Ghost's 4K UHD release delivers enhanced clarity, improved textures, and superior color grading with Dolby Vision, making it the definitive visual experience of the film, though not a drastic departure from previous Blu-ray versions.
Audio: 71
The 4K UHD release of Ghost relies on the original Blu-ray's Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack, featuring sharp vocals and occasional standout moments in its audio. While functional, the use of surrounds and LFE is minimal, leaving room for improvement with a potential future Atmos upgrade.
Extra: 46
This 4K UHD release of "Ghost" includes all extras from the 2020 Blu-ray without new additions, featuring insightful commentary by Director Jerry Zucker and Bruce Joel Rubin, an engaging Filmmaker Focus, detailed breakdowns of iconic scenes, and a classic-making retrospective, albeit with some dated footage.
Movie: 76
The 4K UHD release of 'Ghost' delivers a nostalgic viewing experience with enhanced 2160p/Dolby Vision video, although it retains the same Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio as previous editions. Fans will appreciate revisiting this culturally significant film, despite the lack of new bonus content.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Ghost" is a significant upgrade over its previous Blu-ray incarnations, though not a drastic transformation. Paramount has successfully enhanced the film with a 2160p UHD resolution that adds an impressive layer of clarity and depth to the visuals. The 1.78:1 HEVC 4K transfer ensures a sharp and vibrant image that introduces superior textures, especially noticeable in cityscapes, street scenes, and both gritty and polished interior settings. While “Ghost” may not be inherently the sharpest film, this UHD presentation judiciously enhances image crispness, maintaining its film-like aesthetic.
Utilizing Dolby Vision color grading, the new release improves tonal depth without radically altering the original coloring. Subtle enhancements can be observed in dynamic scenes; for example, Sam's iconic wine-colored shirt exhibits a refined color accuracy, and shadowy elements offer more defined black levels and richer shadow details compared to the Blu-ray. The overall color palette feels more alive, particularly in urban grays and low light scenes. Improvements in white balance deliver better accuracy and brightness, enhancing realism in various visual elements such as clothing and road markings.
The encode quality is outstanding, free from any intrusive artifacts or anomalies, contributing to a near-pristine viewing experience. The print is notably clean, although minor imperfections are exceedingly rare and virtually unnoticeable. This release firmly showcases "Ghost" at its visual best, effectively elevating the film with remarkable yet faithful enhancements that fans will appreciate as the quintessential home viewing option for years to come.
Audio: 71
The audio presentation of the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Ghost" utilizes the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack, originally featured on the Blu-ray edition. This consistency in the audio department ensures listeners are treated to clean and sharp vocal clarity. While the soundtrack may not have been overhauled for this release, the quality remains satisfactory. Surround channels are deliberately employed to underscore key scenes, adding depth without overwhelming the listener, while the LFE subtly punctuate prominent moments, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
However, this soundtrack might leave some audiophiles desiring more, particularly in the absence of a Dolby Atmos upgrade which could have taken full advantage of spatial audio technology to better immerse viewers in the haunting ambiance of the film. Despite these limitations, the preserved audio remains an adequate representation of its era, retaining its charm through its judicious use of dialogue and environmental effects.
In essence, while the "Ghost" 4K UHD Blu-ray audio presentation may lack innovative updates such as Dolby Atmos, it delivers a respectable auditory experience through its faithful reproduction of the original Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix. The track provides a crisp and clear auditory journey that remains true to the film's nostalgic essence, while thoughtfully integrating subtle yet effective use of surrounds and low-frequency effects to highlight pivotal scenes.
Extras: 46
The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Ghost" includes comprehensive extras retained from the previous 'Paramount Presents' line. The new release features a 2160p/Dolby Vision video presentation while retaining the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack from previous Blu-ray editions, with no new supplemental content added. This preservation of the original sound mix allows viewers to experience the film in its authentic audio environment. As a culturally significant piece, “Ghost” has stood the test of time and continues to resonate decades beyond its initial release.
"Ghost," a box-office triumph and the winner of two Academy Awards, established itself as a cornerstone for '90s cinema alongside blockbusters like "Titanic" and "Jurassic Park." The performances of Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore not only turned them into household names but also redefined the cinematic portrayal of romance, marrying paranormal elements with a compelling love story. The memorable pottery scene remains iconic, showcasing the film’s unique ability to intertwine romance and suspense within its narrative. The enduring appeal of "Ghost" comes not only from its plot but also from its ability to evoke genuine emotion—a hallmark of a classic.
The film intricately charts the emotional journey of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) as a spirit trying to connect with his partner Molly (Demi Moore) through psychic Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg). It weaves suspense with a heartfelt exploration of love transcending physical boundaries. This UHD release allows both seasoned fans and new audiences to experience this powerful narrative in stunning visual clarity, reinforcing its status as one of the better love stories of its era. As viewers revisit or discover this film, they will appreciate its timeless message of hope and unyielding love beyond life's confines.
