The reboot of 'Hellboy,' while visually engaging with copious CGI and nods to Mike Mignola's original comics, suffers from an overly convoluted plot and lack of the fun found in earlier adaptations, ultimately feeling forced and misdirectional despite its technical merits.

The Blu-ray presentation of "Hellboy" by Lionsgate Films features an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in its original 2.39:1 aspect ratio, derived from a digitally captured imagery using Arri Alexa models and finished at a 4K DI. This results in a transfer that demonstrates excellent clarity and detail, down to the smallest features such as the stitching and threading of Hellboy's trenchcoat. Despite some sequences exhibiting slightly softened CGI and occasional murky scenes in dimly lit environments, overall detail levels are superb, with intricate textures and fine details meticulously rendered. Notably, the black and white segments in the opening display nicely modulated gray scales and impressively deep blacks, while color palettes often evoke a Bava-esque richness with lurid purples, reds, and greens.
Further enhancing the visual experience, the transfer exhibits a slightly subdued and controlled contrast, which gives certain sequences, especially those set in London, a more grayish and overcast appearance, contributing to the film's darker, horror-oriented tone. However, this restraint does not compromise the vibrancy of the saturated primaries; Hellboy’s crimson skin and the cerulean blue sky are particularly striking. The presentation maintains crisp, brilliant whites with intense highlights during explosions and fiery scenes. Black levels remain inky and rich, offering excellent gradational details within the darkest corners, such as in the interiors of Baba Yaga's house. The makeup work on David Harbour’s Hellboy exposes every pore and wrinkle during close-ups, providing an outstanding HD video experience that balances detailed textures with broader cinematic compositions flawlessly.

The Dolby Atmos audio presentation of "Hellboy" on Blu-ray is exceptionally dynamic and immersive, bringing a robust and engaging auditory experience to viewers. The mix is both energetic and precise, leveraging surround sound channels effectively, especially through well-crafted panning effects that seamlessly whip through and over listeners. This provides an enveloping experience that enhances the viewing pleasure, making strategic use of vertical placement for added depth. Even in quieter scenes, discrete effects are paired well with ambient environmental sounds, creating a rich and textured soundfield.
Dialogue remains clear and coherent throughout the movie, presented with superb fidelity and an impressive dynamic range. Each line is crisp, ensuring no detail is lost even amidst the bombastic action sequences. The sound design intricately integrates ambient sounds in various outdoor scenes, enveloping the audience in the movie's environment. This balance between dialogue clarity and comprehensive sound effects guarantees a thoroughly captivating audio experience.
Overall, "Hellboy" on Blu-ray features the same demo-worthy Dolby Atmos soundtrack as found on its Ultra HD release, offering both high-end audio enthusiasts and casual listeners a meticulously crafted and technically proficient auditory experience. From sweeping panning effects to deep environmental ambiance, this presentation is a testament to outstanding sound design.

The "Hellboy" (2019) reboot from Lionsgate presents a film that draws heavily from Mike Mignola's original comic book material, focusing on darker and more complex story elements, yet it fails to completely capture the spirit and fun of its predecessors. Directed by Neil Marshall, this iteration attempts to weave multiple subplots involving Arthurian legends, mutant giants, and various occult societies, resulting in a convoluted narrative that struggles to form a cohesive story. While the film features an array of vivid characters and elaborate CGI, the overwhelming number of plot threads ultimately detracts from the overall viewing experience. David Harbour delivers a solid performance as Hellboy but is overshadowed by the legacy left by Ron Perlman.
The screenplay, penned by Andrew Cosby, endeavors to inject psychological depth and gravitas into the story, yet ironically it clashes with the character’s inherently whimsical nature. The film often veers towards the comically absurd, particularly in scenes like those featuring an occult society in England, which feel misdirected and out of place. Despite some genuinely entertaining sequences involving demonic creatures and witches, the film's attempt to integrate these various elements into one seamless narrative results in confusion and a lack of clear direction. Ultimately, although this "Hellboy" embraces its dark source material with cinematic fervor, its overly ambitious narrative structure detracts from the straightforward enjoyment found in del Toro's earlier adaptations.
Adding to the problematic tone is the film’s forceful attempt to appear relevant and edgy through frequent f-bombs and flashy subtitles for deciphering foreign languages, which come off as contrived rather than organic to the storyline. This juxtaposition of trying to maintain a gritty yet entertaining façade only serves to highlight the missteps in balancing humor with horror. "Hellboy" is undeniably rich in subplots and stylistic flair but seems to neglect the fundamental element of fun that made the previous adaptations memorable. Despite the ample use of CGI and action-packed sequences, it ultimately flounders under the weight of its own ambition.

The Blu-ray release of "Hellboy" brings the latest reboot of the Dark Horse Comics icon to home theaters with a blend of high-definition visual excellence and sonic prowess. Directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, and Ian McShane, the film attempts to reboot the franchise after Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman's versions. Unfortunately, the narrative is a mixture of convoluted storylines that struggle to coalesce into a compelling whole. This entry falters in igniting sustained interest, leaning heavily on sporadic moments of excitement without fully realizing its emotional potential.
From a technical perspective, the disc is exemplary. The HD video presentation is crisp and detailed, capturing the intricacies of the film's dark, atmospheric aesthetics. Complemented by a superb Dolby Atmos mix, the audio experience is immersive, enveloping viewers in a rich tapestry of sound that heightens the overall viewing experience. Despite its minor content flaws, the Blu-ray's visual and audio merits make it a worthwhile acquisition for home theater enthusiasts. The set of bonuses, albeit limited in quantity, caters to dedicated fans who appreciate behind-the-scenes insights.
In conclusion, while this iteration of "Hellboy" may not achieve the stylistic charm or emotional depth of its predecessors, it offers moments of entertainment within a technically robust Blu-ray package. The film’s nods to 19th-century occult societies may intrigue some viewers, helping sustain interest through its more lackluster segments. Fans of the series will find value in the excellent audiovisual quality and specialized content offered by this release, even if the movie itself is a mixed bag.

PlotHellboy, a demonic being who works for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD), finds himself caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human as he confronts an ancient sorceress who seeks revenge against humankind. The sorceress, Nimue, known as the Blood Queen, was dismembered centuries ago and her parts scattered across England to prevent her return. In the present day, however, a secret society called the Wild Hunt aims to gather her parts to resurrect her. Hellboy is dispatched to England to assist the BPRD and the Osiris Club in hunting down three giants causing chaos.
Upon arrival, Hellboy learns of the prophecy that he will cause the end of the world. Dealing with feelings of isolation and questions about his own existence, he clashes with people who fear and distrust him, including some within the BPRD itself. Struggling with his identity as a monster prophesied to doom mankind, he grapples with the decision of where his loyalties lie. As Nimue's influence grows and her pieces are brought together, Hellboy encounters a range of characters—from an old acquaintance who's a psychic medium, to a young woman who can speak to the dead, and a merman with valuable information. Together, they must stop Nimue before she regains full power to unleash her vengeance on the world.
