'Bolt's' 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 Blu-ray transfer is pixel perfect, boasting pristine quality, vibrant colors, deep blacks, and exceptional detail. The high definition image is impeccably clean, with notable depth and flawless contrast that showcases the Disney team's superior CGI animation skills. A truly resplendent presentation.

'Bolt's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack delivers an astonishing and immersive auditory experience, from the powerful LFE thumps in action sequences to the nuanced surround effects during quieter moments. The dynamic range is expansive, directionality precise, and bass response rich, setting a benchmark in Disney's Blu-ray offerings.
Extra: 56
The supplemental package of 'Bolt' features a range of high-definition extras, including featurettes, deleted scenes, and interactive games, though the overall content depth is somewhat limited; however, the versatility of a tri-format release with Digital Copy, DVD, and Blu-ray makes up for it, offering quality and accessibility for families.

'Bolt' impresses with vivid colors, impeccable clarity, and rich visuals, along with a strong action-packed start and engaging plot, though it ultimately falls short of Pixar's magical standards. While the animation quality and voice-acting excel, the film leans too heavily on conventional Disney sentiments, offering a heartfelt if slightly uneven family adventure.

"Bolt" on Blu-ray is presented in widescreen 1.78:1 with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p encoding, delivering a visually stunning experience that exemplifies digital-to-digital transfer precision. The transfer is immaculate, showcasing crisp, sharp definition that amplifies the Disney team's CGI animation prowess. Every detail, from Bolt's individual hairs to the scratches on Rhino's plastic ball, is visible with remarkable clarity. The vivid colors, stable black levels, and impressive contrast ratio highlight the intricate animations and create an immersive viewing experience. Scenes like the U-Haul removal men's uniforms emphasize the richness of the color palette, while darker sequences display impressive shadow detail. The depth in cityscapes and train sequences provides a sought-after 3D pop factor, demonstrating superior animation detail, especially in close-ups like Bolt's scaly nose and the grass and trees in forest scenes.
The high definition image is impeccable and free from artifacts, digital noise, and edge enhancement, displaying an impressive dimensional perspective. The painterly skies and swirling brush-stroked trees add a layered, multi-dimensional quality to the backgrounds, making them appear almost tangible. The scene where Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino are drenched in rain showcases the intricate details of raindrops bouncing off the truck's surface and Bolt's fur becoming saturated. Las Vegas's nighttime vista further illustrates stunning visual contrasts with vibrant fireworks against a deeply dynamic black sky. The Blu-ray's flawless technical presentation ensures no visual degradation, presenting an impeccably clean and high-gloss video experience that truly captivates.
Overall, "Bolt" on Blu-ray stands as a benchmark for animated transfers, delivering an outstandingly blemish-free and highly polished visual presentation. With its exceptional level of detail, depth, and color excellence, it ranks among the finest transfers reviewed to date. The seamless blend of bleeding-edge CGI with traditional painting techniques results in an awe-inspiring end product that vividly brings Disney's animation to life.
Audio: 80
The audio presentation of "Bolt" on Blu-ray is an extraordinary example of state-of-the-art sound design, enhanced through a robust DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track. From the moment the film begins, the dynamic range captivates audiences, offering a fully immersive experience that effectively utilizes the entire soundstage. The Disney score, embracing a rich blend of mandolins and sparkling effects, resonates well within this mix. The LFE channel provides a notable presence, particularly during impactful sequences like Bolt’s thrilling collision scenes and the dramatic finale involving a studio fire. Each instance of low-frequency effects is articulated with precision, delivering bass responses that reach into the low 30Hz and upper 20Hz sub-bass regions.
Throughout "Bolt," impeccable directionality and seamless channel panning enhance the auditory experience, making ambient noises like rustling trees and bustling traffic feel naturally integrated. The surround effects are consistently engaging, delivering everything from subtle atmospherics to intense action sequences with impressive clarity and depth. Dialogue remains crisp and distinct across the front speakers, balanced meticulously with the energetic and modern synthesized rhythms of John Powell’s music score. An especially noteworthy scene involves a mobile phone ringing, which is rendered so precisely that it seems to emanate from within the viewer's own space.
The effectiveness of this audio track extends to quieter moments just as potently as in its most action-packed segments. The closing sequences, particularly the studio fire scene, are replete with nuanced details that contribute to an almost tangible sense of dimensionality. In conclusion, "Bolt’s" DTS-HD Master Audio track stands as a testament to expert sound engineering, combining dynamic range, bass depth, and articulate directionality to deliver a wholly satisfying auditory experience that stunningly complements the visual narrative. Disney has indeed outdone itself in creating an audio landscape that is both aggressively immersive and meticulously detailed.
Extras: 56
The Blu-ray extras for "Bolt" boast an impressive array of features, though they may feel somewhat superficial upon closer examination. Despite this, every extra feature is presented in high definition, which is a notable improvement over less comprehensive releases. Disney’s inclusion of a DVD copy and a digital copy extends the utility, making it an attractive package for families. The specific extras include both entertainment and informative content, from interactive games to insightful behind-the-scenes footage. The BD-Live functionality offers additional online exclusives that enhance user engagement. However, some features are too brief to provide substantial depth.
Extras included in this disc:
- Super Rhino: A humorous short film featuring the beloved hamster with superpowers.
- Deleted Scenes: Two storyboarded scenes with optional director commentary.
- In Session With John Travolta and Miley Cyrus: Behind-the-scenes recording of "I Thought I Lost You".
- I Thought I Lost You Music Video: A music video with Travolta and Cyrus.

