Heart of Stone Blu-ray Release by Eureka: June 23
Eureka Entertainment presents a stunning restoration of Heart of Stone, a classic East German folktale film, arriving this June.
Eureka Entertainment is thrilled to announce the June release of Heart of Stone (1950) on Blu-ray, presented for the first time in the UK via the Masters of Cinema series. This visually arresting fantasy film, adapted from Wilhelm Hauff's folktale The Cold Heart, was the first East German production to be shot in color. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Lutz Moik, Hanna Rucker, and Erwin Geschonneck, the film weaves a tale of ambition, love, and dark magic as Peter Munk seeks to elevate his social standing with the help of mystical beings.
East Germany's state-owned DEFA film studio created a long-lasting tradition of producing such folktales, with Heart of Stone setting a template for future productions. Its vivid storytelling and unique blend of whimsy and macabre have ensured its place in cinematic history. This edition has been freshly restored in a striking 2K format by the DEFA Foundation, ensuring the film's lush visuals are as captivating as they were at first release.
This Blu-ray release is accompanied by a set of exclusive features designed to enhance your viewing experience and understanding of the film's context within East German cinema. Scholars and experts such as Seán Allan and Mary Going provide valuable insights through audio commentaries and video essays, further complemented by vintage animated shorts.
