Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" shines in its 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation by Sony, pushing the limits of visual fidelity utilizing 10-bit video depth, a wider color gamut (WCG), and high dynamic range (HDR) alongside Dolby Vision, all encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec. Despite being captured digitally at a 3.4K resolution and finished through a 2K digital intermediate (DI) process—which may slightly limit its full potential compared to a native 4K finish—the 2160p presentation still manages to elevate the viewing experience. The detail enhancement is evident, with an uptick in clarity bringing to life the film's intricate environments, character textures, and vibrant setting. Particularly, the nuanced rendering of skin textures, clothing weaves, and the dense jungle scenery underscore the advantages of the upgraded resolution and richer color palette afforded by WCG and HDR. While some may argue the distinction between this UHD version and its Blu-ray counterpart isn't overwhelmingly stark, it nonetheless solidifies itself as the superior viewing option for this high-energy adventure.
The film's dynamic contrast and color reproduction benefit immensely from Dolby Vision, amplifying the depth and vivacity of its visual elements without diverging from natural aesthetics. Greens of the jungle canopy pop with newfound intensity, while flesh tones gain a more authentic warmth, and nighttime scenes exhibit remarkable clarity and depth thanks to impeccable black levels. Despite challenges such as mild aliasing and posterization in certain shots—minor detractions in an otherwise immaculate transfer—the overall image maintains a pleasing consistency across varied lighting conditions and action sequences.
Sony’s 4K UHD presentation not only emphasizes finer details and textural nuances—like individual strands of hair and intricate fabric weaves—it also enhances depth perception, making the lush environments of Jumanji feel almost three-dimensional. Highlights include the lifelike depiction of natural elements, from sun-drenched clearings to the densest foliage, achieving a palpable sense of immersion. Black levels are profoundly deep, ensuring that darker scenes preserve detail without succumbing to crush, contributing to the overall pristine quality of the presentation. Although the leap from Blu-ray to UHD isn't as monumental as some might hope, this release proves itself as a must-have upgrade for aficionados equipped with UHD and Dolby Vision-capable displays, offering a visually stimulating experience that complements the film's adventurous spirit.
Audio: 91
The audio presentation of "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" on 4K UHD Blu-ray boasts an object-based Dolby Atmos track, establishing a significant upgrade over the Blu-ray's 5.1 DTS track and providing an unparalleled auditory experience. The foundation of this audio marvel lies in its Dolby TrueHD 7.1 core, which already stands tall over the solid DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track offered on the standard Blu-ray. Enveloping the listener in a lively mix of atmospheric sounds, discrete effects, and a richly layered score, the Atmos track elevates the immersive experience with its dynamic utilization of the available sound channels. From the quieter suburban scenes offering spatial subtleties to the explosive jungle action sequences booming with LFE presence, the audio intricately balances clarity, directionality, and depth, bringing the thrilling world of Jumanji to life with remarkable fidelity.
Throughout the movie, the Atmos configuration shines, especially in sequences filled with mad dashes through the jungle or the intense roars of motorcycle engines, leveraging its larger sonic surface area for an engaging aural journey. Action scenes benefit from meticulously placed sounds that utilize the Atmos platform's full potential, creating an all-encompassing soundscape. Dialogues remain crisply clear against the backdrop of chaos, ensuring every spoken word is delivered with precision and coherence, maintaining the film's narrative integrity amidst its sound spectacle.
The technical prowess of this audio mix is further evidenced by its low-frequency extension, bringing ground-shaking intensity to scenes of rhino stampedes and echoing explosions, while the surround sound presentation masterfully circulates the tribal drum beats and jungle ambiance, enveloping the listener in a continuous auditory embrace. From subtle overhead bird chirps to the thunderous roar of helicopters, the track meticulously crafts a 360° soundfield that not only supports but enhances every on-screen action. Coupled with a dialogue reproduction that ensures every laugh and whisper is heard with clarity and emotion, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" delivers a family-friendly yet sonically robust experience that is as thrilling as it is immersive.
Extras: 53
The "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" 4K UHD Blu-ray extras, while not groundbreaking in quantity or quality, deliver a coherent extension of the movie’s self-aware and entertaining spirit. Viewers might be disappointed by Sony’s decision not to include these extras on the 4K disc itself, necessitating a switch to the Blu-ray disc to access them. The highlight among the extras is undoubtedly the "Jumanji, Jumanji" music video featuring Jack Black and Nick Jonas, delivering comedic relief and showcasing the film's fun tone. The featurettes, although varying in depth and detail, offer valuable insights into the movie's making, including behind-the-scenes looks at stunts, effects, and the legacy of the original "Jumanji" movie. The gag reel provides a typical yet amusing collection of outtakes. Despite the lack of an audio commentary or more innovative content, the included extras enhance the overall viewing experience by celebrating the movie's unique blend of humor, action, and nostalgia.
