The Umbrellas of Cherbourg arrives on 4K Blu-ray through the Criterion Collection on May 6, 2025. This edition features a new 4K restoration undertaken by Ciné-Tamaris and approved by Mathieu Demy, the director's son, ensuring the film’s vivid colors and intricate design are faithfully preserved.
The film stars Catherine Deneuve as the daughter of an umbrella shop owner who experiences first love with a garage mechanic before he is sent off to fight in Algeria. The story is told entirely through Michel Legrand's memorable songs, establishing The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as a distinctive and influential musical.
