Shout! Factory’s 4K UHD Blu-ray of 'The Message' offers a vastly superior presentation compared to previous releases, with a bold and vibrant 2160p transfer, enhanced HDR, minimal print defects, and a high video bitrate averaging 63.0 Mbps for the English version. The restoration eliminates past issues and beautifully reflects the film’s sunny shooting conditions.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray of 'The Message' offers both English and Arabic DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Surround and 2.0 Stereo tracks, with notable improvements over previous versions. The 5.1 mix delivers a more natural sound for dialogue, while the 2.0 track features pronounced reverb and richer depth.
Extra: 66
Shout's 4K UHD Blu-ray of 'The Message' is packed with valuable extras including multiple commentaries by producer/director Moustapha Akkad, behind-the-scenes documentaries, and promotional clips. The restoration featurette is insightful but brief, while trailers offer a nostalgic yet unrefined look at the film's promotional history.

The Message's 4K UHD Blu Ray edition delivers an impressive audiovisual upgrade with enhanced detail and color fidelity, providing a superior viewing experience compared to its previous BD-50 release.
Video: 83
Shout! Factory's release of "The Message" presents a significant upgrade in video quality compared to previous transfers. The 4K Ultra HD (BD-100) and Blu-ray (BD-50) discs offer the English version, while the third disc (BD-50) contains the longer Arabic version. Filmed in Panavision with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 by Director of Photography Jack Hildyard, the movie’s visual presentation has undergone a substantial restoration. The previously critiqued AB transfer, which was cropped to 1.78:1 and presented in 1080i, resulted in an uninspired and dull image, marred by speckles, edge halos, and noise. These issues are virtually non-existent in the current 2160p transfer, which showcases bold and vibrant colors, especially noticeable under the sunny conditions of Morocco and Libya where the film was shot.
A comprehensive comparison between the native 4K presentation and the 1080p transfer upscaled to 4K reveals that grain and texture are markedly superior on the UHD. The HDR implementation further enhances the viewing experience with its improved luminance and color depth. The English version on the 4K Ultra HD boasts a mean video bitrate of 63.0 Mbps, while the total overall disc bitrate is 71.8 Mbps. In contrast, the Blu-ray's video bitrate for the English version averages a lower 19995 kbps, with the Arabic version slightly better at 22993 kbps. Notably, any lingering print defects in the 4K DI are minimal, aside from minor damage in specific frame grab instances.
Overall, Shout! Factory's meticulous work in restoring "The Message" results in an exemplary visual presentation. Clear distinctions between screenshots from different formats—UHD downscaled to 1080p, 4K-scanned BD-50 Arabic Version, and 4K-scanned BD-50 English Version—underscore the disparity in detail and vibrancy. This release successfully reflects Hildyard's cinematic vision with enhanced fidelity and depth, setting a new standard for future releases.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "The Message" by Shout offers a commendable array of audio options. Discs one and two feature an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Surround mix (3593 kbps, 24-bit) and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo track (2001 kbps, 24-bit). The third disc includes an Arabic DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Surround mix (3640 kbps, 24-bit) and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo track (2000 kbps, 24-bit). Both English-language tracks seem derived from the original 4-track stereo mix noted in the 1977 Chicago Tribune advertisement. While the dialogue is consistently audible on both tracks, there is a slight issue with reverberation, particularly at the film's beginning. The 2.0 stereo mix exhibits more pronounced reverberation compared to the 5.1 surround mix.
The 5.1 surround mix is notably more natural for spoken dialogue, with even pitch distribution across front channels, while music and sound effects are more effectively dispersed across the sound stage, enhancing the overall immersion. In contrast, the 2.0 stereo mix positions reverb prominently on satellite speakers, giving it a richer, albeit more localized, sound profile. Overall, both tracks surpass previous DTS-HD MA 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 mixes but retain minor issues such as occasionally high-mixed dialogue.
Additionally, Maurice Jarre’s score benefits greatly from these sound enhancements, capturing the unique sounds recorded during his travels with Moustapha Akkad across Arab and Islamic nations. His work with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is given new life through these high-definition audio tracks. The precision in audio quality is further complemented by accurate English SDH subtitles on discs one and two, ensuring character identification and clarity for non-Arabic dialogue portions.

The 4K UHD Blu Ray of "The Message" impressively compiles an array of extras that enrich the viewing experience. The included audio commentary by Producer/Director Moustapha Akkad, recorded in 2005, provides insightful anecdotes about the film’s production, though gaps in the commentary could benefit from a moderator. The restoration featurette is notably brief but informative on the technical processes involved. The comprehensive "Making of an Epic" documentary delivers captivating behind-the-scenes content and interviews with key crew members, showcasing the elaborate efforts behind the film. Additional promo clips and trailers, though varying in quality and presentation, add historical value to this collection.

