurally engaging sound design. From the onset, its immersive quality is unmistakable; whether it's the initial footsteps of Zorro, the echo of his sword, or the vibrant energy of Flamenco rhythms, the mix envelopes listeners in a rich soundstage. The opening sequence alone is an auditory feast, emphasizing the detailed ambience of a cheering crowd, the sharpness of clashing swords, and the thunderous impact of gunshots, all maintained with startling clarity throughout the film. This meticulously crafted audio presentation supports every scene with depth and dynamism, allowing for an enriching surround experience that balances beautifully orchestrated music, potent dynamics, and high-level sonic detail.
Vocals are crystal clear, ensuring that dialogue cuts through the bustling background without losing any integrity, a testament to the soundtrack's exceptional clarity and room penetration. James Horner’s musical score is given ample weight and depth, further enhancing the listening experience with its expansive front soundstage that boasts a broad and sharply rendered higher frequency range. The soundtrack leverages every speaker to produce discrete effects and an engrossing soundscape, from ambient noises like chirping birds and gently rolling waters to the robust clanking of swords and the explosive action sequences. It's a demonstration of refined sound mixing that showcases room-filling dynamics without ever overpowering or diminishing the film's intricate auditory nuances.
While the lossless audio track stands out for its technical prowess and enveloping nature, there's a note on accessibility related to the presentation of subtitles for Spanish dialogue within the film. These subtitles extend beyond the image frame, potentially complicating viewing experiences on Constant Image Height projection screens. Despite this, "The Mask of Zorro" shines as a thrilling auditory experience on Blu-ray, underpinned by a DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack that envelops and engages with its lively, detailed, and thoroughly balanced mix.

The addition of the music video for "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" by Marc Anthony and Tina Arena adds a musical layer to the extras. A sneak peek into "The Legend of Zorro" and an exclusive scene from the sequel keep anticipation high for what's next. The inclusion of Sony's MovieIQ feature enhances the viewing experience with live, in-depth information about the film's details, accessible via BD-Live.
