Scream Factory's 1080p Blu-ray of 'Exterminators of the Year 3000' delivers a decent AVC encoded transfer in 1.85:1 that, despite age-related issues, minor denoising, and a drab palette, achieves acceptable detail levels and maintains a filmic grain without significant compression issues.
Audio: 47
The Exterminators of the Year 3000's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono track delivers clear dialogue but suffers from shallow, dated dubbing and limited dynamic range, lacking the punch expected for a film with prevalent car chases and explosions.
Extra: 37
The Blu-ray extras for 'The Exterminators of the Year 3000' feature candid and insightful reflections from actor Robert Iannucci, including a detailed audio commentary and an engaging interview on his experiences during the 1983 production. Additional materials include trailers and TV spots, enhancing the nostalgic value for fans.

"Exterminators of the Year 3000," a lo-fi homage to "Mad Max," features chaotic script, minimal production values, amusing dubbing, and practical stunts. Set in a water-devoid future, it entertains with bad acting and campy charm, making it perfect for midnight movie madness with friends.

The Blu-ray transfer of "Exterminators of the Year 3000" presented by Scream Factory offers an AVC encoded 1080p video in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Despite the inherent challenges linked to the low-budget, 1983 source material, Scream Factory has managed a respectable upgrade. The presentation maintains a natural lo-fi ambiance that matches the film's aesthetic. Close-ups display acceptable detail levels, revealing makeup blemishes, sweat beads, and vehicle scuff marks. However, the image can appear softer and less detailed in wider and darker scenes, with some evidence of unorganic grain clumping and minor denoising effects that slightly reduce fine detail.
Color reproduction is competent yet limited, with a palette that tends to be washed out rather than vibrant. Skin tones appear natural, albeit somewhat faded. Black levels are generally deep but occasionally suffer from crushing, particularly in darker sequences, obscuring finer details. While there are minor instances of dirt and debris, the transfer avoids major compression issues such as banding or aliasing, ensuring a consistent viewing experience.
Overall, while this Blu-ray release may not offer the crystal clarity seen in modern films, it represents the best possible version given the original material's limitations. Fans of the genre will likely appreciate the authenticity and effort put into preserving the film's gritty, post-apocalyptic charm.
Audio: 47
The Blu Ray release of "Exterminators of the Year 3000" features an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono track that reflects the inherent limitations of its source material. Despite being an Italian film with multilingual actors, this release only includes the English dubbed version, resulting in noticeable mismatches between dialogue and lip movements. Dynamic range is fairly restricted, with car chases and explosions lacking the depth and punch usually expected from action sequences of this genre. Fidelity is adequate yet unremarkable, maintaining clarity but falling short in delivering a truly immersive audio experience.
Dialogue reproduction somewhat tarnishes the overall audio consistency by sounding analog and slightly worn, while voice synching issues are prevalent throughout the film. The sound effects exhibit a lack of layering and directionality, appearing more as loud ambient noises than realistically dynamic elements. Despite being free from pops, cracks, hiss, and shrills, the mix remains largely underwhelming. It’s functional but falls short of providing the robust, explosive sound design one might anticipate from such a low-budget action spectacle.
Overall, this mono track fulfills basic requirements but doesn't elevate the film’s auditory dimension. With no subtitles to aid comprehension, viewers encounter a predominantly clear yet flat soundtrack that leaves much to be desired in terms of dynamic variation and low frequency extension. The audio presentation stays true to its dated and dubbed nature, embodying the film's lo-fi character but ultimately delivering an unexceptional listening experience.

Iannucci’s candidness adds genuine value for fans. "Exterminators of the Year 3000" is a chaotic yet entertaining post-apocalyptic film that emphatically wears its influences on its sleeve. Clearly inspired by the "Mad Max" series, especially "The Road Warrior," it delivers a dystopian landscape where water scarcity drives the plot. Alien, our protagonist (portrayed by Robert Iannucci), alongside a young boy named Tommy (Luca Venantini), ventures through this desolate world in muscle cars, facing off against a gang led by Crazy Bull. Despite its minimal production values, the film captivates with over-the-top action sequences, practical effects, and entertainingly erratic dubbing and editing.
Set in a future earth stripped of water, the narrative unfolds within a dusty, sun-scorched wasteland rather than the advertised futuristic cityscape. The film’s low-budget origins are evident through its cast of multilingual actors and late '70s vehicles. Despite its derivative and predictable plotlines, "Exterminators of the Year 3000" utilizes practical stunts and vehicle crashes that will appeal to action enthusiasts. The costumes and aesthetics mirror those of the "Mad Max" films, providing a nostalgic charm to the otherwise lackluster plot.
While the film lacks originality and polish, its trashy, B-movie nature renders it a cult favorite for late-night viewing with friends. The amusingly poor acting and earnest yet misguided attempt at emulating a more significant, more successful franchise make it an ironically enjoyable experience. The film’s refusal to take itself seriously is precisely what makes it so endearing. It may be a blatant knock-off, but it’s one that revels in its chaotic, low-budget glory, promising an entertaining ride from start to finish.

Scream Factory’s Blu-ray release of "The Exterminators of the Year 3000" exemplifies their dedication to unearthing cinematic oddities from relative obscurity. The film, a derivative yet endearing pastiche, is a curio for fans of B-movies and those with a taste for the outré. While the original quality of the film—both visually and aurally—leaves much to be desired, this release offers a surprisingly satisfying experience. The practical stunts and effects, devoid of any CGI, are a highlight, showcasing the raw, gritty charm of early '80s low-budget filmmaking.
Video quality on the Blu-ray is commendable, enhancing the film’s visuals to an appreciably clear state without losing the gritty texture that defines its era. The audio, however, remains imperfect, reflecting the limitations inherent in the original production. The supplementary features stand out, particularly an engaging commentary and an interview with one of the film's stars, which provide hilarious and candid insights into the production. These extras elevate the overall package, making it an invaluable addition for enthusiasts of cult cinema.
In conclusion, while "The Exterminators of the Year 3000" is undeniably a flawed film, it possesses an odd charm that will resonate with specific audiences. Scream Factory’s release captures this essence well, combining decent technical presentation with substantial extras. For those who appreciate the subgenre of “so bad it’s good” cinema, this release is highly recommended. It's not for everyone, but for those with the right sensibility, it can be a uniquely enjoyable experience.

PlotIn a post-apocalyptic future devastated by nuclear war, water has become the most valuable resource. Bands of survivors fiercely compete for control of the dwindling supply. One resourceful boy named Tommy lives in a desolate settlement that is on the verge of dehydration. Determined to save his community, Tommy sets out in search of a legendary water source rumored to be located deep in the wasteland. Along the way, he encounters a loner named Alien, a tough but reluctantly heroic figure who possesses exceptional skills in scavenging and combat. Alien initially resists getting involved, but when he sees Tommy's determination, he decides to help the boy in his quest.
As they journey through the harsh landscape, they face numerous threats from roving bands of marauders and other desperate survivors who will do anything to secure the precious liquid. Their mission becomes more perilous as they are pursued by antagonistic forces led by a ruthless warlord eager to hoard the water supply for himself. Despite the constant danger, Alien and Tommy form a bond and learn to rely on each other for survival. The journey tests their resolve and ingenuity as they get closer to discovering whether the fabled water source is real or just a myth born out of desperate hope.
