BFI releases Justin Kerrigan's 1999 rave culture film with new 4K restoration and extensive special features
Human Traffic (1999), directed by Justin Kerrigan, arrives on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray from the British Film Institute on July 21, 2025. The release presents a new 4K restoration and Dolby Vision/HDR presentation of this cult film that chronicles a drug-fueled weekend in the British rave scene.
The film stars John Simm, Lorraine Pilkington, Shaun Parkes, Nicola Reynolds, and features Danny Dyer in his first film role. Set around Cardiff’s club culture, it follows five friends escaping daily pressures through partying. The supporting cast includes Jo Brand, Andrew Lincoln, Carl Cox, and Howard Marks as himself.
The soundtrack, curated by Pete Tong, includes music from Armand Van Helden, Orbital, Fatboy Slim, Underworld, Carl Cox, and others. The main theme is “Lyrical Miracle Madness” by Matthew Herbert and Robert Mello. Filmed on location including the legendary Emporium nightclub, the movie uses a dynamic style with direct-to-camera dialogue and fast edits.
Special features on this edition include a new audio commentary by film critic Mark Searby, newly commissioned featurettes such as “Nice One Bruvva” (2025) and “Show Me the Money” (2025), a long-form interview with Danny Dyer from 2023, archival documentary Rave (1997), deleted scenes, pop promo, original and new trailers, along with optional English SDH subtitles. First pressings include an illustrated booklet with new essays by Lou Thomas, Tim Murray, and executive producer Renata S. Aly.
