Warner Bros.' 4K UHD release of 'The Color Purple' impresses with a pristine 2160p/HDR transfer and preserved bonus features. The film's emotional heft, driven by stellar performances from Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Danny Glover, shines through Spielberg's epic, despite some sentimental overtones.

Warner Bros.’ 4K UHD release of “The Color Purple” presents an impressive visual upgrade from its 2011 Blu-ray counterpart. Despite no official confirmation of a new scan, the transfer showcases substantial improvement in fine detail and texture, elevating the viewing experience. The HEVC-encoded 2160p presentation, supported by HDR10, offers stunning contrast levels and lifelike skin tones, reflecting a broader and more vivid color spectrum. While the film maintains Spielberg’s intentional dreamlike softness in some sequences, the overall clarity and warmth are undeniably enhanced. Notably, blacks are deep and inky, with no signs of crushing, preserving the nuanced shadow details.
The film’s 1.85:1 framed Ultra HD video presentation is bolstered by excellent encoding on a triple-layer disc, ensuring smooth playback throughout its 154-minute runtime. Colors appear robust yet natural, avoiding excessive saturation or forced color timing changes. The improved midrange contrast brings out refined details in various backgrounds, adding depth without sacrificing image integrity. HDR10's subtle application aligns well with the film's period and aesthetic, offering a faithful representation of its cinematography.
Overall, the video presentation of this 4K UHD Blu-ray release of “The Color Purple” is a remarkable leap forward. With balanced primaries, finely tuned flesh tones, and impressive texture detail in close-ups and wide-angle shots alike, this release captures the essence of Spielberg’s original vision beautifully. The vibrant yet naturally rendered hues, combined with well-managed film grain and exquisite outdoor sequences, make this an essential upgrade for both purists and modern viewers alike.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "The Color Purple" features a robust DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix, retaining the same high-quality lossless surround mix from the previous 2011 Blu-ray Digibook. Despite being a relatively dialog-driven film, the audio presentation excels in its balance and richness. Dialogue is presented with exceptional clarity and precision, ensuring every word is easily captured by the viewer. The Oscar-nominated score by Quincy Jones vibrantly occupies the soundscape, effectively utilizing the full range of the surround channels to enhance the emotional impact of key scenes. Though bass is used sparingly, it significantly supports the musical numbers, adding depth and weight that enrich the overall experience.
The audio mix precisely layers dialogue, background effects, and music without overwhelming any single element. Rear channel activity is particularly noteworthy, providing an immersive listening experience with clear directionality and ambient sounds that transport the viewer into the film's setting. While a Dolby Atmos track could potentially add further spatial dimensions, the current DTS-HD 5.1 mix effectively captures the essence of the original audio design, making it one of the more authentic sonic presentations available for this film.
Ultimately, even though an object-based surround mix might have offered marginal improvements, this Blu-ray's audio presentation remains practically perfect in execution. Optional subtitles are available in multiple languages, including English (SDH), French, German (SDH), and others, further enhancing accessibility for a global audience. Overall, this release provides an excellent auditory experience that preserves the artistic integrity of Steven Spielberg's classic adaptation.
Extras: 69
This 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "The Color Purple" includes a comprehensive set of extras that provide a compelling look into the making of this classic film. While all featurettes are carried over from the previous Blu-ray release and appear to have been sourced from SD materials despite being encoded in HD, they still offer valuable insights. These extras delve deeply into the film's production, casting choices, and its adaptation from Alice Walker’s novel to the screen. Although the only new feature, "The Color Purple: A Bold New Take," is exclusive to the digital redemption and not available on the physical disc, the existing content does an admirable job of exploring the cultural and historical impacts of the film.

