The Pirates! Band of Misfits on Blu-ray delivers an outstanding 1080p/MVC encode with impeccable detail, vibrant colors, and exceptional black levels, though the 3D presentation lacks significant visual impact beyond minor effects. Both 2D and 3D transfers exhibit superb clarity, but 3D fails to elevate the experience meaningfully.

The Pirates! The Pirates! Band of Misfits provides good, clean family fun with stop-motion animation that shines in intricate detail, despite lackluster 3D. Featuring a ragtag crew led by Hugh Grant's charming Pirate Captain, the film is a riotous, underdog adventure filled with heartwarming humor and educational hijinks.

The Blu-ray release of "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" is a visual triumph, affirmed by a stellar 1080p encode that showcases remarkable clarity and detail. From the intricacies of character models to the textures of wooden boards and stone roads, every frame is meticulously rendered. The colors are vivid, maintaining true-to-life replication with minimal banding, ensuring a pristine viewing experience free of compression artifacts. This high-definition transfer demonstrates exceptional contrast and deep black levels, delivering an immersive depth of field that animates the vibrant world created by Aardman Animations.
However, the 3D Blu-ray version presents a more nuanced experience. While it maintains the 2D version's sharp detailing and stable visuals, the added depth from the MVC encode mainly benefits exterior daylight scenes, effectively separating foreground elements and enhancing three-dimensional space. Yet, the 3D effects are generally muted, delivering only slight enhancements in spatial perception. There are standout moments—such as the pirate flag with springy eyes—but overall, the 3D presentation does not consistently elevate the film's visual engagement.
Presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the Blu-ray offers flawless contrast and razor-sharp clarity even in low-lit environments. The soft pastel hues, though slightly dimmer in 3D, exhibit bold warmth and retain accurate primaries throughout. The rich and intense black levels, especially in scenes involving full moon night skies or dark interiors, contribute to a visually arresting experience. Despite some variability in the 3D illusion's effectiveness, the Blu-ray remains a dazzling visual presentation, cementing it as a premier animated spectacle on home media platforms.

The Blu-ray audio presentation of "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" impressively harnesses the power of a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack to deliver an engaging and dynamic sonic experience. The sound design is powerfully front-heavy but makes adept use of wide imaging to create a detailed and immersive auditory environment. Dialogue is pristine, with crystal-clear intonation and precise placement, maintaining clarity whether transitioning from gleeful buoyancy to outbursts of hysteria. Bass lends depth and impact with distinct low-frequency effects that accentuate pivotal scenes involving crashing waves, cannonballs, and swashbuckling action.
The soundstage benefits from an expansive front end while incorporating precise sonic elements throughout the range. Though rear speakers are underutilized for much of the runtime, ambient effects and directional sounds during action sequences offer moments of immersive envelopment. The musical score by Theodore Shapiro and rock-inspired tunes are rendered with excellent clarity, well-spaced arrangement, and balanced low-end frequencies. The dynamic range is extensive, providing room-penetrating clarity, particularly noticeable during the energetic sea battles and comedic mayhem moments.
Listeners are effortlessly drawn into the diverse sonic environments, from the restrained confines of Ham Nite aboard the Captain's ship to the bustling bar scene where energetic activity fills the soundfield. Smooth and center-focused dialogue gains natural reverberation at appropriate narrative moments, such as those at the scientific symposium and awards show. Overall, "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" delivers an impressive audio experience that meets the expectations for animated feature sound presentations, combining precise dialogue, impactful bass, and an expansive, though occasionally front-heavy, soundstage to create an entertaining auditory adventure.

