Thelonious Monk Straight, No Chaser Blu-ray Releases June 17 from Criterion
Criterion Collection presents a new 4K restoration of the intimate jazz portrait, featuring extensive archival footage and new interviews.
Thelonious Monk Straight, No Chaser arrives on Blu-ray as part of Criterion's June slate, scheduled for release on June 17, 2025. This new edition includes a freshly restored 4K master with an uncompressed monaural soundtrack, preserving the film’s original sound quality.
Directed by Charlotte Zwerin, the film provides a close and personal look at the legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. It draws on rare 1960s archival footage to capture both his intense performances and candid moments offstage. This 4K restoration allows viewers to experience the detail and atmosphere surrounding Monk’s enigmatic artistry.
The release features several supplemental materials that enhance understanding of Monk's life and legacy. Notable additions include an introduction by director Charlotte Zwerin and a new interview with Monk's son, musician T. S. Monk. There is also a new program discussing Zwerin’s filmmaking approach, featuring insights from writer Michael Schulman, assistant editor Bernadine Colish, and Zwerin’s nieces Lisa and Laura Tesone.
A trailer is included alongside English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The package also offers an essay by a music critic to complement the film’s visual and audio presentation.
