Unknown World Blu-ray Release Scheduled for June
Severin Films presents a new 4K restoration of the 1951 sci-fi classic with extensive special features.
Unknown World arrives on Blu-ray this June from Severin Films, offering a newly scanned, uncut 4K restoration sourced from the original protection internegative. The 1951 science fiction film is a Cold War-era variation on subterranean exploration, featuring a team drilling toward Earth's core to find a new ecosystem amid nuclear tensions.
Directed by Terry O. Morse (known for Godzilla: King of the Monsters!) and possibly co-written by blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo, the film stars Victor Kilian (uncredited due to blacklisting), Otto Waldis, and Marilyn Nash. Filmed on location in Carlsbad Caverns, this edition preserves the film’s historical and atmospheric significance.
The 4K release includes an audio commentary by writer Stephen R. Bissette, plus interviews such as "Victor Kilian: A Blacklist Legacy" with Kilian’s grandson Crawford Kilian, “The Unknown World of Terrell O. Morse” with film historian C. Courtney Joyner, and a video essay titled "Special Effects Maestros of the 1950s" by Stephen R. Bissette. The package features the original trailer and optional English SDH subtitles. Presented in a region-free format, the release ensures accessibility for collectors worldwide.
This new edition highlights the contributions of visual effects producers Jack Rabin and Irving Block, noted for work on other landmark sci-fi productions. The 4K restoration brings renewed attention to this forgotten genre entry, reflecting the period’s cultural anxieties through its narrative and visuals.
