Red Island Blu-ray Drops June 24 from Film Movement
Film Movement releases Robin Campillo’s 2023 drama with new commentary and essay on Blu-ray June 24
Red Island (2023), directed by Robin Campillo, arrives on Blu-ray from Film Movement on June 24. The film stars Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Quim Gutiérrez, Charlie Vauselle, Amely Rakotoarimalala, and Hugues Delamarlière.
Set in the 1970s on one of the last remaining French military bases in Madagascar, the story follows ten-year-old Thomas as he navigates a world marked by colonial tensions and personal discovery. Inspired by his comic book hero Fantomette, Thomas observes the hidden political and sexual dynamics between the colonizers and the colonized around him. As the military base faces relocation, Thomas wrestles with the memories and experiences he must leave behind.
The film blends a sensual exploration of childhood awakening with a sober examination of colonialism, presenting a nuanced portrayal through a child's perspective. This is Campillo's follow-up to his acclaimed film 120 BPM.
The Blu-ray release includes an audio commentary track featuring Robin Campillo and an essay by film critic Sam Cohen. The film is presented in French with English subtitles.