"The Pirates! Band of Misfits" serves up a rollicking adventure that is endearing for viewers of all ages. The film, voiced by a stellar cast including Hugh Grant as the bumbling yet oddly charming Pirate Captain, intertwines an underdog story with whimsical humor and inventive animation. Set in 1837, our maritime heroes are an eclectic bunch who next to never manage to loot anything worthwhile but make up for it with their wholehearted camaraderie and entertaining escapades. The plot takes an unexpected turn when the crew chances upon Charles Darwin (voiced by David Tennant), who reveals that their so-called parrot, Polly, is actually the last living dodo—a potential ticket to reclaiming the Pirate of the Year award. Despite predictable story arcs, the narrative is infused with quirky charm and heartfelt moments that underscore themes of friendship and perseverance.
The film excels in its animation, which is presented with stunning detail and fluidity through Aardman's signature stop-motion style. The omnipresent sense of motion in every frame captures both grand pirate escapades and subtle character interactions with equal finesse. Visually arresting scenes, such as a comedic contest amongst scientists and a perilous slide down several flights of stairs, are choreographed to keep viewers riveted. Despite some predictable plot turns, the characters' failings and their continuous endeavors for piratical success provide a consistent stream of both humor and high-seas excitement.
While "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" may not reinvent the wheel in terms of storytelling, it offers a refreshing blend of wit, engaging characters, and meticulous animation that ensures it stands out as a robust family-friendly film. Its light-hearted treatment of typical animated movie tropes makes it an enjoyable watch, aided by excellent voice performances and charm-filled character designs. Imelda Staunton's Queen Victoria adds a delightful layer of antagonism, serving as a perfect foil to our sea-faring misfits' determination for adventure.

"The Pirates! Band of Misfits" is a delightful animated feature that blends humor, adventure, and meticulous craftsmanship from Aardman Animation, the creators of 'Chicken Run.' The film's narrative may not break new ground, relying on familiar tropes and generic characters, yet it achieves its aim of providing sheer entertainment value. A particular highlight is the superb voice cast, which brings a clever and witty edge to the swashbuckling escapades. While it might not ascend to the ranks of animated classics, it boasts replay value that will captivate children and amuse adults alike.
Sony's Blu-ray release of "The Pirates!" excels in technical presentation. The video quality garners a perfect score, characterized by crystal-clear fine details, vivid and lifelike colors, and a superb depth of field. This results in an overall image free of compression artifacts and complemented by immaculate black levels that enhance shading nuances beautifully. The DTS-HD MA audio track is equally impressive, featuring a rich soundstage that delivers powerful low-frequency effects and exceptionally clear, well-placed dialogue.
Despite the film's 3D aspects not being its strongest selling point, the three-dimensional picture quality remains exceptional. The high-definition package also includes a robust selection of extras that appeal to both younger and older audiences. While some may prefer the 2D-only version due to uninspiring 3D elements, avid animation fans and HD enthusiasts will find plenty to appreciate here.
In conclusion, "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" gets a 100 for Video, as it is an absolutely stellar release from Sony. Fine details are crystal clear on foreground as well as background imagery, and the depth of field is superb. Colors are extremely vivid and lifelike for an animated feature. Combine all of that with top-tier black levels with perfect shading and an overall image with no compression artifacts. The DTS-HD MA track is quite impressive as well, with a big and convincing sound stage treated with sonic goodies like intense LFE from crashing waves to subtle perfection in the sibilance of its crystal-clear and accurately placed dialogue. Enjoy!

PlotA bumbling but enthusiastic pirate captain is determined to overcome his rivals and win the much-coveted Pirate of the Year Award, the highest honor among pirate peers. His quest is fraught with misadventures and mishaps, largely because he is, frankly, a rather inept pirate. Despite this, his loyalty and infectious charm endear him to his colorful crew, who are equally inept but unwaveringly supportive of their captain. Year after year, his attempts to win the prize fail miserably, mainly because he lacks the one thing all notable pirates seem to have in abundance: booty. In his world, piracy is not so much about the terror it induces but the loot it yields, and he and his crew are sorely lacking in this department.
The captain stumbles upon a chance to turn his fortunes around when he meets Charles Darwin, who points out that the captain's "parrot" is in fact the last living dodo. The promise of untold riches and scientific fame lures them to Victorian London, where they must evade the city's diabolical queen and an ambitious scientist who covet the bird for their own nefarious purposes. As the pirate captain navigates this new urban terrain, his mission for glory becomes one of survival, forcing him to outwit both old rivals and new enemies, while his aspirations for the award spark a deeper quest for identity and respect among his high-seas colleagues.
