Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey's Blu-ray offers an overall satisfying 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode with strong contrast, rich primary colors, vibrant secondary hues, and accurate black levels, despite some softness and murky shadows in a few scenes. The HD presentation benefits greatly from a consistent fine grain, though a new OCN remaster would enhance it further.
Audio: 70
The Blu-ray's 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix offers punchier audio than the original, with an excellent front sound stage and clear dialogue, but occasionally suffers from overpowering effects and a slightly front-heavy balance. The DTS-HD 2.0 stereo mix, however, delivers superior clarity and fidelity across the soundstage.

The Blu-ray Extras for 'Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey' feature engaging audio commentaries by key cast and crew, a vibrant SteelBook design with a mix of dark red and bright orange tones, and essential supplemental content such as the retrospective 'Bill & Ted Go to Hell - Revisiting A Bogus Journey'.
Movie: 60
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey offers bigger hijinks and high stakes compared to its predecessor, delighting fans with engaging performances from Reeves and Winter, memorable moments inspired by The Seventh Seal, and a vibrant SteelBook edition by Shout! Factory. However, it suffers from film bloat and contrived subplots.

The video presentation of "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" on Blu-ray is an attractive and generally satisfying experience, featuring an 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode. The film’s elements, while not in pristine condition, have aged reasonably well. The source material does display a notable softness, particularly in visual effects sequences, hinting at less than ideal resolution. Nevertheless, the presentation delivers strong definition, with excellent details visible in backgrounds owing to precise contrast and crisp highlights that enhance visibility without overexposing the hottest spots.
Black levels are mostly true and accurate, providing the 1.85:1 image with commendable depth. However, certain scenes exhibit murky, dark gray shadows that slightly flatten the image. On a positive note, primary colors, especially reds and greens, remain vibrant and rich throughout the film. Secondary hues such as mauve and lavender also stand out, adding diversity and animation to several sequences. Furthermore, facial complexions are portrayed with a healthy and revealing clarity that enhances character presence.
Consistently layered with a fine grain, the HD presentation is competent and enjoyable. However, it could greatly benefit from a new remastering effort utilizing the Original Camera Negative (OCN) to enhance visual fidelity further. Despite its minor flaws, this Blu-ray release champions nostalgic charm with adequate visual quality, making it a solid offering for fans.
Audio: 70
The audio presentation of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey on Blu-ray includes a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (MA) track and a 2.0 DTS-HD MA track, providing listeners with choices that cater to different preferences. The 5.1 mix is notably front-heavy, yet offers a significant improvement over Excellent Adventure in terms of its low-end response and surround sound activity, as highlighted during the battle of the bands concert. Dialog clarity is strong, supported by balanced effects that contribute to an engaging front sound stage. However, some users may experience the sound effects overpowering the vocals, particularly in louder segments where the midrange can appear ear-piercingly bright.
The DTS-HD 2.0 stereo mix presents a more balanced and authentic audio experience, staying true to the film's original sound design. This track is highly recommended for its clearer distinction in the upper ranges and improved imaging that feels both broad and engaging. Background activities and music are more convincingly spread across the soundstage, and vocal prioritization ensures that dialogue remains clear against the backdrop of robust rock tracks. Additionally, the synthesizer processing enhances this mix further by expanding the soundfield efficiently, making it a well-rounded choice for listeners seeking a more faithful auditory experience.
In summary, while the 5.1 DTS-HD MA track adds depth and dynamic range to certain scenes, it may falter in its balance between dialog and sound effects. The DTS-HD 2.0 stereo mix, on the other hand, excels in maintaining acoustic fidelity and warmth, ultimately delivering a more cohesive and satisfying audio experience for enthusiasts of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

The set includes two in-depth audio commentaries, featuring perspectives from stars and producers, as well as a detailed exploration by the film’s writers. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, offered as a standalone SteelBook edition by Shout! Factory, continues the whimsical and offbeat adventures of the titular characters played by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winters. The sequel, first made available in the Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Collection, now gets its individual release. This film pits the slackers against De Nomolos, a future villain who sends robotic clones to kill them. The plot sees Bill and Ted navigating a surreal and hilarious afterlife to regain their lives by challenging the Grim Reaper, portrayed brilliantly by William Sadler. Despite its quirks and a narrative that’s more convoluted than its predecessor, this sequel provides plenty of amusement with higher stakes and elevated hijinks.
One of the key elements of Bogus Journey is its ambitious script, further explained in the insightful commentary segment on the Blu-ray. Writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon deliver a sequel that grapples with multiple antagonists and an ambitious narrative scope. Unfortunately, these elements contribute to a sense of film bloat. The character of De Nomolos, played by Joss Ackland, appears underdeveloped and superfluous within the storyline, diluting the plot's impact. However, the film retains its charm with memorable cameos and creative absurdity.
While the humor can sometimes be hit or miss, fans of the original will appreciate the consistent chemistry between Reeves and Winters. Their camaraderie delivers a nostalgic and entertaining experience, akin to classic duos like Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey from Wayne's World. Although not as well-received as Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, this sequel still holds intrinsic comedic value and provides an enjoyable viewing for those looking to revisit a quintessentially ‘90s cult classic.

"Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey" on Blu-ray presents a valuable addition for both returning viewers and new fans alike. Featuring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, this sequel continues the iconic oddball humor and fantastical elements from the original film. Boasting an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 AVC, the video quality showcases vibrant colors and strong contrasts, although some may find the dark red tones overdone. The audio performance includes solid English DTS-HD MA 5.1 and DTS-HD MA 2.0 tracks, ensuring an immersive auditory experience, albeit the stereo mix standing out as particularly remarkable.
Shout! Factory’s release includes a near bare-bones set of special features, which may be a downside for those seeking a more comprehensive collection. However, it offers new commentary tracks that enhance the viewing experience with engaging insights. The SteelBook design caters specifically to collectors and admirers of aesthetic packaging, despite receiving mixed reactions due to its muted color scheme and perceived lack of dynamic artistry. Additionally, this release serves those who prefer the movie separately without investing in the previously released double feature package.
In conclusion, while "Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey" might not ascend to the legendary status of its predecessor, it remains an entertaining cult classic with a loyal following. For SteelBook aficionados and standalone film collectors, this Blu-ray edition presents a notable opportunity to own a piece of cinematic nostalgia. The technical specifications bolster its appeal, making it a commendable purchase for dedicated fans looking to revisit or discover this quirky sequel.
