Shanks tells the tale of Malcolm Shanks, a solitary puppeteer portrayed by Marcel Marceau. Living with his domineering sister and her indulgent husband, he finds solace in his puppets. His fortunes change when he encounters the curious Dr. Baker, who also played by Marceau, making him an assistant. Following the inventor’s untimely demise, Shanks discovers he can animate the dead using electrodes, setting forth a narrative filled with quirky fantasy intersecting horror.
Accompanied by eerie cinematography from Joseph F. Biroc, known for 13 Ghosts, and an atmospheric score by the legendary composer Alex North, the film delivers a unique taste of mid-70s reality imbued with fantasy elements.
