Deadpool's Blu-ray offers a fantastic 1080p transfer with excellent sharpness, rich colors, and deep black levels, vividly showcasing Deadpool's detailed suit and intense action scenes, albeit slightly lagging in shadow detail compared to its 4K counterpart.
Audio: 84
Deadpool's Blu-ray boasts an aggressive DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround mix that is immersive and meticulously detailed. Dialogue is clear, sound effects are well-delineated, and LFE presence provides a punchy impact. Despite lacking a Dolby Atmos mix, the dynamic audio presentation remains top-notch and engaging.
Extra: 68
The Blu-ray extras for "Deadpool" are abundant and engaging, featuring detailed sections like a 19-minute feature on deleted/extended scenes (with optional commentary by director Tim Miller), a comprehensive 80-minute behind-the-scenes documentary, two humorous yet insightful audio commentaries, gag reels, concept art, and promotional materials. Timings are clear, but the supplement authoring needs refining.
Movie: 76
Deadpool excels in combining snarky humor, inventive narrative structure, and a unique R-rated flair, delivering a superhero film that is both irreverent and entertaining despite a formulaic plot. Tim Miller's direction, coupled with Ryan Reynolds' perfect portrayal, achieves an impeccable balance of action and comedy.

Deadpool's Blu-ray presentation by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is a notable 1080p transfer using the AVC codec, framed in its original 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Captured digitally at 3.4K and finished at 4K for its Digital Intermediate, the movie delivers high-definition visuals that are impressive. The dynamic range showcased here highlights Deadpool's costume, where the intricate details such as the texture of the spandex, smudges, and fraying are remarkably clear. The color grading, while slightly on the cooler side, maintains a natural-looking palette that makes the weathered red of Deadpool's suit pop. Despite some CGI elements occasionally appearing less sharp, particularly during wide shots and effects sequences, the overall image stability and absence of compression anomalies enhance the viewing experience. Black levels are deep and consistent, with commendable shadow detail that mostly holds up well even in interior, murky scenes.
The image quality of this Blu-ray is strong, offering sharp resolution and vivid colors. Specifically, Deadpool's suit and the blood standout against murkier backgrounds, reflecting a robust contrast application. Skin tones and highlights are accurate, contributing to an engaging viewing experience. The high fidelity is somewhat diminished when directly compared to the Ultra HD Blu-ray version, where the Blu-ray shows as slightly washed out during exterior daytime action scenes. On non-HDR10 displays, this SDR/Rec 709 grade provides more discernible highlight and shadow detail than its HDR10 counterpart, making it a preferable option for such setups. However, for those with HDR10-capable displays, this Blu-ray might appear less sharp and vibrant in comparison.
Technically adept, the encoding uses MPEG-4 AVC, delivering clarity and fine detail throughout the film. Complex scenes like the final action sequence demonstrate strong dimensionality and depth. The black levels contribute to the immersive 'underworld' sets with their inky depth and excellent handling of shadow detail. Despite the murky palette attendant to its dark comedy genre, colors such as red are vividly rendered, enhancing visual interest amid more colorful set pieces. Facial textures maintain high fidelity thanks to detailed makeup work replicated accurately by the transfer. Overall, the disc remains clean with no noticeable digital noise or artifacts.
Audio: 84
The Blu-ray audio presentation of “Deadpool” features a dynamic and aggressive DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix that significantly enhances the viewing experience. From the outset, the track establishes its prowess with a freeway fight sequence packed with detailed panning effects, powerful crash sounds, and more nuanced components like bones breaking and blades cutting through flesh. The surround activity is consistently impressive throughout the film, covering extensive spatial cues and a rich blend of background noises even in quieter dialogue scenes. Despite the hyperactive soundscape, dialogue remains distinct and intelligible, even when Deadpool’s words are muffled beneath his mask. The prioritization of audio elements is meticulously executed, ensuring high fidelity regardless of the on-screen action’s intensity.
