DreamWorks' release of "Kung Fu Panda" on Blu-ray 3D is nothing short of spectacular. Despite not being a perfect 3D title, the video presentation stands out with an impressive added dimension that enhances the already magnificent 2008 2D release. The transfer excels with exceptional clarity and stability, maintaining fine details across various textures, such as character fur, wooden floors, and stone walls. Blacks are darker without losing information in lower-light scenes, while vibrant colors like Tigress’ orange-and-black fur and Mantis' green body pop off the screen. Banding is minimal, and no other anomalies are present, ensuring a crisp and razor-sharp viewing experience throughout.
The depth achieved in the 3D transfer is superb, with only occasional instances of crosstalk. The visuals exhibit magnificent depth and separation, offering a remarkable sense of spacing between objects. This is evident in Po's Kung Fu dreams, the daunting flights of stairs, and the small details like Oogway’s neck and head extending outward. The entire screen is imbued with layers of dynamic and immersive visuals, where debris, confetti, and leaves appear to drift in front of and through the viewer’s space. Round objects such as vases and Po's belly look incredibly natural. While the disc does not offer 2D playback, the inclusion of the 3D element makes the viewing experience elevating and immersive.
The 2.35:1 aspect ratio brimmed with richly saturated colors immediately following the opening 2D CGI sequence. Whites are brilliant and crisp, while blacks stand inkily sumptuous without losing delineation, exemplified in intense scenes like Tai Lung's prison break. The direct digital-to-digital transfer reveals the extensive effort put into crafting each frame. Nuances like individual hair strands on characters’ faces and textures on clothing add lifelike realism. This sophisticated 3D presentation not only sustains a breathtaking depth of field but also offers a heightened sense of dimension that makes "Kung Fu Panda" an enduring visual marvel in Blu-ray 3D format.

The audio presentation on the Blu-ray release of "Kung Fu Panda" is a masterclass in sound design, featuring a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack that delivers an exemplary listening experience. The mix is balanced perfectly, with dialogue staying firmly grounded in the center channel while also exhibiting impressive panning and directionality without ever feeling forced. Bass frequencies are deep and powerful, yet maintain precision, making them both impactful and natural. Surround speakers are employed to exceptional effect, offering a rich immersive experience through a mix of ambient soundscapes and extraordinary directional effects. Standout scenes, such as Tai Lung's escape in Chapter 10, showcase the dynamic range and clarity of the entire soundstage, creating a lively and robust environment that is as clean as it is thrilling.
Rear channel activity is constant and envelops the listener within a 360-degree soundfield, capturing everything from distant crickets to the wind rustling leaves. This attention to detail crafts an engaging and realistic atmosphere that brings the film's world to life. The audio track excels with its directional panning, creating a believable spatial environment that is both aggressive in its low-frequency effects and smooth in its front channel separation. Key sequences display high levels of clarity and detail in the mid-range frequencies, ensuring that even the most minor sounds are audible amidst the chaos of action scenes. Dialogue remains perfectly balanced throughout, allowing conversations to be distinctly heard over the engaging background audio.
The Hans Zimmer and John Powell score shines with appreciable fidelity and clean instrumental differentiation, contributing to the overall high-caliber presentation. The result is a reference-quality audio experience that expertly marries subtle atmospheric nuances with bold, action-packed sequences, making "Kung Fu Panda's" Dolby TrueHD soundtrack an auditory delight that stands out in home entertainment sound design.

The Blu-ray release of "Kung Fu Panda" unfortunately offers very limited additional content. Paramount/DreamWorks has not included any new extras aside from a high-definition trailer for "Puss in Boots – 3D" and a standard 2D DVD copy of the film. This lack of substantial supplementary material can be disappointing for collectors and fans looking for more in-depth behind-the-scenes content or featurettes that delve into the production, animation, or voice acting process. However, the inclusion of the DVD copy does provide some added value for those who prefer physical media versatility.

