Finis Terrae Blu-ray Arrives August 11 with a 4K Restoration
Eureka Entertainment releases Jean Epstein’s 1929 maritime silent drama with new interviews and essays
Finis Terrae, directed by Jean Epstein, stands as a landmark of French Impressionist cinema and arrives on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK and North America via Eureka Entertainment in August. This atmospheric tale follows four fishermen stranded on the Brittany islet of Bannec during a seaweed harvesting expedition, where tensions rise amidst isolation in a story that presages films like The Lighthouse.
The release features a 4K restoration courtesy of Gaumont Film Company, preserving the film’s nuanced visuals, including Epstein’s pioneering use of slow-motion cinematography. Jean Epstein, recognized not only as a filmmaker but also as a critic and theorist, significantly influenced early cinema, with works such as The Fall of the House of Usher and Faithful Heart.
Alongside the presentation, this edition includes multiple supplementary features: new interviews with film historian Pamela Hutchinson exploring Epstein’s legacy; Stranded, a video essay analyzing the film; and an archival appreciation by Joel Daire titled The Bottom of the Wave. Additionally, it comes with a limited edition O-card slipcase showcasing new artwork by John Dunn and a collector’s booklet containing a fresh essay by Epstein expert Christophe Wall-Romana and archival writings from Epstein himself.
Eureka Entertainment continues its dedication to presenting and preserving cinema history.