Extras included in this disc:
- Gag Reel: A compilation of humorous bloopers and outtakes.
- “Jumanji, Jumanji” Music Video: A comedic performance by Jack Black and Nick Jonas.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" revisits the enchanting world of Jumanji with a modern twist that combines nostalgia with fresh, innovative storytelling. This sequel marvels by ingeniously flipping the premise of its predecessor—instead of pulling the jungle out of the game, it draws players into its wild heart, a video game world brimming with dangers and adventures that demand more than just passive engagement. The introduction of four high school students, each embodying distinct adolescent stereotypes, into this perilous landscape where they assume avatars opposite to their real-world personas sets the stage for a thrilling and humor-filled journey. Dwayne Johnson shines as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, embodying the insecure yet intellectually gifted Spencer, while Jack Black steals scenes as the embodiment of teenage girl Bethany, delivering performances that blend comedic brilliance with heartful moments of self-discovery.
The film's strength lies in its character dynamics and the actors' ability to play against type, creating an out-of-body experience that is as hilarious as it is insightful. Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas contribute significantly to this ensemble, embodying their characters with gusto and adding layers to the video game's challenges. The narrative cleverly utilizes video game mechanics like lives, levels, and NPCs, grounding the fantastical elements in a reality familiar to the audience. It's a balance between action-packed sequences and moments of character growth, making "Welcome to the Jungle" not just a visual spectacle but a story about overcoming insecurities and discovering one's strengths.
Structurally, the movie adheres to video game logic, an approach that serves its plot well by offering a predictable yet satisfying progression through challenges and obstacles. This adherence to the conventions of video game design not only entertains but also subtly critiques and celebrates the medium. By navigating through clichés and leveraging the unique quirks of each character to overcome trials, the film excels in delivering both humor and tension. "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" thus emerges as a sequel that respects its roots while successfully charting new territory, excelling in entertainment value and thematic depth, making it a standout addition to the Jumanji franchise.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" transcends its source material by offering a fresh take with its body-swapping mechanic and fully utilizing its charismatic cast, propelling it into the realm of sequels that not only succeed their originals but carve out their own identities. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment delivers this adventurous comedy with sparkling Ultra HD video quality, presented in both HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, ensuring a visually stunning experience. Audio quality is not left behind, with an engaging lossless soundtrack highlighted by a well-crafted Dolby Atmos mix that immerses viewers into the jungle's depth. The package's extras, though on the lighter side, offer a fan-friendly collection, including an augmented reality experience via Snapchat, adding a modern twist to the viewing experience.
The ensemble cast, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan brings a whirlwind of fun, further enriched by the 4K UHD Blu-ray's reference-quality Dolby Atmos soundtrack that perfectly complements its gorgeous Dolby Vision presentation. This sequel manages to stand out by delivering an action-packed family adventure that not only pays homage to the original but also thrives on its own merits. Despite its abundance of praise, some may find it lacking the emotional depth of its predecessor, yet it undeniably excels in entertainment value and technical presentation, making it a must-own for 4K UHD supporters.
In conclusion, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" shines as a testament to sequels done right, offering loads of fun supported by an excellent audiovisual presentation on 4K UHD Blu-ray. While it might slightly diverge in emotional impact from the original, it compensates with humor, adventure, and technical brilliance, making it not only recommended but a necessary addition to any 4K collection. Its capacity to engage and entertain confirms its status as a standout sequel deserving of high praise and widespread recommendation.

PlotIn the small town of Brantford, four high school students – shy bookworm Spencer, football jock Fridge, socially awkward Martha, and self-absorbed Bethany – stumble upon an old video game console while serving detention. Curiosity leads them to boot up the game, choosing avatars to play. Unexpectedly, the game transports them into a dangerous and exotic jungle, where they physically transform into their chosen game characters. Spencer becomes a brawny adventurer, Fridge is a diminutive zoologist, Martha turns into a fierce commando, and Bethany is shocked to find herself in the body of a male cartographer.
Within the jungle, they learn that the only way to escape is to complete the game’s quest: to restore a jewel to the eye of a massive jaguar statue and call out "Jumanji." They also discover that each of their avatars comes with unique skills and three lives. The four must navigate a treacherous land filled with peril, including stampedes, deadly traps, and a relentless hunter. Along the way, they must learn to work together, overcome their personal issues, and play to their new strengths to survive the challenges and return to their normal lives.
