Disney's 4K UHD release of "Hocus Pocus" presents an interesting case for fans and newcomers alike with its HDR-enhanced visual presentation that noticeably darkens the picture compared to the standard Blu-ray version. This increased darkness, while in line with the film’s thematic elements, results in scenes such as the opening flyover and classroom settings appearing significantly darker, almost as if taking place at different times of day. However, this effect is somewhat mitigated in exterior daylight scenes, where the HDR enhancement allows the fall colors to burst forth with exceptional vibrancy. The natural palette is enriched with deeper shades of oranges, browns, purples, and Halloween greens, although overall brightness and primary colors are subdued. Deep, inky black levels add to the atmosphere, especially in darker, spookier sequences, ensuring shadows and low-light details are more pronounced and effective.
Detail resolution benefits markedly from the 2160p transfer, showcasing sharper image quality, more distinct facial features, and textures in clothing and environments. The fine grain structure preserved in this transfer maintains the film's cinematic feel without overwhelming the picture. Despite some challenges with digital effects, notably the CG cat and magic spells, which betray their age in contrast to the otherwise pristine upgrade, the majority of visual effects and practical makeup details remain impressively discernible. This fidelity extends to the captivating realism of Salem's locale, from the roughness of old to the efficient smoothness of new settings within the story’s universe.
The 4K UHD disc of "Hocus Pocus," grounded in a clean 4K master, enhances textural details from close-ups to wide shots with a consistent sharpness that breathes new life into this beloved classic. While some may find the darker rendition of the film a personal preference point, it's an undeniably striking presentation that leans into moodier aesthetics without sacrificing clarity or depth. Natural skin tones persevere despite the darker bent, ensuring characters remain grounded and relatable amidst the vibrant supernatural spectacle. Although this rendition may diverge from previous releases in terms of luminosity and color boldness, it represents a meticulously crafted visual update that respects the source material while embracing the potential of modern home theater technologies.
Audio: 59
The audio presentation of the 4K UHD Blu Ray for "Hocus Pocus" retains the original DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack, foregoing the opportunity to remix in Dolby Atmos or DTS:X formats. This decision maintains the integrity of the film's original auditory experience without making the leap to more immersive, multidimensional soundscapes offered by newer audio technologies. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, while not pushing the boundaries of dynamic range or bass depth, presents a competent and balanced audio experience. Key moments, such as the thunderous collapse of a steel kiln door or the subtle rumble heralding the entrance of a resuscitated zombie, are delivered with precision, albeit without reaching extreme auditory depths.
The score intermittently injects a layer of energy, its presence notable yet restrained, contributing to the film's ambiance without overpowering it. Discrete channels are judiciously employed to create a more encompassing auditory environment, enhancing scenes with directional effects such as witches traversing the sky on their brooms or ambient sounds like wind swirling through the soundstage. Such elements work effectively within the constraints of the 5.1 configuration to envelope the listener, crafting an engaging albeit not groundbreaking sonic field.
In opting not to incorporate a Dolby Atmos or an expanded 7.1 soundtrack, Disney has chosen consistency over innovation for this release of "Hocus Pocus." While this may disappoint aficionados yearning for a fully immersive overhead sonic assault—envisioning lightning strikes and witches' cackles descending from above—the existing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix still succeeds in delivering a solid and faithful audio representation of this beloved cinematic work. Its deliberate use of discrete channels and detailed sound design ensures that, despite technological limitations, the auditory experience remains vibrant and engaging.
Extras: 57
The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Hocus Pocus" may not feature any extras on the 4K disc itself, but it compensates by including a Blu-ray disc filled with engaging supplementary content, identical to Disney's 25th Anniversary edition from 2018. Enthusiasts of the film will appreciate the "We ❤️ Hocus Pocus: Trivia and Treats Edition" for its in-depth, picture-in-picture experience that covers a wide range of materials from trivia, concept art, behind-the-scenes footage, to extensive interviews and deleted scenes, providing an immersive viewing experience. Additionally, the package offers a "Original Production Featurette," a concise yet informative look at the making of the film that covers everything from the storyline to the special effects employed. This release also provides a Movies Anywhere digital copy code and comes with an embossed slipcover, adding value for collectors. Despite the lack of extras on the 4K disc, the inclusion of these features on the Blu-ray makes it a worthwhile purchase for fans.