DreamWorks' "Kung Fu Panda" stands out as a triumph in the animated film landscape, combining expertly crafted storytelling, compelling character development, and dazzling animation that resonates with audiences of all ages. Centering on the unlikely hero, Po (voiced by Jack Black), the film intertwines themes of individuality, self-worth, and perseverance set in ancient China. Po's journey from a clumsy, overweight noodle shop worker to the revered Dragon Warrior is heartfelt and humorous, showcasing a character whose physical shortcomings are overshadowed by his determination and spirit. These themes echo those of notable animations like Pixar's "Cars" and "Ratatouille," where the importance of inner qualities over external appearances is emphasized.
The animation in "Kung Fu Panda" is remarkable, with fluid action sequences and meticulously detailed environments that heighten the film's immersive experience. The voice cast delivers exceptional performances, with Jack Black infusing Po with endearing innocence and energy, while Ian McShane's portrayal of Tai Lung provides an intimidating and menacing presence. Dustin Hoffman's Master Shifu and Angelina Jolie's Tigress add depth to the narrative, though secondary characters like Liu’s Viper and Rogen’s Mantis receive minimal development, which some may see as a slight missed opportunity. However, the film's concise runtime ensures tight pacing without sacrificing its emotional core or comedic elements.
"Kung Fu Panda" excels in its fight choreography as well, boasting impressive sequences like Tai Lung's escape and the climactic showdown between Po and Tai Lung that balance humor with intensity. The film sidesteps the pitfall of relying on pop-culture references, opting instead for timeless humor and character-driven storytelling. This approach aligns it more closely with Pixar's oeuvre, marking it as one of DreamWorks' best animated offerings to date, appealing to both children and adults alike.

DreamWork's "Kung Fu Panda" on Blu-ray 3D proves to be a standout in animation home releases, deftly combining a compelling narrative, superb visuals, and high-quality sound. The story revolves around Po, voiced by Jack Black, whose endearing and comical demeanor drive an inspirational tale of discovering personal potential. The animation shines with vibrant colors and detailed textures, creating an engaging visual experience that holds up remarkably well to repeated viewings. The CGI work is top-notch, and the seamless 3D integration only enhances the viewing experience, offering stunning depth and immersion without any noticeable artifacts.
The audio presentation matches the visual excellence, featuring a robust lossless soundtrack that adeptly handles the dynamic range required for action sequences and the subtle nuances of quieter scenes. While the Blu-ray 3D package doesn’t come with an extensive array of supplements on-disc, the overall quality of the primary content compensates well for this shortfall. However, it is worth noting that additional features are available on a separate DVD included in the package, preserving the value for fans seeking more content.
The film is not just technically impressive but also carries substantial emotional weight. It addresses universal themes like self-acceptance, courage, and resilience against life's adversities. This emotional depth, combined with the technical prowess of DreamWorks' Blu-ray 3D release, makes it a must-have for fans of animation and martial arts alike. Ideal for audiences of all ages, "Kung Fu Panda" offers a gratifying reprieve from daily challenges, making it both an entertaining escape and an uplifting experience.
In conclusion, Kung Fu Panda is a film that does most everything right. Witty, action-packed, featuring a fabulous cast of characters, and with a strong, uplifting message, the film never sees a dull moment. The film holds up extremely well to repeat viewings and is destined to become a long-standing favorite among fans of animation, martial arts, or as a movie that lifts the spirits. DreamWork's Blu-ray 3D release is highly recommended for its superb 3D video and stellar soundtrack. Suitable for audiences of all ages, it is a top-notch Blu-ray release that comes highly recommended!

PlotIn the Valley of Peace, Po, a clumsy and overweight panda, dreams of becoming a kung fu master. He lives a humble life with his father, Mr. Ping, in their noodle shop, where his love for kung fu only seems like a distant fantasy. Meanwhile, the valley is protected by the Furious Five—Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane—a group of elite kung fu warriors trained by the wise and ancient Master Shifu. The peace is threatened when news arrives that the villainous snow leopard Tai Lung, a former student of Shifu, has escaped from prison and seeks revenge and the powerful Dragon Scroll.
Master Oogway, the old tortoise and kung fu sage, decides the time has come to choose the legendary Dragon Warrior, said to be worthy of receiving the Dragon Scroll's secret to boundless power. During the selection event attended by the entire valley, Po unexpectedly finds himself rocketed into the midst of the ceremony. Much to everyone's shock, including Po's, Oogway proclaims Po as the chosen Dragon Warrior. Skeptical of Oogway's decision, Shifu reluctantly agrees to train Po, who must now overcome the disdain of the Furious Five and his own self-doubts to realize his dream of becoming a true kung fu hero.
