Predators' Blu-ray presentation boasts an exceptional 1080p AVC transfer, shot digitally with the Panavision Genesis camera, delivering sharp delineation, punchy yet natural colors, pristine black levels, and impressive detail even in intricate jungle foliage and grizzled character faces, achieving a highly film-like quality without compression artifacts or digital noise.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix of 'Predators' impresses with its dynamic surround sound, immersive detail, rich bass, and clear dialogue, effectively enhancing action sequences and John Debney's nuanced score, creating an engaging and technically proficient audio experience.

The Blu-ray extras for "Predators" offer a mix of engaging insights and minor letdowns. The amiable and informative commentary by Rodriguez and Antal highlights the evolution from a 90s script to the final film, while the motion comics add prequel depth with original voice actors. The "Evolution of the Species" featurette is comprehensive but loosely structured. Other additions, like deleted scenes and trailers, round out an overall worthwhile package.

Predators is a commendable reboot with strong direction and clever nods to the original, focusing on adrenaline-pumping action and gritty battles. While it sticks closely to the established formula, with robust character dynamics and impressive sequences, it falls short on delivering fresh originality but remains an exciting technical spectacle with great potential for sequels.

"Predators" arrives on Blu-ray with a pristine 1080p resolution transfer, utilizing the AVC codec and presented in a theatrically accurate 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Filmed digitally with the Panavision Genesis camera, the result is exceptional, with a highly detailed and filmic presentation nearly devoid of noise. The transfer exhibits excellent delineation, sharp foreground objects, and naturally tapering sharpness in background elements. While a few minor shots show slight softness due to cinematography blips, overall facial details are intricate, making character visages like Laurence Fishburne’s richly pitted face particularly vivid.
The color palette is remarkably stable, with vibrant jungle greens and the contrasting dusty interiors rendered with precision. Instances of banding are absent even when smoke appears, although shadow detail occasionally underperforms in darker scenes. This darkness, however, plays well with the film’s gritty texture and tonality, providing a look that enhances the narrative's components. The darker schemes, punchy blacks, and balanced highlights contribute to a gradationally satisfying visual experience.
The 1080p AVC MPEG-4 transfer impresses with its lush jungle foliage, intricate military costuming, and dynamic depth. Recognizable details such as pock marks on Danny Trejo’s face and grizzled character nuances underscore the high resolution’s capability. Bright elements like jungle foliage and campfire hues pop without slipping into unnatural territory. The adept shadow delineation and stable contrast ratios elevate the nighttime action sequences. There are no digital noise reduction issues or compression artifacts, ensuring a transfer that matches, if not surpasses, theatrical quality. Overall, this Blu-ray release delivers exceptional video quality that honors the film's digital roots while maintaining a rich, organic visual appeal.

The audio presentation of "Predators" on Blu-ray is a remarkable experience, featuring a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that stands out for its dynamic, meticulously crafted surround sound. The sound mix is incredibly immersive, encapsulating viewers in the film's action-packed world from every angle. Each gunshot and explosion resonates with palpable impact, while subtler environmental sounds—like the rustle of jungle leaves or the buzz of insects—create a vivid sense of place. John Debney's score is perfectly balanced within the mix, transitioning seamlessly between moments of suspense and outbursts of action, and enhancing the overall atmosphere.
Dialogue clarity is another strong point, maintaining high intelligibility despite the chaos often unfolding on-screen. This ensures that Brody’s gravelly voice and the variety of accents from the ensemble cast come through crisp and clear. The bass levels are also noteworthy—rich, authoritative, and capable of bringing the room to life during intense scenes without overwhelming the other audio elements. Although some critics noted a somewhat front-heavy experience at times, the mix brilliantly makes up for it through its dynamic range and detailed treatment of spatial effects.
Overall, this is a robust and energetic audio mix that sets a high standard. Not only is the lossless format essential for fully appreciating the film’s intricate sound design, but it also brings a grand and visceral quality that significantly enhances the viewing experience. With additional Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks in Spanish, French, and Portuguese, as well as comprehensive subtitle options, this release caters to an international audience without compromising on audio excellence.

