Plane" presents a remarkably impressive 4K UHD Blu-ray experience, blending a 2160p resolution with an aspect ratio of 2.39:1, courtesy of Lionsgate Films. Despite the debates surrounding its digital cinematography, this Ultra HD rendering showcases a deliberate aesthetic choice, favoring a cooler, blue and green-tinged palette amidst an otherwise tropical ambiance. Whether it stems from an original 4K digital intermediate (DI) is uncertain, yet the presence of the Arri logo in the closing credits subtly nods to high-quality production standards. Detail retention across the board is commendable, with enhanced shadow details observed in darker sequences—elevated by HDR and/or Dolby Vision technologies. Although some argue the picture may occasionally appear flat due to its 2K finish assumptions, such instances are few and far between.
The color grading distinguishes itself as a defining feature of this Ultra HD presentation. Inside the aircraft, cool shades prevail, transitioning to vibrant tropical hues once on the ground. This dichotomy not only enriches visual appeal but also underscores narrative shifts. The Dolby Vision implementation intensifies these colors, emphasizing lush greens and stark contrasts without significant evidence of crush or murky shadows. Details are sharply captured; close-ups reveal nuanced textures, such as facial features and environmental intricacies, adding a layer of authenticity to the visual effects.
Despite some criticisms regarding digital grain and potential flatness in texture, "Plane" shines in its 4K UHD version. It boasts notable improvements in color vibrancy and detail clarity over its 1080p counterpart. The addition of digital grain, while noticeable, contributes to a filmic quality against brighter scenes, ensuring that "Plane" retains its cinematic essence. Overall, this presentation strikes a balance between maintaining natural skin tones and showcasing the expansive depth and detail of both interior and exotic exterior locales, making for a visually compelling experience that extends beyond the confines of high-definition expectations.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray of "Plane" boasts an audio presentation that's nothing short of remarkable, especially with its Dolby Atmos track that takes full advantage of the format to deliver a rich and immersive sonic experience. From the onset, ambient noise from the hustle and bustle of an airport sets the stage, transitioning smoothly into the subtle sounds of the aircraft taking off. However, it's when the plane hits a storm that the audio truly demonstrates its prowess. The Atmos mix creates an enveloping atmosphere with thunder roaring, rain pattering against the cockpit windows, and the chaos of the storm engaging all channels effectively, providing not only a thrilling auditory experience but also showcasing the technical capabilities of the sound design with well-balanced bass and crisp dialogue.
Throughout the film, particularly in scenes of turmoil and action post-crash landing in a jungle environment, the surround channels remain actively engaged. Here, ambient sounds of the jungle, together with the meticulously placed sound effects of gunfire and hand-to-hand combat, create a vividly immersive soundscape. Special attention to detail in tracking movements across the speakers adds to the realism, with sniper rifle shots and the clatter of debris flying through the air demonstrating outstanding use of the height channels and subwoofer, adding depth to explosions and enhancing the overall viewing experience without sacrificing clarity in dialogue.
Furthermore, the audio track extends its excellence beyond effects and ambiance to include a nuanced score that heightens suspense and emotional beats of the film. The bass maintains a tight control without overextension into distortion, ensuring music cues complement rather than compete with onscreen action. Subtitles in English SDH, French, and Spanish cater to diverse audiences while maintaining the audio's clarity and richness. The layering and dynamics of the Dolby Atmos track not only add dimensionality to "Plane" but also solidify its audio presentation as a benchmark for how action films should sonically perform in home entertainment systems.
Extras: 59
The "Plane" 4K UHD Blu-ray offers a modest yet intriguing collection of extras that provide a solid glimpse behind the scenes, despite being termed by some as straightforward Electronic Press Kit (EPK) material. The extras are consistent across both the 4K and 1080p discs, featuring engaging interviews with the cast and crew, particularly spotlighting Gerard Butler's involvement and dedication, detailed insights into the costume design process under the title "Plane Clothes," and a deeper look into the action sequences, notably the challenging plane landing scene in "Brace for Turbulence." Although some may find these offerings somewhat generic, the approximately 45 minutes of bonus content, including a theatrical trailer, will be a treat for fans interested in the filmmaking aspects and the subtle intricacies of production. A digital copy and a slipcover are also part of the package, enhancing the overall value.