"The Message" on 4K UHD Blu-ray presents an epic retelling of the story of Islam’s inception. The narrative, directed by Moustapha Akkad and starring Anthony Quinn and Irene Papas, remains impactful and deeply respectful of its subject matter. The film's portrayal stands the test of time, showcasing historical integrity while delivering emotionally resonant storytelling. The performances are compelling, with Quinn delivering a strong portrayal of Hamza. The casting overall is effective, enhancing the film's authenticity and dramatic weight.
Technically, the 4K UHD upgrade offers significant enhancements over previous releases. The image quality is markedly improved with more vivid color representation and refined detail. Details in the sets and costumes, significant to the film’s historical authenticity, are rendered with exceptional clarity. The HDR implementation boosts contrast and adds depth to both daytime desert scenes and intricately lit interiors. Audio performance is also commendable, as the upgraded DTS-HD Master Audio track delivers clear dialogue and a richer aural experience for Maurice Jarre’s evocative score. The surround sound elements are well-mixed, providing an immersive soundscape that complements the visual grandeur.
Additionally, "The Message" benefits from improved visual effects which, while sparse, contribute to the overall cinematic impact without overshadowing the human elements of the story. The film’s pacing maintains engagement throughout its lengthy runtime, ensuring that viewers remain invested in the unfolding events. In summary, "The Message" on 4K UHD Blu-ray is a technically superb release that enhances the viewing experience of this historical epic, making it a vital addition to any collection.

Review 1: The 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of "The Message" by Shout! Factory is nothing short of outstanding. This transfer is a remarkable improvement over the previous Anchor Bay release, showcasing a vastly superior visual fidelity. Colors are richer, details are crisper, and the overall image is far more vibrant. The audio presentation also benefits from an upgrade, although it isn't without minor imperfections. Despite these, the enhanced sound quality significantly elevates the viewing experience.
Review 2: Shout! Factory's re-mastering of "The Message" on 4K UHD delivers a stunning visual experience that both fans and newcomers will appreciate. The sharpness and clarity of the picture are commendable, making the epic story even more immersive. However, the English subtitles on the Arabic cut have been omitted possibly due to rights constraints. The inclusion of all legacy extras provides a comprehensive package that pays homage to this classic film.
Review 3: The newly released 4K UHD version of "The Message" stands tall with an impressive transfer that surpasses older editions. The visual quality is pristine, bringing out intricate details and vivid colors that enhance the film's historic narrative. Although some audio issues persist, they do not detract significantly from the overall experience. Enthusiasts will appreciate the extensive collection of bonus materials included in this definitive edition.
Review 4: "The Message" receives a much-deserved upgrade with Shout! Factory's 4K UHD release. The transfer is top-notch, breathing new life into the film with its extraordinary clarity and color accuracy. Some might be disappointed by the lack of English subtitles for the Arabic extended cut, which appears to be a contractual oversight. Nonetheless, the improvement in both video and audio quality makes this edition a must-have.
Shout! Factory's 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of “The Message” is an essential addition for any cinephile’s collection. This transfer exemplifies high-caliber visual refinement, leaving previous iterations, such as Anchor Bay’s, far behind. The enhanced resolution brings vibrancy and clarity, rendering every scene with outstanding precision. Audio upgrades further bolster this release, creating a more immersive auditory landscape despite minor residual imperfections.
This edition not only advances the technical aspects but also enriches the content by retaining all legacy extras, making for a comprehensive package. However, it is important to note the exclusion of English subtitles on the Arabic cut, likely due to rights and contractual issues. Nevertheless, this minor limitation does not overshadow the exceptional effort in restoration and presentation.
The Message is an epic and moving film that's both educational and entertaining. Shout! Factory's 4K transfer blows the Anchor Bay out of the water. I would strongly urge you to primarily view the UHD as the Blu-ray on Disc Two features a rather poor encode with a low bitrate. The audio is also substantially improved, although some minor issues remain. While it's nice to have the longer Arabic cut, English subtitles have been dropped likely due to rights issues and contractual reasons. All of the legacy extras have been brought back in this package. A VERY SOLID RECOMMENDATION.

PlotIn the early 7th century, Muhammad receives his first revelation from the angel Gabriel in Mecca, leading him to preach a new monotheistic faith: Islam. Despite facing persecution from the ruling Quraysh tribe for challenging their polytheistic beliefs, Muhammad's message begins to gain a following among Meccans, including his close companions Ali and Abu Bakr. Key events unfold, including the migration of early Muslims to Abyssinia seeking refuge and the eventual Emigration (Hijra) to Medina, which marks the formation of a united Muslim community. As the community in Medina strengthens, tensions between Muslims and Meccans escalate, leading to significant confrontations.
The story then focuses on the consolidation of the Muslim community's faith and increasing military and political struggles with Mecca. With lessons of patience, perseverance, and justice drawn from their experiences, the Muslims face numerous challenges as they strive to establish Islam as both a spiritual and social framework. Their journey embodies the broader narrative of early Islamic history, showing the profound impact of Muhammad's teachings on his followers and their unwavering commitment to their newfound faith amidst adversity and the creation of a lasting legacy.