The Blu-ray release of "Predators" boasts an impressive array of extras that delve deeply into the film’s production and background. The commentary by Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal offers a rich, albeit somewhat cursory, glance at the film’s creation, featuring tidbits about the evolution of ideas and production stories. The motion comics, offering prequel vignettes, blend live-action elements with inked comic frames, though this mix may feel uneven to some viewers. The standout bonus is "Evolution of the Species: Predators Reborn," a six-part comprehensive documentary that explores aspects from casting to creature design. Other notable features include deleted scenes, trailers, a brief character profile in "The Chosen," and a scene breakdown by the Fox Movie Channel.

"Predators," rebooted under the vision of Robert Rodriguez, aims to recapture the suspense and intensity of the 1987 classic. Directed by Nimród Antal, this film showcases Adrien Brody as Royce, an unyielding mercenary who inadvertently becomes the de facto leader of a collective of Earth's most lethal individuals, all unceremoniously airdropped into an alien hunting ground. The diverse assemblage includes characters portrayed by Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Topher Grace, each one representing a unique facet of earthly violence. The premise is cleverly rooted in the trope of humans being the ultimate prey, expanding on themes reminiscent of Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game."
The narrative adeptly establishes a world where human predators become the hunted. While the characters embark on their grisly journey to survival against new breeds of alien creatures and occasionally each other, the film adheres to familiar franchise beats. The action sequences are well-refined, with highlights including a spectacular samurai sword duel and visceral predator combat scenes that emphasize gore and tension. Antal's direction shines in these moments, although some mid-film exposition via Laurence Fishburne’s cameo does little more than pause the chase to provide necessary plot clarifications.
One critique rests with the occasional narrative clutter, where some intriguing concepts such as interspecies predator dynamics are introduced only to remain underexplored, hinting at budgetary constraints rather than narrative oversight. Furthermore, despite Brody's committed performance and some stellar action sequences, the film falters in delivering a memorable crescendo akin to its predecessors. It instead opts for a more subdued finish that may leave hardcore fans desiring a more explosive denouement. Nonetheless, "Predators" provides an engaging, albeit familiar, ride through a carnage-laden jungle that promises to rekindle some of the original's primal thrills.

The Blu-ray release of "Predators" serves as a rejuvenating addition to the Predator franchise, delivering an engaging mix of atmospherics and action. The film, directed by Nimrod Antal and overseen by Robert Rodriguez, features strong performances from a cast led by Adrien Brody and Alice Braga. Although the narrative may not be groundbreaking, the movie delivers thrilling sequences and a handful of fresh elements that invigorate the Predator mythology. The artistry, particularly in its naturalistic visuals, successfully reflects the film's gritty tone without overly vivid coloring, creating an immersive viewing experience.
In terms of technical specifications, the Blu-ray excels with a high-quality video transfer that perfectly captures the film’s rich details and distinctive style. While it may not have the vibrancy seen in other high-definition releases, the visuals hold true to the director's intentions, offering a consistent and engaging aesthetic. The audio track is robust, prioritizing clear dialogue and providing ample space for the score to resonate, rather than opting for an aggressive sound design typical of action films. This approach enhances both intelligibility and the overall atmosphere.
Despite some shortcomings in special features, which lack the depth expected for a film rich in science fiction and visual effects, the extras included are still plentiful and provide an enjoyable exploration of the film’s production and creative process. The disc’s region-locked status might be a consideration for international audiences but remains a minor limitation in light of its overall quality.
The disc is region locked but contains excellent image and sound performance. The visuals are naturalistic, lacking a certain pop, but fit in nicely with the artistic style. The audio doesn’t give us the aural assault that most action films go for, instead seeming to prioritize solid speech reproduction and giving the score the maximum amount of breathing room. In both cases of presentation, the trade-off works perfectly and enhances the experience. It may not reinvent the wheel, but Antal and Rodriguez’s vision of the Predator franchise is novel enough to warrant a viewing.
