Negatives Blu-ray Featuring Sparrows Can't Sing from Severin: August 26 Release
Severin Films presents Peter Medak’s debut film and bonus classic Sparrows Can't Sing in new 4K restorations
Negatives marks the feature film directorial debut of Hungarian émigré Peter Medak and offers a provocative exploration of a young couple's experimental relationship dynamics involving a photographer. The 1968 UK drama stars Peter McEnery, Glenda Jackson in her film debut, and Diane Cilento, with Maurice Denham in supporting roles. This release is scanned in 4K from the original camera negative by The British Film Institute, bringing a high level of visual fidelity to the disc.
Alongside Negatives is included the 1963 comedy Sparrows Can’t Sing, directed by Joan Littlewood and assistant directed by Medak. This film stars James Booth and Barbara Windsor and is also scanned in 4K from the original camera negative by StudioCanal, providing a valuable complementary classic to the package.
The set comprises two Blu-rays: Disc 1 features Negatives including an audio interview with Peter Medak by film historian Lee Gambin, audio commentary by Tim Lucas of Video Watchdog, and additional interviews and essays that explore both the film’s themes and production background. Disc 2 offers Sparrows Can’t Sing with audio commentary by filmmaker Daniel Kremer alongside contributions from Medak, multiple interviews including a BFI Q&A with cast members, a locations featurette, and the original trailer.
The presentation runs with English Mono audio, includes closed captions, and supports Region Free playback for Negatives while Sparrows Can’t Sing is Region A. The aspect ratio is preserved at 1.66:1.
This release highlights Severin Films’ commitment to quality restorations and comprehensive special features that bring renewed attention to key works in British cinema history. The set is a limited edition item catering to collectors and cinephiles alike.