Steven Spielberg's "The Color Purple" is a sweeping epic that spans forty years in the life of Celie, an African-American woman played by Whoopi Goldberg, who endures unimaginable abuse and racism in the early 20th century South. This 4K UHD Blu-ray release celebrates the film’s enduring legacy, further enhanced by a meticulous 2160p/HDR transfer. The narrative centers on Celie's brutal journey from being mistreated by her father and later forcibly married off to the equally despicable Albert "Mister" Johnson, played by Danny Glover. Glover's performance is particularly notable for its departure from his typically likable roles, making his character one of the most despised villains on screen.
The ensemble cast delivers unforgettable performances. Oprah Winfrey’s turn as the spirited Sofia and Margaret Avery as the enigmatic Shug Avery add depth to Celie’s painful but transformative experiences. The visual storytelling is elevated by Allen Daviau’s cinematography, which adeptly captures both the vibrant and darker interiors of Celie’s world. This visual richness is achieved through intelligent use of “magic lights” that focus on keeping the characters in striking clarity, vital for scenes filled with emotional gravitas.
Despite its moments of sentimentality, which are characteristic of Spielberg’s work from that era, "The Color Purple" remains a technically and narratively stunning achievement. Spielberg's adept direction, coupled with an evocative score and meticulous production design, represents a significant stride in his filmography. Whoopi Goldberg's portrayal of Celie is particularly transformative, embodying the character with such intensity that it transcends simple acting. Ultimately, while it may have elements that feel dated or softened for modern sensibilities, "The Color Purple" continues to be a powerful film with a strong emotional core, compelling performances, and a story that resonates deeply with its audience.

Steven Spielberg's "The Color Purple" arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray, providing an impressive visual and auditory update to this seminal film. Beneath the meticulous restoration lies the powerful narrative of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, conveyed through Steven Spielberg's direction and a stellar ensemble cast including Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah Winfrey. The 2160p/HDR10 transfer enhances Allen Daviau's cinematography, immersing the viewer in a rich and textured visual experience. Despite the absence of new supplemental materials, the beauty of the upgrade lies in its pristine restoration, complemented by a robust DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that enriches the film’s emotional depth.
Warner Bros. has done an exemplary job preserving the film's atmosphere and elevating its presentation to meet modern standards. Each frame is teeming with detail and the HDR implementation accentuates the film’s dynamic range, delivering both dazzling highlights and intricate shadow details. The legacy bonus features from past releases remain intact, adding historical value to this edition. With an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and subtitles available in multiple languages, including English SDH, French, and Spanish, this release is accessible to a broad audience.
Maybe today’s sensibilities would have done something different with "The Color Purple", but 35 years ago it was a staggering film that impacted a lot of people. The film is still wonderfully acted, and while it’s not perfect, it still provokes conversations and critical thinking about some of America’s past indecencies. But even more importantly, Warner Brothers has done a fantastic job restoring and remastering this film to peak glory, giving us a stunning 4K UHD disc with some nice extras as well. Definitely check it out if you’re into epic dramas, and worth a buy if you enjoy the film.

PlotIn the early 20th century American South, a young African American girl named Celie is forced into a life of hardship and servitude following her mother's death. The victim of repeated sexual abuse by her father, she bears two children by him, both of whom are taken away from her. Celie is then unwillingly married off to a cruel and domineering man, Albert, who treats her as little more than a slave. Isolated from her beloved sister Nettie, Celie resigns herself to a bleak existence, her worth and dignity relentlessly stripped away. She struggles to find her identity and worth in a world where she is continually devalued and abused.
Celie's life is punctuated by the women she meets: her steadfast sister Nettie, the fiercely independent Sofia, who is married to Albert’s son Harpo, and the glamorous singer Shug Avery, who captures both Albert's and Celie's affections. These women, through their own strengths and trials, help illuminate the oppressive societal structures that Celie faces. Over time, the bonds Celie forms with these women empower her to transform her life. The friendship with Shug becomes a pivotal influence, helping Celie to cultivate her self-worth and prompting the awakening of her own voice and identity amidst the pervasive racism and sexism of the times.