The absence of a Dolby Atmos track on the Blu-ray edition is noticeable, particularly when compared to its UHD counterpart. However, the provided 7.1 DTS-HD MA track does not disappoint. Highlighting superb sound effects design, the audio features clear dialogues, immersive and vivid surround sound, and finely delineated effects that elevate key sequences, such as the scrapyard climax. Although some may find the LFE channel could offer more depth and aggression, especially given there are only three major set pieces, the overall sound landscape remains engaging and robust. For enthusiasts seeking an even more immersive experience, switching to DTS: Neural:X offers a closer approximation to a full hemispherical mix, although it still falls short of competing with a true Dolby Atmos experience.
Technically, the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound mix delivers on expectations with expansive directional panning and atmospheric effects characteristic of the superhero genre. Quip-laden dialogues are centrally positioned for clear articulation while the surrounds effectively incorporate Tom Holkenborg’s score alongside pop tunes, adding to the film's energetic vibe. Dynamic ranges are well-executed, with forceful low-frequency extensions that make action scenes feel palpable. Good use of surround channels ensures a fully immersive sound experience captured in balance with Deadpool's continuous wisecracking.

Tim Miller’s Deadpool defies conventional superhero archetypes with irreverence and self-awareness, merging chaotic action with uproarious humor. The film introduces audiences to Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), a vigilante for hire whose life spirals following a terminal cancer diagnosis. Seeking a cure from the nefarious Ajax (Ed Skrein), Wade endures torturous experiments, emerging disfigured but imbued with regenerative powers. The narrative, structured through interspersed flashbacks, skillfully balances origin story exposition with high-octane present-day vengeance as Deadpool hunts Ajax for retribution. The film’s meta-commentary, peppered with endless pop culture references and fourth-wall breaks, crafts a distinctly comedic tone that sets it apart from its genre peers.
The opening credits of Deadpool immediately signal the film's unique blend of satire and subversion, as creatively irreverent titles poke fun at superhero convention. Throughout, Reynolds shines in his quintessential role, delivering rapid-fire quips amidst frenetic action sequences. His chemistry with Morena Baccarin's Vanessa, coupled with T.J. Miller's witty Weasel, anchor the film’s emotional undertones. The well-choreographed action scenes, underscored by an eclectic soundtrack, effectively complement Deadpool's sardonic personality and maintain brisk pacing under Miller’s direction.
While Deadpool follows a conventional origin story framework, it thrives on its unapologetic R-rated content and boundary-pushing humor. The inclusion of characters like Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) further enrich the narrative with comic relief. However, some critics argue that the film occasionally falls into formulaic traps, particularly with familiar plot beats and traditional damsel-in-distress elements. Nonetheless, Deadpool transcends its narrative predictability through a blend of audacious comedy and heartfelt moments, offering a refreshing departure from typical superhero fare and hinting at expansive potential for future installments.
Total: 78
"Deadpool" bursts onto the scene with irreverence, humor, and a refreshing break from the norm of traditional superhero fare. Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the titular character is nothing short of sensational, bringing to life a smartass anti-hero who delivers meta humor, foul language, and unabashedly brutal violence. The film’s R rating is justified as it plunges deep into adult comedy, making it one of the funniest releases in recent years. The storytelling, while following a familiar arc, is executed with an engaging skewed narrative and tone, which consistently entertains and delights viewers. For audiences weary of overly serious superhero movies, "Deadpool" offers a fun and welcome reprieve.
On the technical front, the Blu-ray edition of "Deadpool" excels with strong HD picture quality that remains error-free. The 7.1 DTS-HD MA surround mix is immersive, pulling the audience deeply into the action with precision and clarity. While those considering a UHD upgrade might find the Ultra HD Blu-ray to be a marginally better investment for its enhanced visuals, the Blu-ray still delivers a top-notch experience. Accompanying the film are nearly two hours of special features, excluding Audio Commentaries, that offer keen insights into the making of this unconventional superhero film, expanding the viewer's appreciation and enjoyment.
Those who prefer their superhero movies on the portentous side may want to stick with the efforts of folks like Zack Snyder. However, for those yearn for a Pirandello-esque smartass (which many have), there's likely no finer example in contemporary film than "Deadpool." Although the movie doesn't break new ground in terms of story arc, it masterfully delivers its self-aware humor and unique narrative style. The film is an exhilarating mix of fun, sharp wit, and dazzling SFX. Technical merits are first-rate, and "Deadpool" comes highly recommended.
