Arrow Video releases The Shootist with a 2K restoration and extensive special features this August.
The Shootist (1976), directed by Don Siegel, stars the iconic John Wayne in his final screen role as an aging gunfighter confronting mortality in the fading Old West. This adaptation of Glendon Swarthout's novel presents a story set in 1901 about John Bernard Books, a legendary shooter who faces his last days with defiance amid old enemies and looming death.
The release includes a 2K restoration sourced from the original 35mm camera negative, preserving the film's original audio in lossless mono. There are optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing to accompany the feature.
Additional content provides extensive context and analysis with an audio commentary by filmmaker and critic Howard S. Berger. Film critic David Cairns contributes a visual essay titled The Last Day. Author C. Courtney Joyner discusses the Western genre in A Man-Making Moment. Composer and historian Neil Brand presents Laments of the West, reflecting on Elmer Bernstein's score.
Filmmaker Scout Tafoya offers an essay called Contemplating John Wayne: The Death of a Cowboy. The package also includes archival materials: The Shootist: The Legend Lives On featurette, theatrical trailer, image gallery, reversible sleeve with original and new artwork by Juan Esteban Rodríguez, and an illustrated collector’s booklet featuring film critic Philip Kemp’s writing.
