Toy Story 4" makes a remarkable entry into the realm of 4K UHD Blu-ray, boasting an impeccable visual upgrade that vividly enhances the animated world. The film is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of widescreen 2.39:1, with a 3840 x 2160p resolution, benefiting from the HDR10 format that brings out the rich, dynamic range of colors. The clarity and depth of the image are significantly improved over its 1080p counterpart, showcasing finer details and textures across the board— from the intricate stitching on the toys' clothing to the subtle surface textures that bring characters like Forky and Gabby Gabby to life with striking realism.
The transfer, sourced from a 4K DI, exemplifies how high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut (WCG) can redefine animation, pushing the boundaries beyond traditional HD presentations. Colors are remarkably vibrant and full, revealing nuances in the film's palette that breathe new life into the cinematic experience. The UHD disc's rendition of night scenes and backgrounds is particularly noteworthy, displaying an enhanced contrast that deepens blacks without losing detail. This results in scenes filled with a three-dimensional quality and a more pronounced cinematic feel, especially in dimly lit interiors and the visually intense carnival sequences, which are awash with glowing reds, dazzling blues, and lively greens.
Moreover, the 4K UHD version's superior color handling enhances every frame of "Toy Story 4," making the animation feel more natural and closer to photorealism. The HDR colors surpass what is possible on Blu-ray's SDR spectrum, further highlighting the excellent color grading with improved contrast and luminosity. The visual presentation of "Toy Story 4" on 4K UHD is a testament to the technological advancements in digital animation, offering a visual feast that not only complements the storytelling but elevates it to new heights, making it a must-own for aficionados and newcomers alike.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Toy Story 4" boasts an immersive Dolby Atmos audio track that significantly enhances the viewing experience, albeit with some limitations in comparison to its DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 predecessor. The Atmos track excels in delivering a dynamic soundscape, with a keen emphasis on dialogue prioritization, maintaining clarity and intonation even during the film's more dramatic moments. The signature score, reminiscent of classic Westerns, alongside a rich variety of sound effects—from Rex's thunderous stomp to the ambient noise of a bustling carnival—creates a palpable sense of immersion. This is further enriched by the strategic use of LFE channels, adding depth and resonance that envelop the viewer in the movie's emotional and action-packed sequences.
The audio presentation thrives on its detailed placement of sound effects and musical cues across the soundscape, creating an enveloping aural environment that mirrors the onscreen action with precision. Atmospheric sounds and energetic action scenes benefit from expansive staging and natural positioning, offering a robust low-end that lends heft and presence. Despite this, the mix is somewhat front-heavy, focusing on delivering a wide and spacious soundstage rather than employing the rear channels to their fullest potential. Occasional moments see effective panning and use of overhead channels, but these are few, leaving some listeners desiring a more consistent utilization of the immersive capabilities of Dolby Atmos.
Navigating the shortcomings of a somewhat restrained mid-range that requires volume adjustments for optimal clarity, the "Toy Story 4" Atmos track nonetheless presents a satisfying auditory experience. Enhancements over the DTS-HD version are subtle but appreciated, especially in sequences where atmospheric effects and background activities come to life, albeit in a presentation that could have benefited from more aggressive surround and height channel engagement. This Dolby Atmos track succeeds in delivering an enriching and engaging soundscape that, while not without its flaws, elevates the overall viewing experience of this beloved animated feature.

Notable among the extras is a comprehensive audio commentary by director Josh Cooley and producer Mark Nielsen, illuminating various facets of production. The continuation of Woody's story, under the direction of Josh Cooley in his feature debut, seamlessly blends the adventurous spirit that defined earlier entries with a mature exploration of themes such as purpose, identity, and self-worth. The film's technical presentation on 4K UHD is impeccable, offering a pristine visual experience that highlights Pixar's meticulous animation and vibrant color palette, making it a reference-quality disc that showcases the capabilities of the format.
The narrative takes Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) on an existential journey, introducing Forky (voiced by Tony Hale), a makeshift toy experiencing its own crisis of purpose. This installment enriches the franchise's emotional depth by exploring Woody's quest for meaning beyond his role as a child's toy, against the backdrop of Bonnie's world. The addition of new characters like Forky, and the return of Bo Peep with a substantial role, provides fresh dynamics and deepens the series' exploration of toy sentience and loyalty. The voice casting remains outstanding, with the ensemble cast lending depth and humor to their roles, ensuring that the film resonates with both new audiences and longtime fans.

Pixar's "Toy Story 4" on 4K UHD Blu-Ray is a visual and auditory treat that not only brings a beloved franchise into the high-definition era but does so with a finesse that exceeds expectations. The film, remarkable for its pioneering CG animation and deep emotional resonance, receives a praiseworthy upgrade nearly 25 years after its original release. The 4K HDR10 presentation is nothing short of spectacular, offering a significant improvement over the Blu-ray version, with visuals that are more vibrant and detailed, breathing new life into the animated world. Accompanied by a stellar Dolby Atmos soundtrack, the audio quality is equally impressive—rich in clarity, with a DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio mix that employs a sophisticated use of the surround sound platform without overwhelming, ensuring a harmonious and immersive experience.
Noteworthy is the effective balance in audio presentation, which emphasizes detailed sonic clarity and crystal-clear dialogues without overpowering with unnecessary aggressive surround sound effects. This thoughtful audio execution complements the viewing experience, enhancing the thematic elements and providing a resonating punch when necessary. The film itself, while expanding on the adventures of Woody, Bo Peep, and introducing new characters, maintains the series' heartwarming narrative of purpose and belonging. Despite having lighter emotional stakes and treading familiar narrative grounds, "Toy Story 4" continues to explore new horizons in storytelling, blending nostalgia with fresh perspectives.

PlotWoody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang are facing a new chapter in their lives as their owner, Bonnie, starts kindergarten. During her orientation, Bonnie creates a new toy from trash named Forky, who becomes her favorite. Forky, however, is deeply troubled by his own existence, considering himself to be trash rather than a toy, and longs to return to the garbage. Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why life as a toy is worth living. The stakes rise when, during a family road trip, Forky escapes, leading Woody to chase after him, determined to bring him back to Bonnie for the sake of her happiness.
Woody’s rescue mission leads to an unexpected reunion with his old friend Bo Peep, who has embraced her independence after years of being on her own. As Woody and Forky travel back to Bonnie, they run into all sorts of trouble, meeting a colorful cast of new toys including the daredevil motorcycle-enthusiast Duke Caboom, the adorable plush duo Ducky and Bunny, and a vintage doll named Gabby Gabby with her own agenda. Their adventure across unfamiliar territory challenges their perceptions of what they want and what it means to be a toy.