Extras included in this disc:
- This Is Your Captain: Cast and crew discussions on working with Gerard Butler.
- Plane Clothes: Insight into costume design.
- Brace for Turbulence: Behind-the-scenes look at action sequences.

In the gripping action thriller "Plane," Gerard Butler stars as Brodie Torrance, a seasoned pilot who executes an emergency landing on a remote war-torn island following a lightning strike, setting the stage for a relentless survival saga. The plot thickens when the passengers become hostages of a hostile militia, compelling Torrance to form an unlikely alliance with Louis Gaspare, portrayed by Mike Colter, a convict in transit for a murder charge. This film skillfully blends elements of disaster and buddy-action genres, introducing a dynamic between Torrance and Gaspare that evolves from mere circumstance to a deeper mutual reliance. Through this partnership, both characters reveal hidden depths and capabilities, heightening the narrative’s tension and engagement.
"Plane" distinguishes itself by not shying away from the grittier and darker aspects of survival against guerilla adversaries, sustainably weaving gripping action with moments of human resilience and tactical ingenuity. Director Jean-François Richet, known for his adept handling of suspense and violence, crafts sequences laden with palpable tension and visceral confrontations that captivate the audience, further empowered by Butler and Colter's compelling performances. The film's premise, while straightforward, surprises with its execution, balancing intense action with strategic depth, making each encounter with the antagonists charged with uncertainty and high stakes.
The movie does more than entertain; it explores themes of leadership under duress, the unpredictability of human nature in crisis, and the blurred lines between morality and survival. "Plane" transcends its seemingly generic title and premise, delivering a tightly-paced narrative imbued with enough character development, suspense, and action to keep audiences invested—underscored by sharp cinematography and a gritty performance from Butler. Despite its moments bordering on the preposterous, the film maintains a steadfast commitment to its core narrative thrust—survival against odds—cementing itself as a commendable addition to the action genre that rejuvenates classic tropes with vigor and precision.

Plane," while diving into the action genre with a conventional plot and straightforward storytelling, manages to entertain and thrill, championed by strong performances and moments of gripping suspense. Released by Lionsgate Home Entertainment, this Ultra HD Blu-ray/Blu-ray/Digital Combo Pack carries the film with commendable technical prowess. The video quality is consistently good across the board, showcasing an impressive 4K with Dolby Vision presentation that makes its action-packed scenes and vibrant locales pop. Audio-wise, the package delivers an engaging surround sound experience, bolstered by a fair Dolby Atmos track which adds depth and intensity to the film's dynamic score and varied soundscapes. However, the bonus content, while slightly above average compared to similar releases, leaves room for more substantial extras that could have delved deeper into the making and conceptualization of the film.
Despite its formulaic approach and moments that stretch believability, "Plane" proves to be a competent action thriller. It thrives on its ability to engage viewers with well-orchestrated sequences and solid lead performances, which elevate the film beyond its generic premise. The technical merits of the 4K UHD release are solid, with both video and audio presentations receiving commendable attention to detail, ensuring an immersive viewing experience. Although the supplemental package is not as rich or extensive, what is included is enjoyable and enhances the overall appreciation of the film.
In conclusion, "Plane" on 4K UHD Blu-ray stands out as an entertaining, though unsurprising, addition to the action genre. Its technical presentation shines, making it a worthwhile pick for fans of high-octane cinema and those looking for a visually and auditorily pleasing home theater experience. Despite its predictable narrative and lackluster extras, the film’s charm, combined with top-notch visual and audio quality, makes it a recommended purchase for those waiting for a sale or a meaningful addition to their collection.
