The Blu-ray release of "Cat Ballou" by Sony offers an exceptional video presentation that aligns with the high standards anticipated from a top-tier transfer. The 1080p/AVC-encoded video brings forth an impressive visual experience, with vivid and accurate colors that brim with life. The warm and smartly saturated hues are complemented by inky black levels and sweltering contrasts, providing a cinematic depth that remains true to the original photography. Details are sharply delineated, particularly in close-ups, where fine textures such as stubble and fabric stitching are rendered with clarity. The grain field is managed with precision, only briefly faltering at rare intervals, and the landscapes deliver endless nuances without any discernible banding or compression artifacts.
Cinematographer Jack Marta’s work shines in this transfer, capturing the breathtaking Colorado landscapes with meticulous attention to detail. The Blu-ray showcases his skillful use of the natural environment, most notably the rich, golden aspens adorning the mountainous backdrop. The image maintains consistent excellence across the breadth of the film with a flawless 1.85:1 aspect ratio, devoid of damage or digital manipulation. Any potential issues with black levels compromising delineation are infrequent and short-lived, ensuring a viewing experience that meets high preservation and restoration standards. Expert testimonials, including those from notable reviewers such as Robert A. Harris, endorse the superior quality of this release, underscoring its position as a top-caliber offering in the Blu-ray market.

Sony's Blu-ray release of "Cat Ballou" offers an impressive auditory experience with its two lossless options: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo, previously featured in the 2016 Twilight Time edition. The 5.1 mix notably enhances the film's engaging score and interstitial song elements, providing a satisfying spatial distribution of effects, such as gunshots and galloping hooves. Despite the low end not reaching the depth of contemporary soundtracks, it remains robust enough for most listeners. The dialogue is consistently clear and clean, with flawless prioritization. Audiophiles might regard the 2.0 mix as authentically replicating the original 1965 theater sound, offering a competent albeit less dynamic listening experience.
For those interested in historical authenticity, the English 2.0 DTS HD-MA track authentically recreates the film's original theatrical sound, preserving its vintage charm. In contrast, those seeking an enriched audio landscape may prefer the wider soundstage of the remastered English 5.1 DTS HD-MA track. Both tracks support English SDH subtitles, accommodating a broad audience. The film's music, notably "The Ballad of Cat Ballou," written by Mack David and Jerry Livingston, and the score by Frank DeVol, were both recognized with Academy Award nominations for their remarkable contribution to the film’s enduring appeal—a testament to an exceptional year in film music history.
Extras: 61

"Cat Ballou," directed by Elliot Silverstein, offers an engaging and enjoyable take on the Western genre with a tonal twist that sets it apart from its peers. Released initially in 1965 and available again on Blu-ray, the film features strong video and audio quality from Sony, enhancing its viewing experience. The movie benefits from a strong cast including Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin, and others, each delivering performances that balance farce with drama. The narrative unfolds through an unconventional structure, set against a backdrop of revenge, justice, and humor. Lee Marvin’s dual role as both the boozy, inept sharpshooter Kid Shelleen and the menacing Tim Strawn showcases his versatility, contributing significantly to the film's comedic yet engaging nature.
The plot centers on Cat Ballou, portrayed with a blend of innocence and defiance by Jane Fonda, a schoolteacher swept into a world of disorder as her father faces threats from a ruthless land developer. Marvin's portrayal of Kid Shelleen is both comical and incompetent—an unlikely hero who manages to maintain the film's humorous tone without slipping into disarray. This character dynamic is juxtaposed against Fonda's arc from prim schoolteacher to daring outlaw, providing depth to the story. Supporting roles, including Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye’s musical performances as a Greek chorus, enrich the film with vibrant entertainment.
Silverstein’s feature-film debut draws from his background in television, imbuing "Cat Ballou" with a pacing and style reminiscent of TV storytelling yet elevated for the big screen. The witty script by Frank Pierson and Walter Newman, adapted from Roy Chanslor's novel, combines action with clever humor, creating a classic that remains as entertaining today as it was over half a century ago. The Blu-ray release ensures that this comedic Western continues to charm audiences with its unique blend of humor and western tropes.

PlotThe story follows Catherine "Cat" Ballou, a recently graduated schoolteacher who returns to her Wyoming hometown to find her father's ranch under siege by the evil Wolf City Development Corporation. Her father, Frankie Ballou, is being harassed by a notorious gunman with a silver nose named Tim Strawn, hired by the corporation to force him off his land. Determined to protect her family and home, Cat turns from a law-abiding citizen into an outlaw. She assembles a motley crew consisting of her former teacher Clay Boone, his uncle Jed, and an Indian ranch hand named Jackson Two-Bears.
In desperation, Cat hires the famous gunslinger Kid Shelleen to help defend the ranch. However, the once-legendary Kid is now a drunken wreck who can barely shoot straight. Despite his shortcomings, the ragtag group makes a valiant effort to stand up against the corrupt forces threatening their lives. As the situation intensifies, Cat finds herself poorly navigating the violent world of outlaws and gunmen, leading to a series of misadventures and confrontations that forever change her life.
