Risen's 1080p transfer offers satisfactory detail in close-ups and healthy black levels, featuring a beige/earthy color scheme with subdued vibrancy and minor light noise; however, some textures may appear smoother than expected.

Director Kevin Reynolds' 'Risen' marries scriptural narrative with dramatic elements to deliver a gripping, faith-exploring mystery through the eyes of a Roman nonbeliever. Joseph Fiennes excels, blending stoicism and vulnerability, while light imagery enhances the well-sustained tension and emotional depth.

The 1080p transfer of "Risen" delivers a reasonably satisfying digitally sourced image, which effectively captures the essence of the film. While rough textures like stone structures and frayed garments occasionally lack the tactile sharpness and depth one might expect, the overall definition remains adequate. Close-ups are particularly notable, showcasing intricate details such as scruffy facial hair, bloody battle wounds, and wrinkles with commendable clarity. Scuffed armor and other minor elements also come through effectively in supporting scenes. The color palette skews toward intense beige and earthy hues, with red accents standing out without overpowering the overall visual design. Nighttime exterior scenes benefit from healthy black levels, contributing to a layer of immersive realism.
However, the transfer isn't without its shortcomings. There is a subtle smoothness in some areas that limits the picture's potential for heightened lifelike sharpness. Additionally, flesh tones tend to be slightly creamy, but they maintain a realistic appearance overall. Light noise is intermittently present but doesn't detract significantly from the viewing experience. Despite these minor issues, the video presentation of "Risen" provides an adequately engaging visual experience that supports the film’s thematic elements effectively. Overall, the transfer maintains an acceptable standard for a Blu-Ray release, making for a sufficiently immersive viewing experience.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack presented in "Risen" offers a competent auditory experience, yet it falls short of exceptional. The initial battle sequences exhibit a lack of impactful resonance, with launched arrows and thrown pila projecting through the soundstage in a rather subdued manner. While clanking shields and the cries of combatants are present, they fail to dominate the auditory field as robustly as one might anticipate for such intense scenes. However, the low-frequency effects shine during the earthquake preceding Christ’s crucifixion, as the soundstage effectively conveys the tremor and ensuing structural collapses, adding a palpable sense of immersion.
In scenes outside of battle, such as the depiction of a flock of birds, the sound effects again feel somewhat restrained. Musical elements are decently clear and well-spaced, contributing positively to the overall sound dynamics. Dialogue is consistently intelligible, emanating from the center channel with good prioritization, ensuring that verbal exchanges remain distinct and well-defined throughout the film.

Kevin Reynolds' "Risen" is a compelling exploration of faith intertwined with a nuanced blend of historical and fictional elements. The film follows Roman Tribune Clavius, played by Joseph Fiennes, who is tasked with overseeing Christ's crucifixion and subsequently investigating the disappearance of His body from the sealed tomb. Reynolds and writer Paul Aiello employ a unique narrative structure, focusing less on Christ and His apostles, and more on Clavius as an outsider to the faith-driven events. This approach humanizes the biblical story and provides a fresh perspective, making it accessible to a broader audience. By framing the story as a procedural mystery, Reynolds successfully maintains a high level of tension throughout, despite the audience's familiarity with the biblical narrative.
The film’s technical aspects are straightforward, yet effective, with Reynolds utilizing light as an imagery tool to powerful effect. Joseph Fiennes excels in the lead role, portraying Clavius' internal conflict with subtle nuances. His journey from skepticism to acceptance is both relatable and poignant, as he grapples with the tangible evidence of Christ's divinity. Cliff Curtis brings a warm humanity to the role of Christ, complementing the narrative’s emotional depth with his quiet confidence and compassion. Peter Firth also delivers a strong performance as Pontius Pilate, adding layers of political tension and authority to the story.
"Risen" succeeds in blending outward sensations with inward revelations, offering a new dimension to the familiar tale of Christ's resurrection. The film’s strength lies in its ability to craft a thought-provoking narrative while maintaining a firm grounding in classical genre elements. With standout performances and a compelling storyline, "Risen" is a thought-provoking examination of faith through a fresh and introspective lens. The performances, particularly Fiennes', elevate the film, making it not only a biblical epic but also a deeply personal journey of discovery and belief.

"Risen," directed by Kevin Reynolds, reinterprets the familiar story of Christian salvation through the eyes of a Roman Tribune tasked with investigating the mysterious disappearance of Jesus Christ’s body. The film’s unique perspective is not only engrossing but also offers a refreshing departure from traditional biblical narratives. Cliff Curtis delivers an outstanding performance as Christ, elevating an already compelling storyline with his captivating portrayal.
The technical quality of Sony's Blu-ray release of "Risen" is commendable. The visual transfer is exceptional, showcasing sharp detailing and historically accurate production design. Consistent black levels and accurate flesh tones further enhance the viewing experience. The 5.1 audio mix is superb, providing a well-balanced integration of dialogue, musical score, and sound design, complemented by effective surround effects that are both immersive and unobtrusive.
From a supplementary perspective, the Blu-ray excels with substantial bonus features. The commentary track by screenwriter Aiello and producer Patrick Aiello offers invaluable insights into both the film's content and production process. Additionally, four featurettes, totaling thirty minutes, provide further exploration into the making of the movie, and five minutes of deleted scenes add depth to the storytelling.
In conclusion, "Risen" may not have the raw, visceral impact of "The Passion of the Christ," and it may not ever find the same legacy as "The Greatest Story Ever Told," but it's a unique and engaging motion picture that shakes up traditional formula and explores the key tenants of Christian salvation from a new perspective. The film boasts solid production values and several top-quality performances, particularly from Cliff Curtis as Christ. Sony's Blu-ray release of "Risen" features very good video and audio. Supplements satisfy in both quality and quantity. Highly recommended.
