Four Mothers Blu-ray Arrives June 16 from British Film Institute
The BFI releases Darren Thornton's 2024 comedy-drama with multiple special features and a new illustrated booklet
Four Mothers (2024), directed by Darren Thornton, is set for Blu-ray release by the British Film Institute on June 16, 2025. The film stars James McArdle, Fionnula Flanagan, Dearbhla Molloy, Stella McCusker, and Niamh Cusack. It premiered in Official Competition at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival, where it received the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.
The story follows Edward (James McArdle), a novelist on the verge of literary success who must balance the pressure of a US book tour with caring for four eccentric mothers left on his doorstep by his friends. The film explores themes of family, self-discovery, and acceptance through a blend of comedy and drama.
This Blu-ray includes a high-definition presentation of the film and a range of special features that provide insight into the production and performances. Included is an audio commentary by director Darren Thornton and writer Colin Thornton, as well as a filmed interview with James McArdle, who discusses his background and work on the film.
Additional content features two short films directed by Darren Thornton: Frankie (2007), which follows a 15-year-old preparing to become a father, and Two Hearts (2011), focusing on a woman coping with past trauma. There is also a five-minute behind-the-scenes featurette showcasing onset clips and interviews with cast and crew, along with the original theatrical trailer.
Optional English SDH subtitles are available for accessibility. The first pressing will include an illustrated booklet containing essays by Simon McCallum and Darren Thornton, contextual writing on the short films by Rachel Pronger, an original review by Nick Davis, and detailed credits.