- Bolt Art Galleries: A collection of concept artwork, color scripts, and storyboards.
- Bonus Standard Definition Copy of the Film: A DVD version for non-Blu-ray setups.

This collection provides solid supplementary content, well-suited for the movie's audience, but may lack depth for more critical viewers.

'Bolt' offers an engaging and heartwarming narrative, solidly helmed by first-time directors under the visionary guidance of John Lasseter. The story centers on Bolt (voiced by John Travolta), a canine TV star who mistakenly believes his on-screen superpowers are real. When he is accidentally shipped from Hollywood to New York and separated from his co-star Penny (voiced by Miley Cyrus), Bolt embarks on a self-discovery adventure to rescue her, with the help of Mittens the cat (Susie Essman) and Rhino the hamster (Mark Walton). The movie juxtaposes thrilling action sequences with heartfelt moments, effectively capturing the attention of both children and adults. The early scenes packed with high-octane action set a bar that the rest of the film struggles to maintain, yet the lovable characters and their emotional journeys offer enough substance to keep viewers invested.
Technically, 'Bolt' exemplifies Disney’s return to form with a captivating blend of traditional animation and cutting-edge CGI. Vivid colors, impeccable clarity, and richly detailed visuals are standout features of the Blu-ray presentation, ensuring an engaging viewing experience. The film also benefits from a well-rounded voice cast, although Miley Cyrus’s performance as Penny might strike some as miscast. Despite its engaging visuals and entertaining premise, 'Bolt' occasionally falters with a conclusion that leans into Disney's sentimental tendencies, slightly undermining its initially strong post-modern satire.
'Bolt' manages to meld action, comedy, and adventure with underlying themes of self-identity and the value of genuine relationships over fame. While it might not reach the heights of Pixar’s most lauded outings like 'Wall-E' or 'Kung-Fu Panda', it stands as a commendable effort from Disney, balancing dynamic action sequences with emotional depth. The movie adeptly conveys messages of love, loyalty, and self-discovery, which will resonate with its primary young audience while offering enough clever twists and humor to entertain their adult counterparts. Even though it skirts close to familiar Disney tropes in its climax, it successfully maintains a fun and touching narrative journey.

The Blu-ray release of "Bolt" delivers an outstanding audio-visual experience that sets it apart from many animated titles available today. The video transfer is consistently stunning, offering a vibrant and sharp presentation that showcases every detail with remarkable clarity. Paired with the jaw-dropping DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio, which provides ground-rattling soundscapes, every aspect of the movie's sights and sounds is elevated, making it a must-have for home theater enthusiasts.
Despite the movie's minor cinematic shortcomings, "Bolt" captivates with its fast-paced, humorous, and occasionally inspired adventure narrative. This release is complemented by the inclusion of both a bonus DVD and a Digital Copy, providing flexibility for viewing in various formats. However, it's worth noting that the extras package falls short, as most features don't exceed the five-minute mark, offering minimal additional content.
In conclusion, the audio and video presentations on this Blu-ray release are very impressive indeed. Both contain various moments that may make it into my demo material collection! While the inclusion of both a bonus DVD and a Digital Copy of the movie is a nice touch, the extras package is a little mediocre. Most of the features don't make it to the five-minute mark. A very strong audio/video transfer and the inclusion of multiple copies of the movie increase the rating for this release.