Extras included in this disc:
- We Heart Hocus Pocus: Trivia and Treats Edition: An immersive Play-The-Movie feature with picture-in-picture pop-ups offering interviews, trivia, deleted scenes, storyboards, video clips, and more.
- Original Production Featurette: A brief look at the making of the film, covering aspects such as the story, cast, and special effects.

Disney's enchanting 1993 classic, "Hocus Pocus," directed by Kenny Ortega, has been brought to the forefront of modern home cinema with its release on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format. This version boasts a stunning 2160p/HDR video output, bringing out the vivid colors and darker tones of Salem's witchcraft-filled world with striking contrast and detail. However, it retains the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack from previous Blu-ray editions, leaving the audio experience unchanged but still impressively clear and atmospheric. The 25th-anniversary Blu-ray bundle includes extras not found on the UHD disc itself, offering a slight nod towards collector’s interest in supplements to the cinematic experience.
Set amidst the ghastly backdrop of the Salem witch trials, "Hocus Pocus" transforms historical grimness into a colorfully enchanting tale. It adeptly mixes old horror staples with early '90s flair, involving children in a desperate bid to save their town from delightfully campy yet clever witches, portrayed irresistibly by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. Their performances elevate the movie, turning what could have been standard villains into fascinating protagonists navigating the modern world with a mix of wonder and wickedness. The subtle blend of morbid humor, societal commentary, and sexual undertones adds layers to the film, rendering it a smart yet soft offering in Disney’s catalogue that appeals across ages.
Despite its initial lukewarm reception and odd summer release back in 1993, "Hocus Pocus" has endured as a cult phenomenon. Its resurgence is a testament to its unique charm and the enduring appeal of its leading trio. The film’s leap to 4K UHD celebrates its iconic status, ensuring that both new and returning audiences can experience Salem’s witchery with never-before-seen visual clarity. This release not only highlights Disney's willingness to explore darker themes under a family-friendly banner but also reaffirms the film's place as a beloved Halloween staple that continues to enchant and entertain.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Hocus Pocus" impressively showcases the film's vibrant allure, thanks to its enhanced resolution and HDR grading. This upgrade vividly accentuates the movie's unique blend of horror and comedy, making the witches—arguably the film's most charismatic villains—even more engaging to watch. While the darker image presentation might test some viewers' preferences, it undeniably brings out the intricacies and depth of the film's visual effects and cinematography, lending a fresh aesthetic to this beloved classic. It's noteworthy, however, that the audio offering remains unchanged with the carryover of the DTS-HD 5.1 audio mix. While satisfactory, an update here could have further enriched the immersive experience.
Despite these advancements in visual quality, the package somewhat falters when it comes to additional content. The lack of new extras might leave fans wanting, especially those looking for deeper insights into the film's creation and legacy. Nevertheless, this release remains a compelling upgrade from its Blu-ray predecessor, offering both collectors and new fans alike a superior viewing experience. The inclusion of previous extras does add some value, but a missed opportunity lies in enhancing the package with more exclusive content, particularly considering the enduring popularity and influence of "Hocus Pocus".
In conclusion, this 4K UHD release of "Hocus Pocus" is a testament to the movie's lasting appeal, presenting it in a quality that befits its cult status. While it delivers significantly on visual enhancement, its audio aspects and special features may leave some room for desire. Despite these minor setbacks, it's certainly recommended for those looking to experience the film in its most visually compelling form yet. Collectors will also appreciate the availability of a SteelBook packaging variant, adding a tangible piece of memorabilia to their collection.
